Chapter 444 Complete
Yu Lin shook the water off his hands and went to the door. Looking at the mess inside, he said, "Quickly check if anything is missing."
In this situation, Yu Lin couldn't very well go inside.
Although there were signs that the house had been ransacked, Song Lubai knew that nothing of real value was missing.
Although the headboard and footboard of the bed had been searched, she was still worried, so she took the bankbook out of the floor tiles and sewed it into the quilt cover.
She unfolded the quilt again and folded it once more. Seeing no signs of the cotton thread being removed or torn, she knew the bankbook was still there.
As for other valuables, they were placed in the bricks under the bed. When she squatted down next to the cabinet to look over there, she didn't find any signs of being pried open.
The important things weren't lost, but the remaining little over a pound of flour, two or three pounds of rice, and a little over a pound of milk curds she made from the milk she bought were gone, as was the biscuit box containing loose change and tickets.
The box was placed on top of the cabinet. Inside were a dozen or so small coins and some receipts. She and Wei Yang usually got their money from there when they went to the supply and marketing cooperative to buy things.
The thief is really bold.
Song Lubai immediately reported it to the police station.
When Wei Yang returned with his child, the police officers from the local police station were at his doorstep.
After hearing the situation, Wei Yang went around to the back of the house to take a look.
In the past, we lived in mud-brick houses with very small windows that were nailed shut with cross-shaped wooden sticks, making it impossible for anyone to get in through the window.
The brick house had relatively large windows, and in order to keep the room bright, wooden strips were not nailed to the windows, which inadvertently gave thieves an opportunity to enter.
Song Lubai didn't think the police could catch such petty thieves.
After calming herself down, Song Lubai stewed the chicken she had caught, while Wei Yang and Yu Lin repaired the windows behind the house.
Under Song Lubai's arrangement, the two sisters took the money to the supply and marketing cooperative and bought half a jin of loose liquor.
At lunch, Yu Lin and Wei Yang each drank two glasses of wine, while Song Lubai took a sip and almost threw up.
It's so spicy and burning, it doesn't taste good at all. Why do men love drinking this stuff?
"Xiao Song, come to the city to meet us four days from now in the morning. Don't forget."
Yu Lin pedaled the bicycle with one foot and braced himself on the ground with the other, his face flushed an unnatural red.
Song Lubai said, "Why don't you rest in the yard for an hour or two before going back? Will you still be able to ride steadily?"
Yu Lin waved his hand, "I'm perfectly sober. I only had a little bit, it's nothing. I'm leaving now, Wei Yang, let's continue drinking next time."
Yu Lin hummed a little tune and rode away on his bicycle. Song Lubai looked back and saw that Wei Yang's face was dark red.
Song Lubai waved her hand in front of his eyes, "Are you alright?"
Wei Yang shook his head and said, "This liquor is quite strong, but luckily I didn't drink much."
Although I didn't drink much, I hadn't drunk alcohol in a long time, and after suddenly having two glasses, my head is quite dizzy.
Wei Yang went back inside and lay down.
Song Lubai sighed as she looked at the repaired window. Although she hadn't lost anything particularly important, she still felt bad about losing things.
Just when she thought she couldn't find her things again, the police arrested a young man who was dealing in meat rations and found a biscuit box containing Song Lubai's spare change in his home.
When the young man was dropped off at his doorstep, Song Lubai noticed that his shoes were so worn that his toes were sticking out, and said, "If you return what you lost, we won't pursue the matter further."
The young man stubbornly refused to look at Song Lubai and snorted, "You spend a lot of money on a single piece of clothing, how much would it be worth if I stole some grain from your family?"
Song Lubai was too lazy to argue with the child and said to the police, "You can handle it. My things can't just be thrown away for nothing."
The police said, "His family has eaten all the grain, but they still have some milk curds left. It's just him and his mother in the family. This isn't the first time he's done something like stealing chickens and dogs. His mother doesn't care. His family probably can't afford to pay for it."
Now it was Song Lu's turn to stare blankly.
The thief was found, but the stuff was gone for nothing? And the thief even had an attitude of "what can you do to me?"
Just as Song Lubai was trying to figure out how to make the kid realize his mistake, Wei Yang returned.
Upon seeing Wei Yang's tall figure, the boy instinctively straightened up and dared not look around.
Song Lubai was furious at Song Lubai's attitude before and after.
After understanding the situation, Wei Yang said, "Since you can't pay it back, go work in the company. It will be deducted from your monthly salary. You can go back to the regimental headquarters when you've paid it back."
Wei Yang told the police, "Take him home and tell his mother."
My parents won't stop, and I can't keep stealing like this forever.
The young man said, "Why should I do the work?"
Wei Yang walked up to him, bent down slightly, looked down at him, and asked seriously, "Why do you think you can steal other people's things without paying the price? Kid, you can't live your whole life by sneaking around. If you behave well, I'll let you come back early."
Wei Yang was a full two heads taller than him, and the young man subconsciously avoided his gaze, shrinking his shoulders nervously.
Seeing this, Wei Yang relaxed slightly. As long as he still knew fear, he wasn't beyond redemption.
The police were about to leave with the young man when Song Lubai said, "Wait, who told you my clothes are expensive?"
The young man's expression softened considerably, and he said, "That's what everyone says."
Song Lubai knew it was impossible to find that person. After the person left, she pouted and said, "You're quite lenient with him."
Wei Yang said, "He's such a young man, he seems fearless and shameless. If we don't guide him onto the right path, we won't get anything good out of him if we push him too far. We're not afraid of him, but we still have two daughters."
Song Lubai's heart skipped a beat. Yes, she had two daughters, and her daughters were still very young and needed to be protected.
She said seriously, "I'm getting a little cocky."
This cannot continue.
Wei Yang was amused by her expression. "What are you getting cocky about? You didn't bully anyone."
Early the next morning, Wei Yang rode his bicycle to take Song Lubai to the city.
When the two parted, Song Lubai repeatedly told Wei Yang to take good care of the child.
Wei Yang patiently assured her, but seeing that she was about to continue, he asked, "You only care about the child, and don't you care about me at all?"
Song Lubai blurted out, "Of course I miss you. I think about you every moment I'm away from home."
Say it again.
She snorted, "How annoying!"
…
The division headquarters sent a total of seven people to investigate. They arrived in Urumqi and met up with three people from higher up. Together, they took the train to Nanning.
Song Lubai was one of the youngest people on the trip. She didn't talk much throughout the trip, mainly listening, observing and learning, but she was very observant.
The first stop was Nanning, and the second stop was Shanghai.
She certainly learned a lot from listening to the leaders' discussions.
The funds required to start a factory were far more than she had anticipated, and there were many other issues as well. Looking back at the feasibility report she had written, it was nothing more than empty talk.
She feels that she still has a lot to learn.
