When Cheng Yue entered the courtyard, she expected it to be overgrown with weeds, but it was surprisingly clean and tidy, clearly having been specially tidied up.
There is also a plum tree and a jujube tree at the base of the wall.
There are three main rooms and one annex room on each side, all made of adobe. Although they are somewhat dilapidated, they are still much better than where we lived before.
The courtyard was large, surrounded by stone walls. Except for the lack of a well, it had chicken coops, pigsties, outhouses, vegetable gardens, and even tables and chairs. It was fully equipped with everything you needed.
She looked at Chen An and saw a smile on his face. No wonder he was so calm; it turned out he had planned this all along.
The Zhang brothers and Liu Chunlai helped tidy up, and in no time everything was put away.
"Brother Dashan, Brother Dajiang, Brother Chunlai, thank you so much for today. Don't rush off, I'll go make breakfast right away."
Seeing the three of them clapping their hands and preparing to go down the mountain, Cheng Yue quickly stopped them. They had been busy all morning, and she couldn't let them go without even a meal.
"Since your wife has brought it up, let's have a meal to celebrate your housewarming."
Zhang Dashan laughed heartily, "It's a new house, so it's good that they stay and add to the atmosphere."
The brothers sat in the yard talking, while Cheng Yue went to the kitchen to get busy. Da Ni and Er Ni wanted to come in too, but she sent them to tend the vegetable garden.
With people watching, how could she take things out of her spatial storage? Wouldn't that give her away?
There was an iron pot on the kitchen stove, which looked new. I wonder when Chen An got it. It's just that Zhao and the others haven't been here, otherwise they would have pried it off long ago.
There was a water tank, but it wasn't covered with a board. A layer of dust floated on the surface of the water, and various kinds of debris settled at the bottom.
This water is too wet to drink, but it's fine for watering vegetables.
There was running water in the room, and Cheng Yue quickly washed the pot and prepared to make breakfast.
With food supplies limited, she couldn't openly make anything good, especially with outsiders around.
After thinking for a moment, I could only mix coarse flour and wheat flour together to make some scallion pancakes.
Then I took out a few eggs from the space, stirred them, poured them into the pot of boiling water in a circle, thickened them with cornstarch, sprinkled on chopped green onions, and made a bowl of thick egg drop soup.
Cheng Yue brought the food to the table, then served Chen An a bowl separately. The leftovers in the pot were just enough for herself and the three children.
"There's not much food or vegetables right now, so I just made some. You can eat this to fill your stomachs. There aren't enough bowls and chopsticks, so you can just drink from the basin."
She only realized she didn't have enough bowls and chopsticks after she finished cooking. She didn't dare take out the porcelain bowls from her spatial storage, so she had to let everyone drink from the pots, which was a little embarrassing to admit.
Liu Chunlai and the Zhang brothers didn't hear what Cheng Yue said at all; they were already wide-eyed with astonishment at the food in front of them. "Sister-in-law, you're too generous!"
This pancake is so oily and juicy, the aroma alone is mouthwatering. And this egg drop soup is covered in eggs—I wonder how many eggs they used!
Even his own mother and wife wouldn't eat like this, so it's obvious that this is to nourish Chen An's body; they're all benefiting from their brother's generosity!
I felt a little embarrassed to eat it.
Seeing their reaction, Cheng Yue found it amusing. "You guys eat quickly. You've all been busy this morning. Let's have something nice to eat on the first day of moving, as a celebration."
Chen An looked at the things in his hands with a head full of questions. He didn't remember his mother distributing these good things.
Despite his suspicions, he couldn't say anything.
After Cheng Yue finished speaking, she called Chen Lin, Da Ni, and Er Ni to the kitchen to eat. The three children were engrossed in rummaging through the vegetable garden, and the food truly tasted better when they were at home.
Upon hearing this, Zhang Dashan and the other two stopped arguing and picked up the pancakes to eat with gusto. They were so delicious with all the oil and grease!
Another sip of egg drop soup, so satisfying! How did you make this soup? It's so rich and flavorful!
As the three ate, they exclaimed, "Chen An is such a lucky guy! How come we never noticed before!"
