He Yi made a very soft nasal sound: "Okay."
The luxury car drove towards Shumo Street, where the He family lived. Cheng Yi wanted to say something to open He Yi's heart, but she didn't know where to start.
He stared blankly out the window, his profile revealing a melancholy that resembled the shadows in a sketch, veiled in leaden gray, conveying loneliness and desolation.
As soon as the car stopped at the entrance of the residential area and the two got out, they heard a voice behind them:
Fifth Brother.
He Yi's heart skipped a beat, and he immediately turned around.
Then, he was completely at a loss.
He saw He Jing and He Chen get out of the taxi, with He Chen holding an umbrella for He Jing, looking extremely considerate.
He Yi pursed his lips and nodded: "You're back too."
Cheng Yi's beautiful eyes curved into a smile as she called out, "Sixth Brother."
He Chen smiled and said, "Xiao Yi is here. Would you like to come up and sit down?"
Only He Jing remained silent, staring intently at He Yi with a furrowed brow, as if she were organizing her thoughts.
Cheng Yi glanced at He Jing with a deliberately ambiguous look and said, "No, I'm just dropping Fifth Brother off on my way. I'll be leaving now. Please give my regards to Mom."
He Chen turned to He Yi instead, a slight smile curving his lips: "It's a bit of a coincidence."
Before He Yi could even understand what he meant, He Chen handed the umbrella in his hand to He Jing, opened another umbrella, and walked towards him: "If I had known that Fifth Brother would have Xiao Yi to pick me up, He Jing and I wouldn't have gone out."
He Yi's mind went blank for a moment, his eyes widened, and he looked at He Jing in disbelief, his entire face changing color.
Did she go to pick him up?
Why didn't I see it?
If she really braved the heavy rain to pick him up, only to see him get into Cheng Yi's car, wouldn't that be...
He turned to look at He Chen, gritting his teeth slightly: "He Chen, you did this on purpose."
He could have stopped He Jing, but he chose not to.
He must have expected Cheng Yi to come and pick him up.
He Chen didn't deny it, raising an eyebrow and smiling slightly: "Anyway, Fifth Brother doesn't trust Sister He Jing, does he? No, I should say... Fifth Brother never wanted to be friends with Sister He Jing in the first place, so even if Sister He Jing makes a wasted trip, it doesn't matter, right?"
He took a step forward, leaned closer, and deliberately whispered something in his ear, emphasizing the last two words: "Right?"
He Yi clenched his fist.
He stared intently at He Jing, but a deep sense of powerlessness welled up inside him. A strong sense of shame and self-abandonment rose up, and he didn't even have the courage to go up to He Jing and explain.
Suddenly, He Jing asked, "Sixth Brother, what were you saying to Fifth Brother?"
From her and Cheng Yi's perspective, He Yi and He Chen simply handed each other an umbrella; the whole process took less than a minute. But He Jing had a gut feeling that He Chen was up to something, so she said gently to He Yi, "Fifth Brother, it's raining so hard, don't just stand there like an idiot, let's go upstairs."
Then, she looked at Cheng Yi and said, "Thank you for bringing Fifth Brother back."
He showed not the slightest displeasure.
She simply picked up someone or missed someone, nothing more; there was really no need for her to be upset.
Cheng Yi felt that He Jing was putting on a brave face, and deliberately instructed, "Take good care of Fifth Brother. He waited at the station for so long in just a thin shirt. Make him a bowl of ginger soup to prevent him from catching a cold."
"OK".
He Jing answered readily.
He Yi stood still, not moving an inch.
He didn't want to go back; he wanted to be alone for a while. He hadn't figured out how to face He Jing yet.
He Jing stared at He Yi with a puzzled look for a moment, then stepped forward and took his hand.
