Chapter 21 A pebble got in my eye

"Father, Mother, stop it! Can't you see that little sister is crying?" Life is hard, Cheng Yang sighed.

After saying that, he looked at Cheng Yue, flexed his fist, and said, "Little sister, did that family upset you? Tell your big brother, and I'll get revenge for you!"

They haven't visited for several years. When my younger sister goes back home for the Lunar New Year, she only reports good news and not bad. Now that her brother-in-law has injured his leg, they've actually separated from the family.

He immediately realized that his younger sister must have been wronged.

When Mr. Cheng saw his daughter crying, he was heartbroken. "Daughter, what's wrong? Did your son-in-law bully you?"

Ms. Wu then asked, "Did your mother-in-law upset you?"

Her son-in-law is considerate and wouldn't bully his daughter; it's good enough that his daughter doesn't bully him.

Seeing her parents and older brother looking anxious, Cheng Yue quickly wiped away her tears and said with a smile, "No, no one upset me. I'm just happy to see my parents and older brother."

Mr. Cheng breathed a sigh of relief and said, "That's good. We heard that you had separated from your family and moved here. We were worried that you were lacking everything, so we quickly bought a bunch of things over here."

Look, there are blankets and food. Your mother even specially cut several pounds of meat. See if there's anything else you need, and have your older brother go buy it..."

Listening to her father's rambling, and then looking at the patched clothes her family was wearing, Cheng Yue shrank back and said:

"Dad, we've already received our share, we don't need anything, so don't worry about us."

They themselves are living like this, yet they still think of her so much; buying this truckload of things must have cost them a lot of money.

There's such a big piece of pork; they probably wouldn't even want to eat it themselves...

Madam Wu sighed and said, "No parent is without worries, and having a daughter makes it even more worrying, unlike your eldest brother, whom we can see all the time."

You used to tell us not to come, and we were afraid of putting you in a difficult position, so we didn't dare to come. But if we didn't come, we would worry every day about whether you had eaten the things we brought..."

"Oh, Mom, let's go back and put our things down first. Let's not stand here any longer."

Cheng Yang was afraid that his parents would make Cheng Yue cry again, so he quickly interrupted them.

"Yes, Mom and Dad, let's go home first." Cheng Yue blinked, as if a pebble had gotten into her eyes...

Cheng Yue was sandwiched between her parents, the three of them walking in front, while Cheng Yang pushed the cart behind.

In the courtyard, Zhang Dashan and his brother Liu Chunlai were mixing mud, while Chen An sat to the side waiting for Cheng's parents to come in.

Cheng Yang had a loud voice; his shout probably told half the village that Cheng Yue's family had come. It was impossible for him not to hear it.

But he couldn't move and could only sit in the yard and wait.

Chen Lin, Da Ni, and Er Ni were also waiting in the courtyard. They had only met Cheng's parents a handful of times, and only knew that they had maternal grandparents and an uncle, so they were not very close to them.

The family entered the courtyard, and Chen An quickly called out, "Father, Mother, Eldest Brother."

Chen Lin, Da Ni, and Er Ni stood up straight and called out, "Grandma, Grandpa, Uncle!"

"Oh my goodness, Grandma! How did you get so thin? Grandma brought some meat. We'll give you lots of fatty meat for lunch!"

Ms. Wu felt both heartache and joy. She had only seen her grandchildren a few times, but she thought about them every day. Now that she had seen them, she felt that the children were too thin and weak, and she couldn't stop feeling sorry for them.

Dani smiled and said, "Thank you, Grandma! Grandma is so kind!"

Erni originally wanted to say that she had meat to eat, but Dani covered her mouth. Thinking about it again, it was better not to announce it loudly.

Cheng Yue thought to herself: The affection between grandparents and grandchildren is no joke. Just now, her mother poked her forehead, but now she's all smiles when she sees the child.

"What a good child! Here, Grandpa bought you some candy, take it."

Mr. Cheng was also upset. He took out a paper packet from his pocket, which contained only five pieces of candy.

He gave each of the children a piece, then turned to Cheng Yue and said, "Here, daughter, there are two more pieces. You and your son-in-law can each have one. They're very sweet, eat them quickly."

Cheng Yue felt terrible. Her father raised his hand, his sleeves were so torn they were unrecognizable. Sugar was so precious, they probably hadn't even tasted it themselves.

Just as Chen An was about to refuse, Cheng Yue quickly gave him a wink, took the candy, put it in her mouth, and smiled sweetly: "So sweet."

This was a sign of her parents' love for their child, and she didn't want to refuse. Anyway, there was plenty of candy at home, and she could just pack some more for her parents when they left.

Chen An understood Cheng Yue's meaning and put some in his mouth as well: "Thank you, Mom and Dad. Eating the candy has eased the bitterness in my mouth."

Mr. Cheng and Mrs. Wu felt both heartbroken and relieved. They thought about how that heartless Zhao must have mistreated their daughter's family, but they were relieved that they had finally separated and that there was still hope for the future, no matter how hard life was.

Chen Lin, Da Ni, and Er Ni quickly brought stools for their maternal grandparents and uncle to sit down. The three of them sat next to Chen An and asked him about his leg.

"The doctor said that I will get better if I take good care of myself. Parents, don't worry. Once I get better, I will start earning money as soon as possible and I will never let A-Yue and the children live a hard life."

When Chen An saw the fully loaded cart at the entrance, he understood perfectly well what was going on.

He rushed over as soon as he heard about their family splitting up, simply because he was worried that his daughter wasn't doing well. He definitely wanted to make a statement to reassure his parents-in-law.

Mr. Cheng nodded to Mrs. Wu and said, "If you're injured, take good care of yourself. Don't rush to earn money, lest you develop a chronic illness. Our whole family is here, and we can't let you go hungry."

Chen An was touched and sincerely said, "Thank you for your trouble, Father and Mother."

Madam Wu waved her hand dismissively, saying, "We're family, no need for formalities!"

After exchanging only a few words, Cheng Yang saw Zhang Dashan and the others repairing the roof and couldn't sit still any longer. "You guys sit down, I'll go help repair the roof!"

“I’ll go help too. Many hands make light work, the sooner we finish, the better!” Father Cheng took off his long gown to help as well.

"Father, please don't go. Sit down and rest." Cheng Yue and Chen An quickly stopped him. At his age, how could he go up to the roof?

"It's alright, let him go if he wants to. What's wrong with helping out with the mud? Your dad isn't some useless scholar; I've already trained him."

Ms. Wu said with a smile, her face full of pride.

"That's right!" Mr. Cheng snorted, then went to help, while Chen An, Cheng Yue, and their three children laughed.

Cheng's father was indeed a frail scholar in the past, but now he can easily slaughter pigs and carry goods.

With the addition of the Cheng family father and son, the roof repair progress has been significantly accelerated.

Cheng Yue thought it would be a good opportunity to make some he luo noodles while there were more people. With more people, their tastes would be different, and their opinions would be more valuable.

Wu wanted to go to the kitchen with Cheng Yue to help out, but Cheng Yue had to persuade her to sit down properly and had the three children keep her company.

However, Wu couldn't sit still. She untied the ropes and unloaded the things from the cart, and Chen Lin, Da Ni, and Er Ni followed along to move things.

When Ms. Wu entered the room and saw the new quilt in front of her, she could hardly believe her eyes. The colorful fabric looked expensive.

Da Ni told Wu that Chen An had secretly saved up money to buy them, and Wu took a while to nod in agreement.

Her son-in-law is quite shrewd; he knows how to take care of his own family, so she can rest assured.
