The next morning, all the bricks and tiles were delivered, just in time to run into the villagers who were on their way to collect herbs. Seeing the convoy heading up the mountain, the group was dumbfounded once again.
"With so many bricks and tiles, how big of a workshop is Cheng Yue going to build?"
Each of their families sent men and sons up the mountain to help. They already knew that Cheng Yue was going to build a workshop. They thought it would be a small workshop, but they didn't expect that with so many bricks and tiles, it would probably be enough to build more than a dozen houses!
"I wonder what kind of workshop Cheng Yue built, and what she makes?"
Aunt Li said confidently, "No matter what it is, it's definitely a big business! Haven't you seen Chunlai's wife going up the mountain before dawn these past two days and not coming back until evening? She's been helping Cheng Yue with her chores!"
Her house was right behind Liu Chunlai's diagonal house. Cui Miao, who left early and returned late, had seen it long ago, but she was too busy gathering herbs to ask.
"You know what, I've seen Changxi's wife and Dajiang's wife come up the mountain these past few days, and they're all smiles every day!"
Aunt Zhou exclaimed, "Oh! It seems only women like us can handle this kind of thing with Cheng Yue!"
Aunt Li's eyes widened with excitement. "Sister Zhou is right! Cheng Yue must need to hire people to build such a big workshop! Let's go ask her!"
The more they talked about it, the more excited they became, and the atmosphere suddenly became lively. "If only this were true!"
Hearing the commotion outside while washing clothes in the yard, Zhao slammed the gate shut in anger, yelling, "Building a damn workshop! It's so noisy every day!"
Zhao has been feeling extremely depressed lately, both physically and mentally. Ever since she was beaten by Cheng Yue's wicked mother, she hasn't fully recovered yet!
Outside, Granny Sun and her family were always causing trouble. During the day, they would point fingers and curse at them, and at night they would come in and out and rummage through their things, making it impossible for them to sleep peacefully!
He has a good-for-nothing son who only bullies her! He never leaves the house all day long! All he does is stay with that woman, making her feel scared or anxious every day, treating her like a precious treasure!
She has to cook, and she has to wash dirty clothes. What a life she lives, worse than that of a pig or a dog!
As for Chen Gen and Chen Shu, one is a good-for-nothing and the other has disappeared somewhere and doesn't even come home now!
Fortunately, there is Chen You who is studying, which gives us a glimmer of hope. Otherwise, what's the point of living?
It was thought that Chen Ping had lost his job and Chen You's studies were ruined, but Chen You was lucky and met a wealthy man who sponsored him!
She only saw her eldest grandson once, and he never came back. She couldn't see him even if she wanted to.
Thinking about her miserable life and comparing it to Cheng Yue and Chen An's good life, she felt both regret and resentment!
"Oh dear! Granny Zhao, you still have the energy to curse! You're truly born to serve others, being bossed around all day and still having the energy! Looks like you don't have enough dirty laundry. Your daughter-in-law is really filial to you!"
Aunt Li stood on her tiptoes and looked into the yard with a mocking expression. Two large basins of dirty clothes were piled up, and Zhao looked bitter and resentful. It was so funny to look at her!
When I was Cheng Yue's mother-in-law, I treated her like this, and now I'm being treated like this by my new daughter-in-law. It's karma!
"You! It's none of your business! Stay away from my house!"
Zhao was furious! What kind of mother-in-law would act like this? So pathetic, being bullied and humiliated by her daughter-in-law! And to be mocked by someone like Li Chou Nu! She was utterly humiliated!
If it weren't for Chen You's sake, she would have divorced that wicked woman long ago! Of course, what chilled her heart the most was her son Chen Ping, who had forgotten his mother after marrying a wife!
Aunt Li scoffed, "Who wants to live near your house? I feel unlucky living behind your house! Looks like I need to earn more money so I can quickly move to another place and avoid being tainted by your bad luck!"
"To kill someone is to destroy their spirit." Aunt Li's words hurt Zhao's heart. She said her family was unlucky?!
Just as Zhao was about to say something, Chen Ping came out and said impatiently, "Mother, keep your voice down! Why are you arguing with someone again! Arou is hungry, go and cook!"
A burst of laughter came from outside the courtyard. Zhao couldn't catch her breath, her head was buzzing, and she collapsed.
Chen Ping ignored her and went straight back to his room. His mother kept complaining about back pain and leg numbness, but she was obviously faking it!
There are plenty of women in the village the same age as his mother, and they all work in the fields and on the mountains. His mother just wants to be lazy!
Aunt Li clicked her tongue and shook her head, quite an eye-opener. Although Zhao was hated, she had been completely devoted to Chen Ping. Yet, the son she had raised with such care just let her lie on the ground and didn't care at all.
Aunt Zhou sighed, "How cold-blooded! Zhao deserves it. This is what happens when you spoil a child. Look at Chen Gen and Chen Shu in their family, they're just like their father!"
Li Manying was so spoiled back then, she got whatever she wanted and never complained. Now she doesn't even recognize her mother. Last time I saw that kid Chen Gen pointing his finger at his mother and cursing her. The words he used were so filthy I can't even bring myself to say them.
Just watch, with Zhao in this state, Chen Ping won't fare much better in the future; his hard times are ahead!
Everyone present agreed that spoiling a child is not only like killing a child, but also harms oneself!
If a child is unkind to outsiders and selfish, how can you expect him to be filial to his parents and respect them? That's wishful thinking!
A tree that grows crooked is crooked; you can't say it's straight just because it doesn't look crooked from one angle!
Aunt Li waved her hand, "Let's go, let's go! Let's forget about them! Let's hurry over to Cheng Yue's house, we still need to gather herbs later!"
As they spoke, a large group of people headed straight up the mountain. They were busy, and who had time to deal with this oddball Zhao family!
As for Zhao, who was lying in the courtyard, they couldn't be bothered to care. She didn't even care about her own son, so why should they?
With that kind of attitude, they might just turn around and try to extort money from them!
Besides, this is what they call reaping what you sow, isn't that a sign of competence? Those who are foul-mouthed today and pick fights tomorrow, might as well put them out in the sun and let them get rid of their bad luck!
The sunlight was blinding, and Zhao Shi soon woke up slowly. There was no movement in Chen Gen's room, and Chen Ping was even more silent. Thinking about what had just happened, she felt extremely bitter.
She just couldn't understand why her beloved son and grandson would treat her like this. Did they not even care about her body after she died?
If I had known the eldest was so unreliable, I would have followed the second eldest! If I had followed the second eldest, she would be living the high life! She wouldn't have had to suffer like this!
Now, she truly regretted it...
