Chapter 18 Things Left at the Door
Looking at the fruit in her hand, Liu was a little hesitant.
"Mom, won't this be too tiring for you?"
Zhao Qiao'e took out a small handful of wild vegetables from the basket, sprinkled water on the rest and spread them in the shade in the corner.
"I've been through this before. It doesn't matter whether you're tired or not. You're still pregnant, so take a rest."
Liu pursed her lips and said, "Okay, then mother will take her time."
"I know."
Zhao Qiao'e smiled, glanced at Liu's back, turned her head and sighed.
My daughter-in-law is indeed a good person and can lead a good life. But it will be difficult to deal with my own daughter's temper in the future.
Rich families would definitely look down on her conditions. If she were to marry into an ordinary farmer's family, either she or others would suffer, and she would always have to endure some hardships.
"Oh! What should I do?"
…
Lunch was just ready when the father and his two sons who had been working on the farm came back, and Zhuzi and Zhuangzi, who had been studying at the private school, also returned home.
"Mom, the private school has a new teacher today."
Zhao Qiao'e stopped what she was doing in shock, "What's going on? Mr. Xu is not coming?"
Zhuzi shook his head. "It's not that he won't come. Mr. Xu went to town early in the morning and asked his friend to substitute for him. Mr. Zhuang is a student."
Zhao Qiao'e breathed a sigh of relief.
"I see. I thought Mr. Xu would not teach you anymore." Then he said, "Hurry up and wash your hands before eating."
Lunch was still porridge, with a small bowl of wild vegetables.
After dinner, Song Jinsheng went to help Song Mazi.
The weather was too hot, so Song Jinbao and Song Jinyuan took a short rest at home and went to the fields after noon.
Zhao Qiao'e used to work in a tailor shop, and she would embroider handkerchiefs in her room in the afternoon. As for Liu, she had not left her room since lunch.
“Bang, bang, bang!”
There was a knock on the door, not too loud. In this hot summer day, it could easily be ignored if one was not careful.
Song Yuntang stretched his neck and looked into the yard through the window. Seeing that no one went to open the door, he became curious and put on his shoes and walked out of the yard.
Zhao Qiao'e, who was doing needlework in the room, probably felt a severe soreness in her neck. She raised her head and tried to twist her neck, and happened to see Song Yuntang walking towards the gate of the courtyard.
"Tang'er, where are you going in such a hot day?"
"I seemed to hear a knock on the door just now." Song Yuntang said as he opened the gate.
There was no one outside the yard. There was only a piece of oil paper at the entrance of the yard. On the oil paper was a piece of meat, and next to it were a snack and a bag of candied fruit. Under the snack and candied fruit was an unsigned envelope.
It must be said that when Song Yuntang saw these things, he was surprised for a moment, but he didn't know who sent them, so he didn't reach out to take them immediately.
She looked around; every household had its doors closed, and the sun was shining down, making the air seem distorted by the heat.
"Tang'er, if no one is here, come in early. It will be troublesome if you get hot." Zhao Qiao'e's voice came from inside the house.
"Got it." Song Yuntang squatted down.
Although I don't know who sent the gift, it's definitely not a good idea to just leave it at the door. Even if it doesn't get damaged, it will be taken away by someone else.
Zhao Qiao'e was a little surprised to see her coming in with a bunch of things.
"Tang'er, what did you take?"
“I don’t know who put it at the door.”
Song Yuntang put the things on the long table outside the kitchen, took out the letter paper in the blank envelope and unfolded it. There was only one line of words written on it: The Huang family’s affairs have been resolved for the time being, so you can rest assured these days.
Zhao Qiao'e also left the house and looked at the meat and two bags of snacks on the long table, her eyes full of surprise.
"Oh my God, who put all these at the door?"
Song Yuntang's eyes were bright.
"It's Mr. Xu. He said the Huang family's issue has been temporarily resolved."
"So fast?" Zhao Qiao'e breathed a sigh of relief. "That's good. We don't have to worry all the time. Now we have to take advantage of the fact that the Huang family has no time to deal with us and quickly ask the matchmaker to speed up and settle your marriage."
Song Yuntang had little interest in the matter of engagement.
"You decide."
Looking at her expression, Zhao Qiao'e felt a little helpless.
"You kid, I don't know what you care about." He turned and looked at the things on the table, "Mr. Xu has helped our family so much, we can't accept these things, right?"
"Why not?" Song Yuntang unwrapped the paper packages of snacks and candied fruits, took out a piece of snack and a few candied fruits, and said while eating, "His life is much more valuable than these things. Besides, he has already given them to me. If I send them back, it would seem that I am petty."
After saying that, he went back to his room.
Zhao Qiao'e looked at her back and shook her head.
This girl is still as troublesome as ever.
Mr. Xu was the same. He had been ill for so many years and had not recovered, but he still believed what his own daughter said. I don’t know if this girl is really capable or if Mr. Xu was just desperate and trying any possible means.
Zhao Qiao'e divided two kilograms of pork into several thin strips, strung them together with ropes and hung them in a dark and ventilated place to dry.
I also kept a fresh portion and planned to make a pork and vegetable soup tonight.
As for the snacks and candied fruits left by Song Yuntang, since they were sent to her by Mr. Xu, Zhao Qiao'e didn't know how to distribute them, so she sent them back to her room as they were packed.
Looking at the two paper bags that Zhao Qiao'e placed on the table, Song Yuntang looked at her with some surprise.
Zhao Qiao'e walked closer, took her hand and asked, "When I came back at noon, I saw that your sister-in-law was in a bad mood, and I didn't dare to ask her, but what happened when I was not at home in the morning?"
Song Yuntang pulled his hand back without denying it.
"Yes, there are some things."
"What is it? Tell me in detail."
Seeing that Song Yuntang didn't speak for a long time, Zhao Qiao'e sighed, "Your sister-in-law has suffered some grievances when she came to our house. She is simple and straightforward, and she can live a good life. Now that she is pregnant, it is inevitable that she will have more emotions. We should be more tolerant and forgiving."
Song Yuntang raised his eyebrows, "What happened this morning was not caused by me, it was Tian Qiuyan who instigated it."
Zhao Qiao'e was a little surprised.
"And what about Tian Qiuyan?"
"She said to my sister-in-law that I prescribed her the wrong medicine and that it would harm the baby in her belly."
Zhao Qiao'e's expression became serious, "Did your sister-in-law believe it?"
"It will be soon." Song Yuntang said calmly, "If I hadn't appeared in time to drive Tian Qiuyan out, she might have believed it."
"This is outrageous!" Zhao Qiao'e stood up angrily. "Tian is such a troublemaker. She caused chaos in her own family right after she got married. Now she dares to mess with our family. I'll tear her mouth off!"
Zhao is usually gentle in nature, but no one can stop her when she gets angry.
It would be better to let her deal with Tian. It would be better if they never had anything to do with each other again. This way, she wouldn't have to worry about Tian coming to her house to cause trouble in the future. She doesn't have the time to engage in intrigues with others.
