Chapter 2 A Big Misunderstanding
Zhao Qiao'e looked at Song Yuntang's back, thinking about what she had just said, and felt a little uncomfortable.
For the past three years, she has not known how to get along with her daughter. If she spoke too harshly, she was afraid of offending her, but if she spoke too lightly, she was afraid that it would not have any effect.
She rarely spoke to her family members on a daily basis, so they could only guess what Song Yuntang was thinking based on her behavior.
So the child must be raised by oneself.
Zhaozhao was very sensible. Even when she arrived at the Lin family, she was quickly accepted by Mr. Lin's family, who praised her for raising their daughter well.
She stood in front of Song Yuntang's window and said earnestly, "Tang'er, even if you cut off ties with our family, the Lin family will not accept you anymore. They are worried about Zhao Zhao now, so you'd better give up this idea as soon as possible."
Song Yuntang in the room raised his eyebrows, feeling a little puzzled.
"When did I say I wanted to go back to the Lin family?"
Looking at Song Yuntang who was pretending to be stupid, Zhao Qiao'e suddenly felt a headache and didn't know when her daughter would be able to understand things.
"You didn't say it, but I know what you're thinking."
He wanted to say something, but considering Song Yuntang's fragile self-esteem, he looked up at the sky and ultimately did not continue the topic.
"Forget it. No matter how much I say, you will only think that I am biased towards Zhao Zhao. It is said that it is better to live a miserable life than to die a good death. Just don't be stupid again. Your father and your elder and second brothers will be home soon from working in the fields. Mom will go and cook for them first."
After Zhao Qiao'e's figure disappeared from the window, Song Yuntang sorted out his things while thinking about his next plan.
After raising her for so many years, the Lin family still remembered the old times. When they sent her back to the Song family three years ago, they also allowed her to take some clothes and jewelry with her.
During these three years, Song Yuntang saw that his family was almost unable to make ends meet. Although he refused to say anything, he pawned some of his jewelry and helped his family in ways both openly and secretly.
She may be aloof, but she is not a bad person.
Because she couldn't bear to leave her parents and brother whom she had called the Lin family for so many years, she often wanted to go to the town to see them and be accepted by them again. The Lin family had to consider Lin Zhaozhao's feelings and kept avoiding her, but she kept getting close to them, causing headaches for both families.
Lin Zhaozhao did nothing but brought some cheap snacks to visit the Song family and said a few words about how she missed them. This family wanted to give her their hearts. Every time she left, they would bring chickens and eggs. They almost emptied the chicken coop and loaded them into the carriage for her to take to town, as if they were afraid that she would starve.
There are a total of seven people in the Song family. In addition to Song Jinbao, Zhao Qiao'e, and Song Yuntang, there are four brothers.
The eldest brother, Song Jinyuan, is twenty years old this year. He has been married for one year. His wife, Liu, is now four months pregnant.
The second son, Song Jinsheng, is eighteen years old this year. Originally, Zhao Qiao'e planned to ask a matchmaker to arrange a marriage for him after the autumn harvest this year. But now that the harvest is bad, it may have to be delayed for a year.
The fourth and fifth children are twins. Their names were given by Mr. Xu, the village schoolmaster, whom Song Jinbao asked for two pounds of meat. The elder brother is named Song Chengzhi and the younger brother is Song Chengliang. They are eleven years old this year and are studying in the village school. They are the hope of the whole family.
In the past, Zhao Qiao'e would only save eggs, a precious food ingredient, for her two younger brothers who were still in school to nourish their bodies. Occasionally, she would take the remaining eggs to the town to exchange for a few copper coins to supplement the family income. No one else could eat them.
You can only eat two pieces of chicken during the Chinese New Year.
Lin Zhaozhao should know the situation of the Song family better than her own daughter, and she did not show any mercy when she picked up these things.
Looking at the remaining half box of clothes and a few pieces of jewelry, Song Yuntang couldn't help but sigh.
"Are you stupid?"
It seemed as if she was speaking to herself, but also as if she was speaking to Song Yuntang who had already lost his life.
Given her current status and living in a farm family, the silks and satins in the box were obviously not suitable for wearing anymore. Instead of letting them deteriorate at the bottom of the box, it would be better to take them to the town and sell them for some money while they were still wearable.
