Chapter 84 Argument and Standoff
Song Lubai was a person who cherished her life very much. She was not very brave. The boldest thing she ever did was to go to the countryside to find Li Guangming because of a dream. That day, she walked from noon until dark, and there were few people on the road.
After finishing the steamed buns, looking at the barren Gobi Desert in front of her, Wei Yang's words of warning still echoed in her ears, and Song Lubai made up her mind to be more careful in the future.
"Comrade Song, you..."
Was the reason for leaving his hometown to support the border regions because of Li Guangming's affair?
Wei Yang's words were left unsaid.
Because he realized that his relationship with Song Lubai was not yet at the point where he could talk about those things.
Song Lubai asked curiously, "What's wrong? *hiccup*"
After eating three steamed buns, she let out a satisfied burp.
Just as he was about to speak again, he hiccuped again.
Song Lubai simply shut up and pointed in the direction of the camp to indicate that she should go back.
It's almost time to start work; the company commander will be blowing his whistle soon.
Wei Yang nodded and followed her back to the camp, where they sat down on the ground under the cooking shed.
The air was scorching hot; just sitting here without moving made you break out in a sweat.
Before the whistle signaling the start of work in the afternoon even sounded, the sound of girls arguing came from a dugout.
"Who else could it be but you? I remember that day at the bazaar you only bought a bar of mutton fat soap, you didn't buy a headscarf at all, so where did this headscarf come from?"
"Stop talking nonsense. This was a gift from someone else. If I had stolen it, would I dare to use it?"
"You're talking nonsense. If someone really gave it to you, why didn't you take it out and use it a few days ago? Weren't you afraid I would find out right away? You think you can get away with hiding it for a couple more days?"
"Whoever stole your things is a dog. I told you it wasn't me."
"Not you? You weren't the one who stole things and Huifang's money on the train?"
Another emotionally charged voice abruptly stopped.
The commotion from under the dugout reached Wei Yang's ears clearly.
He simply got up and went elsewhere.
This is a dispute involving women; it is not gentlemanly to continue listening to it.
A short while later, the company commander came up from the dugout right on time and whistled.
The sleepy-eyed crowd filed out of the dugout.
The two girls who were arguing hadn't calmed down yet.
"You keep saying it was a gift from someone else, so tell me who it was. Let's go find someone and confront them. Do you dare?"
Wang Qun grabbed Sun Hong and spoke loudly, attracting the attention of everyone who was not yet fully awake.
The company commander roared, "Get to work now, stop making a fuss, we'll talk about it when you get back."
Wang Qun could only lower his voice and forcefully drag Sun Hong to find someone to confront.
Having no other choice, Sun Hong could only lead Wang Qun to Wang Zhendong at the back of the group.
The three of them walked at the back of the line, attracting frequent glances from those in the line ahead.
The company commander, who was talking to Wei Yang at the camp entrance, yelled, "What are you all looking at? Get back to work!"
Everyone then quickened their pace.
Holding the scarf in his hand, Wang Qun lowered his voice and asked Wang Zhendong, "Did you give Sun Hong a headscarf?"
Wang Zhendong was bewildered when he was stopped. Upon hearing this, he first nodded, then shook his head.
Wang Qun said impatiently, "Did you send it or not? If you sent it, you sent it; if you didn't, you didn't. What do you mean by that?"
Suppressing his embarrassment, Wang Zhendong quickly said, "I asked her to deliver these to other girls. Besides the headscarf, she also gave me some lanolin soap. I happened to run into her that day, so I asked her to deliver them for me. The next day she said the items had been delivered."
Wang Qun, determined to get to the bottom of things, asked, "Who? Who did you tell her to give it to?"
Under interrogation, Wang Zhendong had no choice but to confess honestly, his voice barely audible: "Song Lubai."
Wang Qun asked several times before he could hear clearly.
After hearing this clearly, she said excitedly, "She's talking nonsense. Song Lubai bought two of them herself, one of which is exactly the same as this one. We bought them together at the bazaar that day."
Wang Zhendong looked at Sun Hong in disbelief, "You're lying to me?"
Exposed, Sun Hong blushed deeply but couldn't utter a word of defense.
Her palms were sweaty, and she couldn't lift her head guiltily. She stammered, "You said it yourself, if she doesn't want it, she can give it to other girls who need it, so I'm not lying to you."
Wang Qun sneered, "You're really something, aren't you? Is that all you're lacking? Aren't you ashamed to do something like this?"
Extremely embarrassed, Sun Hong shoved Wang Qun hard, saying, "I already said I didn't steal anything from you. Who knows who stole your headscarf!"
Sun Hong ran away, filled with shame and indignation. Wang Qun shouted after her, "You've stolen things before, I suspect you have some kind of problem?"
After speaking of Sun Hong, Wang Qun looked at Wang Zhendong beside him and said, "I've never seen someone send something by having someone else deliver it."
Wang Zhendong disagreed, saying, "You went a bit too far just now. We're all from the same hometown and will be living together for a long time to come. You shouldn't have made such a racket that so many people could hear you. How will she face people after that?"
Wang Qun blushed, then straightened his back, convinced he had done nothing wrong.
“If it weren’t for her criminal record, I certainly wouldn’t have suspected or accused her.”
Wang Zhendong: "You shouldn't have done that!"
Wang Qun: "You think it's right to ask someone like that to deliver things? Even if you're asking someone to deliver things to Song Lubai, you should ask Feng Ying, who's closest to her, or I, or at least another girl who lives in the same dugout as Song Lubai. You shouldn't ask her. Look at her. Even if we're poor, we're poor with dignity. Look at her, where's the honesty in her character? Are you out of your mind?"
Wang Zhendong, who was told he had a problem with his brain, was speechless for a moment.
He was so nervous when he delivered the things to Song Lubai that he didn't dare to call her out alone. If he hadn't run into Sun Hong that day, he would have turned around and gone back.
Wang Qun had no idea what he was thinking.
After a while, Wang Zhendong said, "Alright, alright, hurry up and go to work. Don't spread this around. Just pretend I never gave you anything. Don't tell Song Lubai either, and don't criticize Sun Hong anymore."
Although what Sun Hong did was dishonorable, if you put yourself in Sun Hong's shoes, you'll feel embarrassed for her.
It's just a headscarf and a few bars of lanolin soap, why bother?
Thinking back to that day, he foolishly asked Song Lubai if she liked the headscarf. Now, looking back, does Song Lubai think he's out of his mind?
Wang Zhendong patted his head in regret.
Wang Qun sneered, "You think you're a good person, and I'm a heinous villain?"
She just hated Sun Hong's petty and narrow-minded attitude.
After learning that Sun Hong was the thief who stole things and money from the bus, Wang Qun began to dislike her.
People who are dishonest lack integrity.
Wang Qun was still angry, but she also planned to listen to Wang Zhendong and not continue to cause trouble for Sun Hong, so she would just let the matter pass.
But she was still very angry. Which thief stole her things while she was drying her headscarf?
Wang Qun made a big fuss earlier, but most people didn't see the whole story and didn't know what exactly happened. They all thought that Wang Qun said Sun Hong stole her things, while Sun Hong said that the things were given to her by Wang Zhendong.
In the afternoon, while everyone was working, they were all whispering that Wang Zhendong had feelings for Sun Hong. Most people's focus was not on the lost or stolen items, but on Wang Zhendong's feelings for Sun Hong.
