Cheng Muyun pursed his lips and gently took Xu Zhuohua's fingers. "Okay, I won't mention it anymore. Don't be angry, Young Marshal's wife."
Xu Zhuohua reached out and took Cheng Muyun's arm, a smile playing on her lips. "This young marshal's wife isn't angry. May I ask how the young marshal knew I was here?"
Cheng Muyun picked up the things on the ground, and the two of them walked into the inn together.
“Your second brother gave me your route map. Zhang Qi also sent me a telegram yesterday. I missed you so much that I came here immediately.”
The two held hands, and to outsiders, they looked like an ordinary, loving couple.
Xu Zhuohua gently rested her head on Cheng Muyun's shoulder. The jasmine scent in her hair mixed with the faint medicinal smell on his body, which warmed her heart.
She suddenly remembered something, looked up and asked softly, "But it takes two days to get from Xinhai City to Nanhu, even by water. How did you manage to get here?"
Cheng Muyun lowered his eyes, a gentle smile hidden in them.
"It's just a matter of traveling day and night." His voice was clear and cold, his fingertips unconsciously stroking the thin calluses on the back of her hand. "It's spring now, the waterways are open, and we'll be on a smooth journey."
His words were light and easy, as if the two days and two nights of travel were nothing more than a leisurely stroll.
Xu Zhuohua frowned, "Traveling day and night, are your injuries alright?"
Cheng Muyun looked down at her reddened eyes and suddenly smiled.
He gently stroked the tip of Xu Zhuohua's pert nose with his finger, causing her to lean back slightly. "Where is the injury more important than you?" Before he finished speaking, he had already leaned down and placed a kiss on her soft cheek.
The inn was full of people, mostly Xu Zhuohua's men, who were all secretly glancing over.
Xu Zhuohua's face flushed red instantly, and she pushed Cheng Muyun away, "Hey, what are you doing? There are so many people watching."
Her voice trembled, and she avoided the curious glances from all around her, forgetting that her flushed cheeks were more obvious than any explanation could.
Cheng Muyun seemed to be teasing her on purpose, his slender fingers steadily supporting her burning cheeks, and before she could resist, he planted a long kiss on her other cheek.
His warm breath brushed against her flushed earlobe, a seductive smile playing on his lips: "So what? Didn't you tell them you're my wife?"
These words were like a wildfire, burning Xu Zhuohua until she could no longer withstand them.
She grabbed Cheng Muyun's sleeve and turned to run upstairs, followed by Xinghua's clear voice calling, "Miss, aren't you going to eat?"
Without turning her head, she tossed out the words, "I'm not eating!"
The moment the carved wooden door slammed shut, Xu Zhuohua suddenly stood on tiptoe and wrapped her arms tightly around Cheng Muyun's neck.
She met his loving gaze and pressed her burning lips against his.
Cheng Muyun was taken aback at first, then took the initiative and hugged her tightly. The twilight outside the window quietly spread through the window frame, turning the two entangled figures into gentle silhouettes.
A kiss as swift and fierce as a storm, prying open teeth, Cheng Muyun's uniquely cold breath filling lungs.
Xu Zhuohua's fingers deftly unbuttoned Cheng Muyun's clothes.
Cheng Muyun's coat was carelessly tossed on the ground, along with his cashmere sweater, vest, and shirt...
Damn it, why is Cheng Muyun dressed so thickly?
Finally unbuttoning his shirt, Xu Zhuohua abruptly lifted it open, his fingers resting on his firm chest.
What was within reach was rough gauze.
Xu Zhuohua froze, and their lips slowly parted.
Her eyes, filled with affection, stared at the layers of gauze covering Cheng Muyun's body.
Xu Zhuohua's trembling fingertips hovered on Cheng Muyun's shoulder, hesitant to drop them.
Layers of gauze wrapped his body, winding from his angular shoulders to his lean waist, like a winding snow line covering a battlefield where the smoke of battle has not yet cleared.
The bandage was soaked with blood in one place, and the bright red stain was slowly spreading along the lines, a shocking sight.
His drooping arm was covered with crisscrossing medical tape, tightly wrapped around his rough skin.
At this moment, Cheng Muyun resembled a mummy bound by bandages, but every inch of skin beneath the bandages concealed shocking scars.
Xu Zhuohua's gaze swept over the blood-soaked gauze, and a metallic, metallic taste suddenly rose in her throat. Tears welled up in her eyes without warning.
She opened her mouth, wanting to ask, "Does it hurt?", but found that her throat felt like it was stuffed with a wad of cotton soaked in salt water. The aching pain turned all her words into broken sobs.
Trembling fingers gently traced his bleeding wound, nails digging deep into her palms, as if she wished she could take all the pain upon herself.
"Cheng Muyun, does it hurt?"
A large tear rolled down Xu Zhuohua's cheek and landed on the wooden floor.
Snap—
Cheng Muyun gently wiped away Xu Zhuohua's tears with his fingertips; the skin his fingertips touched was cool and damp.
"What's wrong?" His voice was soothing and gentle as he brushed his fingertips against her trembling eyelids. "My injuries are almost healed."
Xu Zhuohua's tears flowed even more fiercely, like beads from a broken string hitting his bandaged chest, spreading dark water stains.
She wept silently with her eyelashes drooping, her shoulders trembling slightly, her heart aching as if crushed by a boulder.
The powerful forces behind Zhou Minhai were like a dark cloud hanging over him.
What kind of power could make Cheng Yuguang so wary that he even had to seriously injure his own son?
Xu Zhuohua clenched her fists, her nails digging deep into her palms, but the stinging pain from her fingertips was nothing compared to the overwhelming feeling of powerlessness in her chest.
She knew her own limitations. Even if she used all the connections in the Xu family, it would be like a mantis trying to stop a chariot in the face of such power; she couldn't even protect him.
