Chapter 174 Xu Family Sets Rules

A flash of anger crossed Xu's eyes. She hadn't expected that Shen Danru, a junior, would dare to talk back to her like that.

Yes, she had been in charge of the Duke's mansion for so long that she had almost forgotten and thought she was the Duchess.

But so what?

Only she can keep this Duke's mansion afloat; even without her, there is her daughter-in-law, Madam Ke.

Even if his elder brother returned, he would never hand over this vast Duke's mansion to that country woman, Zhou.

Does she deserve it?

Immediately, the smile she had put on when she came out vanished, replaced by her usual haughty demeanor, and she sneered:

"I underestimated you, you little brat. You're so young, yet you're so sharp-tongued and dare to disobey your elders."

"Granny Fan, slap her. Teach her some manners of the Duke's mansion."

Granny Fan, who had been standing to the side impatiently, smiled sinisterly when she heard her mistress give the order, and twisted her wrists with a contorted expression.

She slightly raised her wrist; if that slap landed, Shen Danru's face would surely be ruined.

Qingtan was about to draw her sword, but Shen Danru stopped her.

Shen Danru laughed and said, "Have you thought this through? I am the Princess of Chaoyun County. Are you sure you want this old man to beat me?"

Madam Xu was taken aback. How could she have forgotten this? Shen Danru was now the second-rank Princess of Chaoyun, bestowed by the Emperor.

She was so angry she gritted her teeth, but she was helpless against Shen Danru.

She glared at Zhou Shi: "Is this the good daughter you raised? She has no manners whatsoever. Don't bring your vulgar and uncouth ways from the countryside into the mansion, or you'll be ridiculed by the powerful and wealthy in Shengjing."

"If you don't know how to teach them, you might as well entrust these two children to your younger brother and sister-in-law, Ms. Ke. She will teach them well and make them as knowledgeable and reasonable as Yingxue."

When Zhou saw Xu staring at her, she shrank back in fright.

Thinking back to her arrival, Ru'er had already clashed with the elders of the Duke's mansion. She blamed Shen Danru for being too impulsive and even implicating Yulan.

Poor Yulan is pregnant, what should we do?

Thinking of this, she said to Shen Danru, "Ru'er, you've gone too far. How can you talk to your elders like that? She's your second grandmother. Why don't you kowtow and apologize?"

Shen Danru glanced at Zhou Shi, a hint of disappointment flashing in her eyes.

"How could I dare to be presumptuous in front of Madam Xu? But there are some things that always need to be clarified. Don't you agree, Madam?"

Shen Danru retorted.

“You only say that I disrespect my elders, but if we go by the order, Shen Yingxue is probably ranked after my eldest sister Shen Yulan, right? Your good granddaughter, did she respect her eldest sister? She insulted people first, and her eldest sister taught her a lesson afterward, which is perfectly reasonable.”

A hint of mockery flashed in Shen Danru's eyes:

"Does this mean that the old lady's rules are only for restraining others, and your own granddaughter can disregard them? In that case, I'll have to ask my grandfather for his opinion."

"I need to ask him why the Duke's mansion is bullying people like this. If that's the case, then we might as well not go back."

Xu was rendered speechless by Shen Danru's questioning. She was secretly annoyed, but she couldn't show it.

The women's carriages were positioned at the back, and the men did not notice the commotion.

If she made too much noise and her older brother found out, she really wouldn't be able to explain herself.

Xu had actually arrived long ago and was standing next to a carriage.

The younger generation didn't see her because her figure was blocked by the carriage.

She did initially hear that Yingxue had insulted her first, and then Shen Yulan reprimanded her.

If this gets out, Yingxue will be in the wrong.

Seeing that her granddaughter had been wronged, she and Madam Ke could no longer stand still and came out.

At this moment, Madam Zhou couldn't help but speak again. She said softly, "Ru'er, please stop talking."

Shen Danru gave a slight smirk, glanced at Madam Zhou, and said, "What? Madam Zhou, did I say something wrong?"

Mrs. Zhou choked for a moment, looking at her daughter in disbelief.

What does "Ru'er" mean? Does she not even call her "mother" anymore?

"Big sister, let's go."

Fearing that Shen Yulan might make another mistake, Shen Danru supported her as they walked towards the gate.

Disappointed, Shen Yulan turned to look at Zhou Shi and followed her second sister forward.

She looked worried.

Shen Danru patted her hand to comfort her, saying, "Big sister, this day will come sooner or later. I'll take care of everything, don't worry."

Shen Yulan's expression finally eased somewhat.

Xu stood there, her face ashen, and glared at Zhou. Zhou lowered her head, not daring to breathe.

Knowing that she had Shen Xiaohua by her side made me feel much better.

Neither of her two daughters cares about her mother at all; Xiao Hua is much more considerate of her.

It was a complete waste of money raising them.

Madam Xu was secretly furious that a junior dared to contradict her to her face. This had never happened before, so how could she swallow this insult?

No, she had to find a way to expel Shen Danru from the Duke's mansion.

She glanced at her daughter-in-law, Ms. Ke, and noticed that Ms. Ke seemed to have something to say to her, so she gestured for Ms. Ke to speak.

Ke leaned close to her mother-in-law's ear and whispered something, and Xu finally smiled.

When Shen Danru and her companions arrived at the gate of the Duke's Mansion, the descendants of Shen Tuo's lineage stood in front of the gate to greet them.

Upon seeing Shen Danru and Shen Yulan, Shen Chuyan immediately came to greet them.

She bowed slightly and said, "Greetings, sisters. I am Chu Yan. Welcome back home, sisters."

Shen Chuyan is the son of Shen Tuo, born to Shen Chao's concubine, and is two months younger than Shen Yingxue.

Shen Chuyan's manners were impeccable and her words humble; even Shen Danru could not find any fault with her.
