Time flies. Tomorrow is the Mid-Autumn Festival. After Lin Yan finished his busy work at noon and there were not many people in the shop, he went with Zhao Shiyun to buy things for the Mid-Autumn Festival.
The streets are bustling with people coming and going. Most of the shops on the street have hung red lanterns, which sway in the wind, creating a warm and peaceful scene.
The two planned to go to the pastry shop to buy mooncakes first. There were quite a lot of people buying mooncakes in this pastry shop. Lin Yan pulled Zhao Shiyun in and asked the waiter to pack five mooncakes each with five nuts, lotus seed paste and red bean paste for them. The store also had a new lotus seed paste and egg yolk filling, so Lin Yan also ordered five.
"Please pack two gift boxes of each flavor for me. I'll give them away, and the rest are optional," Lin Yan instructed. Zhao Shiyun pulled out his purse. These mooncakes were quite expensive, ten wen each, and the egg yolk and lotus seed paste ones were fifteen wen. Including the gift boxes, the total cost was two hundred and forty-five wen. Lin Yan took the mooncakes with a pinch of regret and put them in his backpack. He planned to buy a lot today, so he carried the backpack with him.
We wanted to try some other pastries, but there were too many people, so we gave up. We walked around a bit and bought some newly released oranges. The oranges were still green, so they weren't sweet, but oranges are a must-have for Mid-Autumn Festival every year, just to suit the occasion.
There are also indispensable grapefruits and pomegranates. As the Mid-Autumn Festival is approaching, there are quite a lot of people selling grapefruits and pomegranates on the street. Most of them are home-grown. Lin Yan picked five grapefruits and ten pomegranates from an old man.
The pomelo was heavy and large, so Zhao Shiyun took out the mooncakes first, put three pomeloes in, and the pomegranate, and then piled the mooncakes on top. He and Lin Yan each held a pomelo and walked back.
The two of them also had to go to North Street to buy ducks. People usually eat ducks during the Mid-Autumn Festival because the Mid-Autumn Festival is when ducks are fat and strong. Duck meat is cool in nature and suitable for consumption in autumn. In addition, "duck" and "pressure" are homophones of each other, which means to suppress evil spirits and bring good luck.
"Should we buy a few ducks to raise next year?" Lin Yan suggested.
"Go back and ask my mom and the others. After all, we have chickens and pigs at home."
"Yeah." Lin Yan nodded and looked around.
"What are you looking for?" Zhao Shiyun asked curiously.
"Let me see if Brother Tao is here." The last time he bought a duck was from Yang Tao. The duck looked good and the meat was tender. Lin Yan wanted to buy more ducks from his shop.
After a while, Lin Yan saw Yang Tao. He and Yang Xu were standing in front of the cage, helping customers weigh their food. Lin Yan trotted over and greeted them.
"Brother Tao, Yangxu."
"Brother Yan!" Yang Tao looked up in surprise, "Are you here to buy ducks?"
"Yes, the one I bought last time was very good. Can you help me pick out another one?"
Yang Tao nodded, looked into the cage, quickly grabbed a duck's neck and pulled it out. Zhao Shiyun hurriedly wanted to take it, but Yang Tao dodged for a moment, tied the duck's feet with a rope, and then handed it to him.
Lin Yan paid the money and wanted to reminisce with Yang Tao, but unfortunately there were a few people who were anxious to weigh the ducks, so Lin Yan had to give up, said goodbye to the two of them, and followed Zhao Shiyun back to the shop.
In the shop, Widow Liu and Sun Ruoqing had already tidied it up. Lin Yan took out mooncakes and fruits, giving each of them a box of mooncakes, a pomelo, and two pomegranates. "Auntie, cousin, these are festival gifts. Tomorrow is Mid-Autumn Festival, so the shop will be closed. You should stay home and enjoy the holiday."
The two received the gifts, surprised and delighted. Although Widow Liu had received gifts before, it was never as many as this time. There were mooncakes and fruits. She smiled and thanked him. Sun Ruoqing had just arrived and received a gift. He was a little surprised. "Brother Yan, I've only been here for a few days. I can't accept this."
"As long as you work in the shop, you will get a holiday gift. Besides, I've already bought it. If you don't want it, I'll give it to a beggar on the street." Lin Yan joked.
Although Sun Ruoqing knew he wouldn't actually give it to the beggar, she seemed persuaded and accepted the gift. Lin Yan found two small backpacks for the two of them to carry the mooncakes and fruit in, otherwise, if they returned to the village later and were seen by the aunties, they would definitely complain again.
While Zhao Shiyun and his cousin's wife were loading the car, Lin Yan pulled Widow Liu and Yue Ge'er to the kitchen, took out a string of copper coins and stuffed them into Yue Ge'er's hand, "Aunt, you and Yue Ge'er are one family, so I will only prepare one holiday gift. You won't be able to finish more, so Yue Ge'er's holiday gift will be replaced with copper coins." Lin Yan strung out fifty copper coins, which was almost the price of one holiday gift.
Widow Liu waved her hands and said, "How can this be? One portion is enough, no charge." Yue Ge'er also nodded and stuffed the copper coin back into Lin Yan's hand.
Lin Yan pretended to sigh, "Then I'll use this money to buy another holiday gift. You guys wait here."
Hearing that he was going to buy another holiday gift, Widow Liu became anxious and quickly grabbed Lin Yan's arm: "Don't go, don't go, we'll take the money." Yue Ge'er also persuaded him: "Boss, don't bother, we'll take it." Lin Yan finally smiled and patted Yue Ge'er on the shoulder: "That's right, have a good holiday, and let me know if you need anything."
After leaving the kitchen, Zhao Shiyun and Sun Ruoqing had already loaded the cart. Lin Yan stretched and said to Zhao Shiyun, "After a busy day, we finally arranged all the festival gifts. Let's go home and have a good holiday tomorrow." Zhao Shiyun smiled and nodded. Everyone got on the donkey cart and drove towards home.
