Chapter 23: Jaw-dropping

“Father, Mother, I want to change Da Ni and Er Ni’s names. Otherwise, everyone in the village calls them by these names, and when one name is called, several people will respond.”

Since everyone was present, Cheng Yue settled the matter, saying that they could simply change the name to the new one from now on, saving the need for further notification.

As for Chen An, Cheng Yue had mentioned this before, and he agreed wholeheartedly. He had wanted to change his two daughters' names for a long time, but unfortunately, he was illiterate and couldn't come up with any good names.

Cheng Yue hadn't really liked her two daughters before, so naturally she ignored this matter.

His older brother, Chen Ping, was literate, but why would he care what the two girls' names were?

Upon hearing Cheng Yue's words, Da Ni and Er Ni were both surprised and delighted, their eyes sparkling. Their mother was actually going to change their names?

Mr. Cheng nodded and said, "If you're going to change your name, let's go with Xiao Lin Cong Mu. You'll know they're siblings just by hearing it. Daughter, have you thought of a name yet?"

Since the daughter brought it up, she must have a plan.

Madam Wu laughed, "Good, good, the name should have been changed long ago. Your name was chosen by your father himself. Our daughters are all treasures, so naturally they should be given good names."

Wu couldn't stand the idea that girls were a waste of money. They all came from the same womb, so what was the difference between them and sons?

Besides, it's women who give birth, so what woman would dislike her own daughter?

Chen An affectionately patted his two daughters' heads, and Cheng Yue smiled and said:

"Yes, children are all their parents' treasures. I've thought of two characters, Tong and Ning. Da Ni will be changed to Chen Tong, and Er Ni will be changed to Chen Ning."

As Cheng Yue spoke, she wrote on the ground with a stick.

Father Cheng murmured two names, “I have a tung tree whose flowers are abundant and whose lemons are as clear as jade in the sky.”

(This was originally a line from an ancient poem, but the author dared not write it out for fear of being accused of plagiarism, so this is the only way to write it.)

Chen Tong, Chen Ning, both are good names.

Cheng Yue smiled. You really couldn't tell her father was a student of the Imperial Academy if he didn't recite poetry. She didn't think too much about it, mainly because she had already forgotten all the poems she had learned.

Da Ni and Er Ni were confused. What Grandpa had just said sounded nice, but they couldn't understand it. They were both full of doubt.

Cheng Yue explained, "It means I hope you are full of vigor, vitality, and good fortune, just like your brother's name."

The explanation is too profound for my two daughters to understand. In short, it's a good name. Just say something auspicious to make the children happy.

Chen Lin didn't change his name. Cheng Yue was afraid he would be disappointed, so she mentioned it too. You can't be biased, can you?

Sure enough, the three children beamed with joy; their names actually had such a wonderful meaning.

Chen An was also very happy, but thinking that his two daughters did not yet have household registration, he told Cheng Yue that they would go and get it done together after his leg injury healed.

Girls in rural areas are not valued, and household registration is optional. They are only registered when they need a travel permit to go out or when the government conducts a general survey.

However, the vast majority of women never leave the village in their entire lives, so there are countless women without household registration.

"It's getting late, we should head back." Mr. Cheng looked up, then remembered something and added, "Daughter, your older brother and I will help with the wheat harvest, so don't worry."

Chen An quickly said, "Father, how could I trouble you and my elder brother to come over? Don't worry about harvesting the wheat. The people who helped us repair the roof are all my good brothers. They will help with the harvest. It's already been arranged."

My father-in-law's family lived in a different village. Although it wasn't far for them to come over, they had their own things to do. How could they trouble my father-in-law's family with the wheat harvest? It would be too inappropriate.

Cheng Yue nodded, and Wu patted her hand, saying, "We are family after all. No matter how good their relationship is, we can't always cause them trouble."

Cheng Yang patted his chest and added, "Yes, little sister, brother-in-law, it's only right that our family helps each other. I have plenty of energy, I won't get tired!"

"Let's talk about this later!" Cheng Yue neither agreed nor refused.

There's still a month until the wheat harvest, and who knows what might happen in that month? She could hire people if she had the money, but she didn't want to burden her father and older brother.

Mr. Cheng stood up, put on the long gown he had just taken off, and said, "Then we'll come back later. Alright, we have to go now."

Wu and Cheng Yang also stood up. Cheng Yang pulled Cheng Yue aside, rummaged through his clothes, pulled out a string of copper coins, stuffed them into Cheng Yue's hand, and whispered:

"Little sister, take this money and buy some fine grains to nourish yourself. Look how thin you are, your big brother could crush you with just one finger."

Your nephew's education costs a lot, and I can't help much. You can use this money first, and if it runs out, your older brother will carry the heavy loads.

Now that my younger sister has separated from the family, I'm not afraid that any gifts I give her will end up in someone else's hands, so I'll give her as much as I can.

There's no need to even think about it; those things from before must have been embezzled by that wicked old woman, Zhao. Otherwise, how could my little sister and nephew be so thin and weak?

Looking at Cheng Yang's tanned face, Cheng Yue felt a lump in her throat and tears welled up in her eyes again.

"Don't cry, don't cry. It's a good thing that you've separated. The hardship will only last for a while. Once your brother-in-law's leg heals, things will get better."

Cheng Yang was at a loss. Why was his little sister crying again?

Cheng Yue stuffed the money back into Cheng Yang's hand, wiped away her tears, and said, "Brother, I don't want this money. You take it back and save it for your nephew. We've divided the money among ourselves after the family split."

Cheng Yue told Cheng Yang about the family division. Cheng Yang looked incredulous. His younger sister always spoke softly, but he didn't expect her to handle the family division so efficiently.

He always thought his younger sister resembled their father, but now he realizes she resembles their mother!

Mr. Cheng waited on the side, wondering, "What are those two siblings whispering about?"

"Father, Mother, wait for me!" Cheng Yue ignored Cheng Yang, who was standing still, and called out to her father and Wu Shi before heading straight for the kitchen.

I packed half a bag of rice and flour, a clay pot of chicken, and some brown and white sugar. I didn't pack too much, because I was afraid they would overthink it.

Even so, Mr. Cheng and his family were still taken aback. "Oh my, daughter, where did you get so many precious things?"

Cheng Yue said lightly, "These were all taken from the child's grandmother. Over the years, all the things you gave them have ended up in their mouths. It's not unreasonable for me to take them back. You can keep them; we have more."

Cheng Yang already knew about this and didn't think it was a big deal.

Mr. Cheng and Mrs. Wu were so shocked that their jaws almost dropped. Their daughter was speaking ill of her mother-in-law and taking her things. Although what she did was right, why was she saying it so confidently?

She glanced at her son-in-law and saw a faint smile on his lips, looking quite proud. It seemed that even her son-in-law thought his daughter had done the right thing.

Thinking this, Mr. Cheng and Mrs. Wu took a deep breath and immediately became happy again. This son-in-law spoils his daughter too much. It's so good.

Chen An also said, "Father and Mother, please take it. You have given us a lot of subsidies over the years, and we have not been able to repay you in any way. This is what we should do."

"Okay, we'll accept it then, but you're not allowed to send it again in the future."

Although Mrs. Wu said this, she felt very warm inside. As parents, they didn't expect anything in return. They were just happy that their daughter and son-in-law were thinking of them.

It's all out of filial piety from the daughter; accepting it will put her mind at ease.
