Chapter 7: Getting Married 1, Putting on Makeup, Picking Up the Bride

Early in the morning on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month, before Lin Yan even opened his eyes, he was dug up by Aunt Fang and Aunt Liu who came to help. Aunt Fang urged him to wash so that she could massage his face.

Lin Yan tossed and turned until midnight last night before falling asleep, so he was feeling dizzy now. He walked unsteadily to the courtyard to wash up, but was then pulled back to his room by Aunt Fang. Lin Yan grabbed a steamed bun, otherwise he would not be able to eat it after applying lip balm.

"Brother Yan, come back to life. Today is your big day, you can't be so listless."

"Aunt, I get it. I just didn't sleep well last night." Lin Yan chewed a steamed bun and yawned, tears still in the corners of his eyes.

"Our brother Yan is getting married, he's nervous." Aunt Fang joked.

"Aunt Fang, please stop teasing me. I just can't bear to leave my mom." Lin Yan shyly found an excuse. He was really nervous, and it was also true that he couldn't bear to leave his mom.

Aunt Fang said as she twisted his face with thread, "You, I know you're filial. Our two families aren't far away, so just come back often."

Lin Yan whispered, "After getting married, how can I go back to my parents' home often? I'm afraid people will gossip about me."

Aunt Fang sighed: "If my in-laws are kind, they won't pick on you. I think the Zhao family is very understanding. If you talk to them nicely, they will agree."

Lin Yan nodded and stuffed the remaining bun into his mouth in a few bites.

Just put on some simple makeup, lipstick, and some flower ornaments. Aunt Fang finished the flower ornaments for him, supported his shoulders, and held him in front of the bronze mirror, "Look, our Brother Yan is so handsome."

Lin Yan looked at himself in the mirror and pursed his lips, making them appear even and fuller. The plum blossom flower ornaments on his forehead were like stars, their vibrant red color complementing the red mole on his earlobe, making him look like a radiant rosy jade. Lin Yan smiled slightly, thinking he could look this good.

"Put on your wedding dress, and I'll ask your mom to come in and comb your hair."

Zhou Chunlan looked at her little brother, feeling really reluctant to let him go. Her eyes were red as she took Lin Yan's hand and said, "Yan'er, after you get married, you must live a good life with Shi Yun. If you are wronged, don't hold it in. Come back and tell your mom."

"Ah, don't worry. As for you, you have to take good care of yourself at home. Don't be reluctant to eat or wear clothes. I will come back to see you often." Lin Yan choked.

"Oh, okay, okay, you can't cry on this happy day. I'll comb your hair for you."

Lin's father fled to Luoyang Village. After settling down, he made some money by doing some small business. Then he bought land and built a house. Later, he married Zhou's mother from Zhoujia Village.

Zhou's mother's father favored boys over girls and wanted to sell his daughter to a local lord as a concubine when she reached a certain age. When Lin's father was doing small business in the town, he took a liking to Zhou's mother when she came to the town to visit the Lantern Festival during the Qiqiao Festival.

I heard that her father wanted to sell his daughter, so he used a little trick to buy Zhou Chunlan, thinking that they had severed their relationship and had no contact for so many years. So when Lin Yan got married, Zhou's mother did not inform the other family.

So there weren't many people in the Lin family today, except for a few aunts who came to help.

Zhao family

Zhao Shiyun was wearing a bright red wedding dress and standing at the door with his father and mother to welcome guests. He was so happy that his face was almost broken by smiling.

"Brother, the auspicious time is almost here, let's get ready to go and pick up the newlyweds." Zhao Shiyu ran over hurriedly.

Zhao Shiyun responded, went into the house, and pulled up the donkey cart. This cart had been specially equipped with a carriage for the wedding, covered with a thick quilt, and decorated with wedding characters all around. He led the wedding procession to Lin Yan's house. A large red flower was tied to the donkey's body. The onlookers saw the wedding character on its head and burst into laughter. Zhao Shiyu shook his head and smiled bitterly, holding his forehead with his hand: "Ah, really."

The crowd played music and arrived at Lin Yan's house half a quarter of an hour later. Only two aunts were guarding the gate of the Lin family. Zhao Shiyun knew the situation of the Lin family and did not ask any more questions. He bowed to the two aunts and said, "Hello, aunts. I am here today to ask for the hand of Brother Yan. Can you let me in?"

Aunt Fang covered her mouth and laughed, "Even though we are few in number, it's not that easy for us to let you in."

The villagers started to make noises behind Zhao Shiyun: "That's right, it's not that easy for you to marry Yan Ge'er."

Zhao Shiyun took out the red envelope he had prepared long ago and handed it over, saying with a smile, "Aunts, please be kind enough to give me a hand."

Zhou Chunlan stepped forward and said, "Alright, alright, let him in." She smiled at Zhao Shiyun and said, "Aunts, you two are just joking. Go ahead, Brother Yan is waiting for you."

Zhao Shiyun was touched: "Thank you, Mom. Don't worry, I will treat Yan'er well and will never let him suffer any injustice."

Lin Yan stood at the door of the main hall, watching Zhao Shiyun walking towards him. He was dressed in red, his handsome face full of smiles, and his hair was tied with a red headband. Lin Yan felt that the fluttering headband floated into his heart. It was like there was a drum in his heart, beating louder and louder.
