After the Mid-Autumn Festival, it was almost time to harvest soybeans. Lin Yan still closed the shop for two days to let everyone go back to harvest soybeans. He thought that he also had to harvest soybeans at home, and there would be no one at home to cook, so his mother would have to come back again, which would be very troublesome.
During the busy farming season, every household was busy working in the fields. Because they had to harvest soybeans, the Zhao family simply skipped making tofu for the next two days. Early in the morning, Lin Yan and Zhao Shiyun got up together. He planned to cook some tomato and egg noodle soup so they could eat their fill before going back to the fields.
Put the kneaded dough aside to rise. Lin Yan took two tomatoes and cut them into cubes, beat a few eggs, and washed the onions and vegetables.
Scramble the beaten eggs until cooked through and set aside. Pour a spoonful of lard into the pan, heat the oil, add the tomatoes, and stir-fry constantly until the tomatoes are soft and gritty. Add a spoonful of water and continue simmering. Once the water boils, add the noodles, stirring with chopsticks to prevent them from sticking. When the noodles are almost done, add the previously scrambled eggs and a handful of greens. Season with salt and soy sauce, and sprinkle with chopped green onions before serving.
Lin Yan turned off the fire and shouted at the door of the kitchen: "It's time to eat noodles."
Yu Ge'er was washing up in the yard. He wiped his face, went into the kitchen, picked up a bowl and chopsticks, and started to scoop up the noodles. After a few tries, he finally scooped up a little bit. Lin Yan handed him the bamboo flute and said, "Use the bamboo flute to scoop."
Yu Ge'er scooped a bowl, added a little hot sauce, mixed it well, and started eating.
The two of them sat in the yard and ate a few bites before the other three came over and went into the kitchen to pick up noodles and eat them themselves.
"Brother Yan, you stay at home today. I will ask Brother Yu to come back for lunch at noon." Zhao Shiyun instructed before leaving.
"Okay, got it." The sun was too strong and Lin Yan didn't want to go out. It made him dizzy.
He took a sip of the cold mung bean soup and lay down on the table in the main room, feeling like he didn't want to do anything.
This mung bean soup was made last night and kept in the well on ice. It was just the right time to bring it to the fields. Lin Yan was thinking about what to make for lunch today. He wanted to make tofu and fish soup, but unfortunately, there was no tofu at home today.
He went to the kitchen and looked around, but there was only a piece of pork belly that he had taken out of the well this morning and some green peppers that he had just picked that morning.
Just make a pancake and wrap it with braised meat and eggs.
Lin Yan washed the pork belly and took out seven or eight eggs. He washed the shells and put them into the pot with water and cooked them.
Lin Yan's braised meat is not authentic, he just adds some star anise, bay leaves, cinnamon and peppercorns to season it, but he doesn't care, as long as it tastes good.
Take out the cooked pork belly and eggs, Lin Yan peeled the egg shells, cut the pork belly into large pieces, cleaned the pot, added water again, and brought it to a boil. When the water boiled, throw in the star anise, bay leaves, cinnamon, and peppercorns, then pour in half a bowl of soy sauce to season. Lin Yan tasted it for saltiness. The braising liquid for braised meat should be a little saltier so that the meat will be cooked just right.
It wasn’t salty enough, so Lin Yan added some salt and cooked it for about half an hour before pouring the pork belly and braised eggs in and simmering them.
"Oh, dried chili peppers." Lin Yan slapped his forehead, he almost forgot. He quickly went to the utility room to pull out a few dried chili peppers, broke them in half with his hands, and threw them directly into the pot.
While the meat and eggs were braised, Lin Yan began making pancakes. He took out the flour, added a suitable amount of warm water, and began kneading the dough. Once it was smooth and not sticky, he divided the dough into small pieces and rolled them into thin sheets. He brushed the sheets with oil, sprinkled them with salt and chopped green onions, then rolled them up, flattened them, and rolled them into round shapes.
After lighting a fire and heating the pot, Lin Yan put the pancake in and fried it slowly over low heat. After a while, both sides of the pancake became golden and crispy, exuding an enticing aroma.
The braised meat and eggs were almost done. Lin Yan turned off the heat and let them soak in the brine for a while longer so that the flavor would soak in. He cut the pancakes and set them aside to cool. He also cut some green chili strips to put in the pancakes later.
Seeing that time was almost up, Lin Yan removed the braised pork and egg and let them cool. He then minced the pork and cut the egg in half. He stuffed the pork into the pancake, added some shredded green peppers and half a braised egg, and wrapped it in baking paper. Lin Yan wrapped twelve in total and stacked them in a basket.
Around noon, Yu Ge'er came back with the jar. "Brother, I'm here to get lunch." Lin Yan smiled and handed him the basket. "Here, take it home and eat it. It's still hot."
Yu Ge'er carried the basket and filled a can of mung bean soup. He carried the basket in one hand and held the can carefully in his arms as he left. Lin Yan looked at his back for a while before he came to his senses. He also picked up a pancake and started eating.
On this side, Yu Ge'er came to his own field with lunch. Everyone was already hungry, so they stopped what they were doing, washed their hands in the stream beside the field, and came over to sit under a tree.
Yu Ge'er put down the basket and pot, made mung bean soup for everyone, and then picked up a pancake to eat.
"I'm starving." Yu Ge'er took a big bite, his mouth full of braised meat. He squinted his eyes and chewed it, feeling satisfied. "It's delicious."
Not far away, each family was eating the lunch they brought with them, including multi-grain steamed buns, flatbreads, brown rice porridge with pickles, and of course, some ate meat. For a while, the smell of various foods wafted through the fields.
Yu Ge'er finished one and started eating the second. When he looked up, Zhao Shiyun had already eaten the third one. He yelled, "Brother, are you a pig? You eat so fast."
Zhao Shiyun swallowed the food in his mouth and said, "You are the pig."
Yu Ge'er glared at him.
In the end, Zhao Shiyun ate four, Zhao Qiming ate three, Li Yuemei and Yu Ge'er each ate two. "There is one left, who wants to eat it?" Li Yuemei picked up the last pancake. Zhao Shiyun waved his hands. He was so full that it reached his throat. Zhao Qiming also shook his head. Li Yuemei had to share it with Yu Ge'er.
Everyone lay under the tree and rested for half an hour before getting up to continue harvesting soybeans.
