Shen Danru pointed to Shen Yu'an's face.
There were still faint red marks on her face, but they weren't noticeable unless you looked closely.
Who is Shen Danru? She was taught by a palace maid from a young age and is very observant of people and things.
She saw it as soon as Shen Yu'an returned.
The eldest brother got beaten up.
At first, I thought I had gotten into a fight with someone, but after my father told me what had happened, I realized it was my fiancée.
This immediately changed Shen Danru's impression of her.
Shen Yu'an felt a little embarrassed.
It seems that nothing can escape the eyes of the second sister.
He, as the eldest brother, had absolutely nothing to hide in front of his younger sister.
"Second sister, I..."
He wanted to explain for Chai Tinglian, but for a moment he didn't know where to begin.
“Brother, there’s no need to say anything more. I have ten taels of silver here, so I’ll give it all to you. I’ll tell Mother later that once we’ve saved up enough money at home, we’ll make a hundred taels and buy my sister-in-law a gold hairpin.”
She touched the hair accessory on her head and said, "This is mine now, I really like it."
Shen Yu'an felt a warmth in his heart and smiled as he patted her head.
Shen Danru looked at her love-struck older brother and subtly told him that someone who truly cares about him won't care what gifts he gives.
Anything he buys, no matter what it is, he'll like.
I wonder if her older brother understands her feelings as a younger sister.
"Second sister, I can't take your money. You've helped the family enough."
As Shen Yu'an spoke, he stuffed the silver into Shen Danru's hand.
Shen Danru hesitated and didn't take the money: "Brother, you should take this money first. Our family is getting better and better now. We can save up a hundred taels of silver in just a few days. You haven't given your wife a decent gift yet, have you?"
Shen Yu'an hesitated.
To be honest, he felt somewhat sorry for Tinglian.
The two got engaged, and she didn't ask for anything, showing great consideration for him. He should cherish her in return.
But then he remembered that all the money in the family came from his second sister's earnings, and he hadn't bought her a decent gift or anything for their mother. How could he possibly accept that?
Shen Danru seemed to see through his thoughts and advised:
"Brother, we're all family, so don't be so polite. My mother and I will have it in the future."
Shen Yu'an held the ten-tael silver note in his hand, and had to admit, it was a bit too hot to handle.
Since it was his second sister's kind gesture, he would accept it for now and repay her by working harder in the future.
Thinking about this, Shen Yu'an worked even harder.
Time flies, and a week has passed in the blink of an eye. The Shen family has finally saved up one hundred taels.
After delivering the goods, Shen Yu'an went directly to the largest jewelry store in town. He immediately took a liking to a curved butterfly hairpin. The butterfly on the hairpin was lifelike and very playful, making it very suitable for a young woman to wear.
"Shopkeeper, how much is this?"
The shopkeeper was a woman surnamed Yu. She glanced at Shen Yu'an, who was dressed in the lowest quality coarse cloth. He looked like a country bumpkin. How could he afford a gold hairpin?
Even so, she patiently said, "This gold hairpin is not heavy, but its value lies in its exquisite and complex workmanship. It is the latest style. If you want it, it will cost one hundred and thirty taels of silver."
Shen Yu'an felt a chill in his heart.
He only had one hundred taels of silver.
"So expensive? The hairpin is hollow, and it looks like it's only worth seven or eight taels of gold. Shopkeeper, one hundred and thirty taels of silver is too expensive. Can you lower the price?"
"Is this for your sweetheart?"
Shen Yu'an nodded, blushing.
Seeing Shen Yu'an's shy expression, Manager Yu seemed to think of her husband and said with a smile, "Since you like it so much, I'll charge you 120 taels. That's the lowest I can offer."
Shen Yu'an sighed, reluctantly put down the gold hairpin, and went to look at other styles.
But his eyes kept glancing at the butterfly hairpin.
After looking around, he couldn't find anything he liked. He still felt that only the butterfly hairpin was worthy of Chai Tinglian.
At this moment, the shopkeeper seemed to recognize Shen Yu'an and asked, "Young man, are you the one who delivered the braised meat and konjac noodles?"
Shen Yu'an nodded, looking at her with a puzzled expression.
"It really is you! I love your konjac noodles, and your braised meat is a dish my husband often buys to go with his drinks. I see you like this hairpin so much, so the price can't be lowered. How about this, you give me one hundred taels first, and then write me an IOU for twenty taels. You can send it to us when you have the money."
Shen Yu'an was somewhat tempted.
But he felt somewhat guilty about the extra twenty taels of silver.
Tinglian disliked the hair accessory he bought, but her second sister wore it in her hair every day.
I feel a pang of sadness.
In the end, Chai Tinglian overcame her rationality and gritted her teeth to write an IOU.
Shopkeeper Yu wasn't worried about him running away; this young man came to town every day to deliver goods.
"Since I've helped you, could you send me a pound of konjac noodles and two pounds of braised meat every day?"
Manager Yu's words sounded somewhat unconvincing.
She worked as a manager in a jewelry store, earning a high salary, and could afford to eat a pound or two of it. However, every time she went to a restaurant to buy it, she was told that it was sold out.
Unfortunately, she had a particular fondness for this dish, and her husband and children also loved the braised meat from this restaurant.
It often takes going to several restaurants to buy it.
But she couldn't afford to buy too much every day, and this young man probably wouldn't deliver just a pound or two.
"good."
Shen Yu'an readily agreed.
Shopkeeper Yu breathed a sigh of relief, smiled, wrapped up the gold hairpin, and handed it to Shen Yu'an.
Shen Yu'an drove the donkey cart directly to the Chai family's house.
The Chai family was bustling with activity, as if some joyous occasion was approaching.
Just as Shen Yu'an was about to leave, he overheard villagers discussing Chai Tinglian's broken engagement and subsequent remarriage.
He must have misheard, so he quickly stepped forward and asked, "Grandma, why is the Chai family so lively? Is something the matter?"
