Lin Yan spent every spare moment these past two days researching barbecue. Zhao Shiyun bought two strips of pork belly and one piece of lean pork because he wanted to sell stuffed tofu.
Lin Yan first cut two slices of lean meat and planned to fry them in a frying pan. But isn't this just frying meat? Why is it called barbecue?
Lin Yan shook his head, not wanting to think too much. He tried frying a piece first. He had accidentally cut the lean meat a little too thick. After both sides were cooked, Lin Yan sprinkled some salt and chili powder on it, carefully picked it up with chopsticks, blew on it, and took a bite.
"Hmm, too tough..." The meat was too thick and lean, so the taste wasn't very good. Lin Yan picked up the kitchen knife and tried to slice another piece. After trying for a long time, he still didn't know how to start. Although the slice was a bit thick, it still required some skill to cut it again.
He looked around and saw a rolling pin in the corner. He took it and tried to pound the meat on the chopping board. After pounding it a dozen times, it was indeed much thinner. Lin Yan continued pounding, and when he felt it was almost done, he stopped and looked at the meat slices. He had pounded them very thinly.
[It seems overcooked. I don't know how it tastes.] Lin Yan fried the meat according to the same steps as before. As soon as it came out of the pan, Yu Ge'er came in after smelling the aroma.
Lin Yan cut the meat into two halves and said, "Try it."
Yu Ge'er took a careful bite and said, "Hmm! Delicious." However, he couldn't tell what it was and why it was so thin. "Brother, what kind of meat is this?"
"This is lean meat. I pounded it thin with a rolling pin." Lin Yan explained, "I cut it too thick just now."
Yu Ge'er nodded. "Can it only be fried? Is there any other way to eat it?"
This remark inspired Lin Yan to realize that there was more than one way to eat meat. He cut two more slices of pork belly, learning from his mistakes this time by slicing them thinly. After frying them, he sprinkled them with chili powder and salt.
Yu Ge'er couldn't wait to eat it, "Brother, this is much more delicious."
Lin Yan thought so too, and he also wanted to grill some vegetables, but there were no vegetables to grill now, just some radishes and cabbages.
They decided to have grilled pork belly tonight. Lin Yan cut the pork belly he planned to eat in half, saving one half and slicing the other half thinly on a plate. He planned to marinate it with soy sauce to see if it would taste better.
While the meat was marinating, Lin Yan cut the lean meat into thick slices and began to pound it like before. Yu Ge'er quickly stepped forward to help: "Brother, let me do it."
Lin Yan didn't refuse. He asked him to pound the lean meat until it was the same shape as before, while he began to fry the pork belly. Lin Yan expertly flipped the pork belly slices in the pan, and soon the pork belly became golden and fragrant. He scooped out the fried pork belly and set it aside. By then, Yu Ge'er had also finished pounding the lean meat, and Lin Yan planned to make some pork soup.
I just fried this lean meat and it tasted good, but the pork belly was also fried, so it would be more appropriate to cook the lean meat slices in a different way.
There was not much of anything at home, but tofu was the most abundant. Lin Yan asked Yu Ge'er to get a piece of tofu, cut it into small pieces, and blanch it in water for a while.
Add water to the pot, add tofu and meat slices and stir-fry until both are well cooked. Add salt and soy sauce to taste, and sprinkle with chopped green onions before serving.
Lin Yan sprinkled chili powder on the pork belly beside him. Because it was marinated with soy sauce earlier, he didn't add salt now. Lin Yan picked up the bowl and shook it twice to coat the pork belly with chili powder.
Yu Ge'er went to call everyone to dinner. When they sat down, they saw two unfamiliar dishes on the table: a bowl of golden, crispy pork belly coated in chili powder, and a bowl of thin, curled, pink, and tender tofu slices.
Li Yuemei first picked up a piece of pork belly coated with chili powder and put it into her mouth, chewing it gently. "Hmm, spicy and delicious, with a nice burnt aroma. Delicious." After hearing this, everyone also picked up their chopsticks. Zhao Shiyun took a bite and his eyes lit up. "Brother Yan, how did you come up with this? It's so delicious."
Lin Yan smiled and said, "I heard the waiter say that day that I could just fry the pork belly and mix it with chili powder. But I think it would taste better if I added the cumin he mentioned."
Yu Ge'er scooped a spoonful of tofu and pork soup and took a sip. "This soup is delicious, the tofu is tender and smooth, and the pork slices are not tough." After drinking it, he told everyone about how Lin Yan accidentally made this pork slice, and laughed.
Everyone was enjoying the food while listening to Yu Ge'er's jokes. His hands never stopped talking. When Yu Ge'er finished talking, everyone was half full, but he had only taken a few bites. Seeing this, Yu Ge'er stopped talking and quickly picked up some food to eat.
Zhao Shiyun asked, "Brother Yan, are you planning to sell these two foods?"
Lin Yan hesitated. His stall wasn't big enough, and he didn't have enough energy to make so many dishes, so mistakes were inevitable. He expressed his concerns, and Li Yuemei said, "Indeed, I think we should just sell fragrant tofu and stuffed tofu first. Maybe when it gets bigger, we can open a shop and sell other dishes later. What do you think?"
The whole family has no objections. As long as they have enough food and clothing, they are satisfied with their daily life.
