Chapter 1: Talking about marriage, tofu, and river shrimp

Wash the radish, cut it into strips, spread it out in a winnowing basket, and then put it on a rack to dry. After two or three days, when it is dry and wilted, you can put it away. When you want to eat it, take it out, cut it into pieces and mix it with some seasonings. It tastes good with porridge or noodles.

After drying the radishes, Zhou Chunlan began preparing dinner. She had some fresh river shrimp in the bucket. They'd been sold in town the day before, and the prawn vendor next door, anxious to close, had suggested trading them for some vegetables. Zhou Chunlan, eager to treat her brother to a treat, agreed. There was a full bowl, and she planned to use half to stir-fry some chives. Half would be enough for the two of them, leaving the other half for tomorrow.

Later that evening, Lin Yan entered the house carrying a bundle of firewood. Amo wasn't in the yard, and there were sounds of cooking in the kitchen. Lin Yan first placed the firewood in the woodshed, then turned into the kitchen. As expected, Amo was preparing dinner.

"Oh, I'm back."

"I'm back, wash your hands and get ready to eat."

"What delicious food are you making today?" Lin Yan looked curiously.

"Fry some leeks and river shrimps, and make some egg and cabbage soup. It's almost done. Serve the rice first." Zhou Chunlan scooped a bowl of water into the pot, brought it to a boil, then beat in two eggs. When the eggs were almost set, she added the cabbage. When serving, she added some salt and scooped in a little bit of lard to dissolve it.

"Okay."

Lin Yansheng prepared the meal, and A-mo scooped the soup into a large bowl and turned off the fire. The two of them brought the food to the main room, which was brighter there.

Zhou Chunlan served Lin Yan a bowl of egg soup and said, "Yan'er, drink it while it's hot. It gets cold in the morning and evening, so it'll warm you up."

"Thank you, A-Mo." Now it's October and the weather is starting to get cooler. It's only at noon when the sun is strong and it's still a little hot. It's indeed cool in the morning and evening.

Lin Yan picked up a piece of leek and river shrimp with chopsticks and put it into Amo's bowl, and also picked up some and put it in his own mouth.

While eating, Zhou Chunlan told Lin Yan what happened today.

After hearing this, Lin Yan hesitated and said, "Ah Mo, have you seen this family before? What does Mr. Zhao look like? What kind of person is he?" Although he had been there to buy tofu a few times, he only saw Ah Mo Zhao every time and just nodded and said hello.

Zhou Chunlan knew that her brother cared about his appearance and usually didn't dare let outsiders know. As his mother, how could he not know it? She suddenly felt like laughing.

"This family is pretty good. They're all in the tofu business. They get up early to make tofu, and Aunt Zhao sells it in the tofu shop in the morning. It's usually sold out by noon. This kid Zhao is called Shi Yun. I've seen him from afar, and he's not a bad-looking guy."

Lin Yan fell silent, his eyes rolling.

Zhou Chunlan knew what he was thinking at first glance. She tapped Lin Yan's forehead lightly with her chopsticks and said, "You don't want to go and take a look at her, do you?"

"Well, I'll just take a sneak peek, just one glance," Lin Yan put his hands together.

"What do you want to see? If the villagers saw us, who knows what they would say to you. Besides, did you run into him the last few times you went to buy tofu? He probably wasn't at the tofu shop."

"Ah, I'll go to his house tomorrow to buy some tofu and take a sneak peek. If he's not there, forget it. We won't be caught. Please, Ah~"

Under Lin Yan's constant nagging, Zhou Chunlan had no choice but to agree. She said helplessly, "Let's make a deal first. You go early, when there aren't many people in the village yet, buy some and come back right away. Do you understand?"

"I heard it. That's the best."
