Xu Zhuohua pursed her lips, trying to make her voice sound calm.
"Given the current situation, it's very likely that things will develop to that point, and I can't offer him any help. What I'm worried about is, if Cheng Muyun is hunted down by a lot of people, could you help him?"
Xu Zhuohua bit her lip and looked at Chen Hede, hoping he would agree.
She continued, "You don't need to protect him all the time. Just get him out of Xinhai City. I found an excellent hiding place while I was inspecting the southern route of the east. You can take him there. There are doctors who can meet him."
Chen Hede looked down at Xu Zhuohua's clenched fingers, which had turned white, and a bitter feeling rose in his throat.
As a police officer with many years of experience in criminal investigation, he was all too familiar with that desperate look in his eyes—like those witnesses who had nowhere else to turn, their eyes burning with an almost desperate resolve when handing over crucial evidence.
However, he did not state it directly, but instead tried to extract more information.
"Where?"
“There’s an abandoned station near Nanhu Lake. There’s a doctor guarding it. It’s very remote and no goods pass through there. I’ve already erased that station from the route map. No one can find it.”
Chen Hede became even more convinced of his guess.
If it were a secret location, it certainly couldn't be known by more people. The fact that Xu Zhuohua dared to tell him meant that Xu Zhuohua was prepared not to send Cheng Muyun there.
He comforted him, "It's not that serious. Cheng Muyun can handle it on his own. It won't come to the point where everyone abandons him. Aren't you overthinking it?"
Suddenly, from deep within the lotus leaves came the sound of fish leaping out of the water, splashing and shattering the setting sun over the pond.
She bit her lower lip hard, the blood seeping from between her teeth mingling with her trembling breaths, leaving a glaring red mark on her pale lips.
The hand holding the water glass trembled uncontrollably, and water droplets condensed on the glass wall slid down between the fingers, leaving dark stains on the stone table.
Chen Hede swiftly caught the tipping cup, the celadon porcelain striking the stone surface with a soft sound, startling the koi carp in the pond into scattering in all directions.
He stared at Xu Zhuohua's fingertips curled up in her sleeve, the unnatural bluish-white color stinging his eyes. "Zhuohua? Do you know something?"
Xu Zhuohua suddenly looked up, the fear surging in her eyes almost swallowing her whole.
“Chen Hede,” her voice seemed to be squeezed from the deepest part of her chest, hoarse as if she were dying, “among the people I know, only you have the ability to save Cheng Muyun.”
Trembling fingertips gripped the other person's sleeve tightly, as if grasping at the last straw. "As long as you get him out of Xinhai City, the Xu family will take care of him."