Thinking of this, Song Yuntang packed up her clothes and jewelry, planning to find time to carry them to the town to sell them, and then buy one or two sets of cotton clothes that would suit her current clothes.
The remaining money in her hand would be her original capital. Even if she really broke up with the Song family in the end, she would not starve for a while.
…
"Mom, we're back."
As the voice fell, the yard began to become lively. The father and his two sons who had gone out to work came back carrying hoes and buckets of water. Also coming back with them was the eldest daughter-in-law Liu Xiangyun, who was four months pregnant.
"Mom, the mountains are bare these days, and there are only a few wild vegetables to be found."
Liu Xiangyun put the basket on the long table beside the kitchen door, rubbed her waist, looked towards Song Yuntang's room, and felt a little unbalanced in her heart.
She thinks she is a rich lady. Everyone in the family is busy, but she doesn't work!
However, her father-in-law, mother-in-law and her brothers didn't say anything, and as the eldest sister-in-law, she couldn't bring herself to speak up.
Zhao Qiao'e's voice came from the kitchen.
"If you can't dig it, then you can't dig it. Wash your hands and take a rest first. We can have dinner when Zhuzhuzhuzhu returns from the village school."
Zhuzi and Zhuangzi are the nicknames of the brothers Song Chengzhi and Song Chengliang. Before they asked Mr. Xu from the private school to give the brothers names, their family members had always called them that.
Liu responded, washed her hands and went back to her room.
…
Two eggs were fried for dinner. Zhuzi and Zhuangzi shared one, and Liu and Song Yuntang also shared one.
However, Song Yuntang did not eat it. He directly gave half an egg in the bowl to Liu.
"You eat."
After saying this, he ignored the surprised looks of the people present and continued to shovel the thin porridge in the bowl with barely any grains of brown rice.
However, Liu glanced at Song Jinyuan, then looked at her father-in-law and mother-in-law beside her, and did not dare to touch the other half of the egg in the bowl.
Seeing this, Song Jinbao said calmly, "Tang'er gave it to you, so just eat it."
The oldest elder in the family spoke, and Liu then looked at Song Yuntang with a smile.
"Thank you Tang'er."
Song Yuntang ignored her and continued to eat the hard-to-swallow porridge in the bowl.
It's not that she wanted to please anyone, she just felt that it was not easy for a woman to get pregnant.
Half an egg, it doesn’t matter whether she eats it or not, but as a pregnant woman, Liu’s nutritional needs are still quite high.
After dinner, while everyone was at the table, Zhao Qiao'e looked at Song Jinbao beside her and said, "Boss, you and the eldest brother should go to Shili Village tomorrow."
Song Jinbao was puzzled, "What are you going to Shili Village for?"
Zhao Qiao'e glanced in the direction of Song Yuntang and said, "Go to the Huang family and cancel the engagement they have made for Tang'er."
As soon as the words came out, not only Song Yuntang was a little surprised, but the five fathers and sons present, as well as Liu, were also stunned.
"Cancel the engagement?"
Zhao Qiao'e nodded, "Retreat, don't let anyone get killed, it will be more trouble than it's worth."
There was a hint of sharpness in Song Jinbao's eyes as he looked at Song Yuntang.
"But what kind of trouble did you cause when we were away? Do you know how much impact breaking off an engagement has on a woman's reputation? Can't you just be quiet and let your mother and I take a break? If you had Zhao Zhao..."
Hearing Zhao Qiao'e's fake cough, Song Jinbao quickly shut up.
Song Jinyuan and Song Jinsheng looked at each other, both with helplessness in their eyes. This younger sister was indeed not as sensible as Zhao Zhao. Zhao Zhao never put her parents in a difficult position.
The younger Zhuzi and Zhuangzi also looked at each other secretly, their eyes revealing disgust for Song Yuntang.
Ever since Sister Zhaozhao left, not only has Mom's burden become much heavier, but she also often has to act according to her mood. The whole family lets her do what she wants, as if she were serving a rich lady.
Liu didn't show any extra emotion on her face because of the half egg just now, but she felt a little regretful in her heart. The betrothal gift was twelve taels of silver. How long would the family have to work to earn that much?
And after marrying into the Huang family, maybe I could get some benefits back to my parents' home.
