Chapter 88 Can't Be Friends

Chapter 88 Can't Be Friends

Wei Yang and the instructor took the person to the hospital and then went to deal with the fugitive.

Song Lubai and Feng Ying took care of Sun Hong and Wang Qun at the hospital.

Wang Qun lost a lot of blood, and the bloody hole on his lower back looked terrifying. Fortunately, the wound was not deep and did not damage his internal organs.

Sun Hong had a few abrasions, the most serious being the wound on her forehead, which had already scabbed over.

There were three beds in the ward, and the third bed was empty, which conveniently provided a place for Song Lubai and Feng Ying to rest.

Sun Hong woke up as dusk fell, and Song Lubai borrowed a teacup from the medical staff and poured her some hot water.

"It's still hot. Let it cool down before you drink it."

Sun Hong was pale and kept complaining of a headache. When Song Lubai saw her about to touch her head, she quickly stopped her, saying, "Don't touch it, don't touch it. The doctor said you might have a concussion. Is your head buzzing and you feel very uneasy?"

Sun Hong nodded with red eyes, feeling uncomfortable. "My ears are ringing, I have a headache, I feel uncomfortable all over, and my vision is blurry. I feel so awful."

Feng Ying comforted her, "This is all normal. The doctor said your head was hit by an external force, and these are all symptoms of concussion. You will probably recover in a few days, so don't worry."

Sun Hong moved her hands: "Where's Wang Qun? How is Wang Qun? She was pushed down while trying to save me, and it looks like she was stabbed."

Song Lubai pointed to the bed next to her: "Lie right next to you. Don't worry about so much right now. Those five fugitives have already been caught."

Sun Hong nodded silently.

She didn't know if she had been...

She asked hesitantly, "Who found me first? Are my clothes... are they still neat?"

Song Lubai hesitated, then lowered her voice and said, "I'm the one who packed your clothes."

Sun Hong looked at Song Lubai and began to cry.

Song Lubai was at a loss: "Don't cry, it will worsen your concussion symptoms."

Her words of comfort had no effect until the nurse came in to change the dressing.

Sun Hong gripped the nurse's hand tightly, unable to utter a complete sentence, "I...I..."

The nurse, who was married, learned of Sun Hong's concerns after asking a few questions and said directly, "We've checked you, you're fine, you're healthy, there are no other problems, don't worry."

Sun Hong's crying then subsided.

The ward quieted down, and after a short while, the door was pushed open, and Wei Yang and the instructor came in together.

The instructor was carrying four large naan breads, while Wei Yang had two lunchboxes and several pairs of chopsticks.

“Our 25th Company is dirt poor, we don’t have any money or coupons. I could only buy you some naan and bring it over. Song Lubai, you and Feng Ying, please make do with the naan for the next few days.”

"As for Sun Hong and Wang Qun, they are injured. Once they wake up, they can eat in the canteen, especially soupy dishes that are easy to digest. Don't worry about the medical and food expenses; we can reimburse them. The most important thing is for them to recover."

The naan bread, with its two large faces, was decorated with many sesame seeds and looked quite tempting.

Anyway, I don't have to do any work while staying at the hospital, so I can eat naan every day.

Wei Yang placed the lunchbox on the table: "This is leftover soup from our cafeteria tonight. Please make do with it."

Feng Ying thought to herself: If Song Lubai weren't here, she probably wouldn't even have a sip of this soup. This Comrade Wei is clearly up to no good.

The instructor chuckled, "Comrade Wei is just being kind. The food in your canteen is really good; they even put an egg in the soup. I haven't had an egg in a month or so."

"Alright, alright, it's not convenient for you women to stay here. We have things to do back home, so we'll be leaving now."

The food at Wei Yang's unit's canteen was indeed quite good. The vegetable soup not only contained eggs but also tofu cut into small pieces. The tomato soup base was topped with bright green vegetables and had a sesame oil aroma. It was much thicker than the communal pot meals and soups at the camp.

The naan bread and biscuits are perfect to eat with the soup.

Wang Qun finally woke up the next morning.

Her wound was on her lower back, and she felt very uncomfortable after sleeping face down all night.

After Wang Qun turned over, he was face to face with Sun Hong, who had her eyes open.

Wang Qun, grimacing in pain from his wound, felt somewhat embarrassed when he saw Sun Hong again.

"Well, I have to apologize to you. I was wrong before, and I almost caused you to lose your life."

Sun Hong felt a little awkward. "You saved me yesterday, so we're even."

Wang Qun nodded, "Alright then, from now on we'll consider ourselves to have no more holidays."

Sun Hong turned her back, feeling extremely uncomfortable.

She didn't know what else to say to Wang Qun.

Even if they make peace now, she doesn't want to have anything to do with her anymore in the future.

She could neither face her true, flawed self, nor could she face how others perceived her as flawed.

Even if they shake hands and make peace now, they can't be friends.

When Song Lubai and Feng Ying entered, they felt that the atmosphere in the ward was strange.

Wang Qun felt suffocated by the atmosphere in the ward. She complained, "Where did you all go? I'm so hungry and in so much pain, waaaah..."

Feng Ying reassured her, "Okay, okay, I'll prepare rice porridge for you right away."

As Song Lubai helped Sun Hong get out of bed to go to the toilet, Sun Hong whispered, "Song Lubai, I'm sorry, this is the last time I'll apologize to you."

Song Lubai was a little confused: "What did you do to wrong me?"

Sun Hong said in a flat tone, "I kept the mutton fat soap and headscarf that Wang Zhendong gave you before."

“I know you’ll find me ridiculous for doing something so easily exposed, but you don’t know… well, I am that kind of person, but I will never steal again or take advantage of anyone again.”

She had eight siblings and was fostered in the countryside from a young age. She never had enough to eat and never wore a new piece of clothing.

She was given away by her biological parents when she was eight years old. Her adoptive parents were both city dwellers and had no children in their thirties. However, in the five years after they raised her, they had three children in a row.

Her adopted daughter is once again being ignored.

She had to take good care of her younger siblings, do all the housework, and keep her adoptive parents happy.

She never dared to take more than her share, and her adoptive parents would never buy her anything. She lived cautiously and humbly in that home.

She had never even owned a very cheap hair clip, yet she desperately wanted one.

On her first long trip, she stole things and money on the train and was mortified when she was caught.

When Wang Zhendong delivered the items, she was tempted again.

Wang Qun is right; stealing is a sign of spinelessness.

A person must have backbone.

She whispered her promise: "It will never happen again."

Song Lubai never expected her to do something like this.

To be honest, her feelings towards Sun Hong had worsened at this point.

Sun Hong clearly said she wouldn't steal again when she apologized last time. Although this time it wasn't stealing, the nature of the act is not much different.

Oh well, why bother with all that? They don't even know where they'll be assigned in a few months anyway, so there's no need to get distracted by people and things that might lead to separation or not being able to be friends.

At this moment, Song Lubai had no idea that when the flood came, it was Sun Hong, whom she thought she was destined not to be friends with, who helped her and prevented her from being swept away by the flood.
