Luo Yunqiao's snow-white pearl earrings trembled and swayed, and the originally delicate rouge smudged into an eerie red on her deathly pale face.
She stared intently at the bulging quilt in Cheng Muyun's arms, her nails digging deep into her palms, and suddenly stumbled in, her high heels clicking as she rushed in.
“You have to come with me tonight no matter what!” Her scarlet lips trembled violently. “Otherwise, I’ll have my father—”
Bang! —
The moment the gunshot tore through the air, Xu Zhuohua was suddenly pulled into Cheng Muyun's arms, his burning hands tightly covering her ears.
The celadon vase on the table shattered with a crash, and the bluish-white porcelain shards, like ice blades, grazed Luo Yunqiao's ankles and flew everywhere. Her carefully curled skirt instantly burst open with tiny cracks.
A piercing scream caught in his throat. Luo Yunqiao slumped down amidst the shattered porcelain on the floor, staring at Cheng Muyun's reloaded gun, finally seeing the murderous intent surging in his eyes.
"Try saying it again?" Cheng Muyun's voice was as cold as a poisoned blade, and the way his thumb rubbed the trigger made everyone hold their breath.
The charade that Chairman Luo forced her to act out, the jewelry she had to give away against her will, all turned into the smoke rising from the muzzle of a gun.
He lowered his head and kissed the top of Xu Zhuohua's head, but then raised the gun barrel half an inch higher. "Get out, and don't make me say it a second time."
Luo Yunqiao's back pressed against the carved door frame, his fingernails digging deep into the sandalwood grain.
Tears streamed down his pale face, and smudged mascara seeped into his eyes, making him look like a stubborn, trapped beast.
The servants behind her tugged at her sleeves, tearing her silk gloves out of shape, but she remained stiff and unmoving, a broken sob escaping her throat: "Mu Yun, you have to give me an explanation today!"
Footsteps in the corridor approached like a torrential downpour, and Cheng Yuguang's roar shook the walls, causing dust to fall: "What was that gunshot?"
With a bang, the room was instantly plunged into darkness.
The dazzling chandelier crashed to the ground, the sharp sound of shattering glass drowning out Luo Yunqiao's scream.
Darkness washed over the room like a tide. Cheng Muyun's hot breath brushed against Xu Zhuohua's ear, and his whisper, tinged with the smell of gunpowder, carried an undeniable pressure: "Close your eyes."