The group ate a piece of flatbread and sipped soup, and in no time they finished the entire bamboo steamer of flatbread and the egg drop soup.
This is only true when they're at someone else's house. If it were their own house, they would lick the egg drop soup off the bowl.
Liu Chun smacked his lips, savoring the taste, "Brother Chen An, your wife's cooking is really good, unlike my wife, everything she makes has a weird taste."
Chen An glared at him, "It's good enough that I can cook it for you, and you're still being picky. If you keep talking badly about your wife behind her back, you'll be starving."
Liu Chunlai scratched his head. Every time he complained about his wife, Chen An would scold him if he heard it.
Zhang Dashan raised his chin and smiled helplessly, "Don't pay attention to his nonsense. We have to go to the fields after we finish eating. Don't worry about your land, we brothers will take care of it for you. Focus on healing your injury first!"
Chen An smiled and didn't stand on ceremony, "Then thank you, brothers."
"Hey, don't be so polite! Don't put on airs."
When Cheng Yue heard that the person was leaving after finishing her meal, she quickly got up to see them off.
When Zhang Dajiang saw Cheng Yue come out, he grinned and greeted her:
"Sister-in-law, we're leaving now. If you need any help, just call us. If it's inconvenient, come find your sister-in-law!"
"Okay, I'll definitely need your help if anything comes up."
Cheng Yue smiled and replied, "Relationships are built through give and take."
She'll be living in the village from now on; if someone is nice, she'll build a relationship with them; if someone is mean, she'll drag them down!
"Don't be shy! Let's go!" The three of them stood up, waved casually, and pushed the cart down the mountain.
"Ah Yue, thank you."
Chen An liked Cheng Yue's straightforward personality now, thanked her for agreeing to separate the family, and also thanked her for taking care of his brothers.
Cheng Yue couldn't stand Chen An looking at her like that when he spoke. His bright black eyes were sincere and gentle, and his deep voice made it all seem strange.
"Um, would you like to come inside and lie down..."
Liu Chunlai and the others were outside, so Chen An didn't go inside.
"No need, let's sit outside, it's too stuffy inside."
Chen An didn't know what was wrong with Cheng Yue; every time he tried to speak to her properly, she would become evasive.
Moreover, he was still holding a bowl and hadn't even finished his meal, so why was he going to go inside and lie down?
After thinking for a moment, he put the bowl on the ground and said, "I'd better go inside and lie down for a while. Yue, can you help me up?"
How fickle this person is! He just said it was stuffy in the room, but now he doesn't feel stuffy anymore?
If she hadn't seen that he was a patient, she would have really lost her temper. Isn't this just making things difficult for him?
"Xiao Lin, your dad needs to go inside. Come out and help me help him!" How could she possibly lift Chen An, such a big guy, by herself?
Chen Lin wiped his mouth and came out: "Mom, I...I'm strong, I can do it myself."
Having left his grandmother and aunt, and having eaten such good food, Chen Lin felt like he had inexhaustible energy.
After the family separated, he was the only man besides his father, so naturally he had to prove his strength.
Cheng Yue nodded with satisfaction. He really was his good son!
Chen An: "..." For the first time, he realized that his son was indeed simple-minded.
"Never mind, I won't go inside. I'll just stay outside and soak up some sun. Xiaolin, come and take the dishes away and wash them."
Chen Lin didn't know what was going on, so he took the bowl and went into the kitchen.
Cheng Yue took a deep breath and put on a professional fake smile.
Let's just assume he's venting. I've heard that some people, when they're sick, like to torment others to make themselves feel better.
"Then you can sit here. I'll plant the seedlings first, so they won't wilt later."
The vegetable garden in the courtyard has plenty of vegetables, but they can't just be taken out of thin air; there has to be a reason.
After planting the vegetables, she still had to brew medicine for Chen An, and the room wasn't even cleaned. She had so many things to do; she didn't have time to argue with a patient.
Chen An knew he couldn't be of much help, and not wanting to say anything more, he simply said:
“Vegetables need watering. There’s a spring behind our house. It’s just a short walk uphill.”
He discovered this spring a few years ago when he came to dig for medicinal herbs, but no one lived here anymore, so he didn't mention it.
