I followed the waiter to a counter filled with various styles of head jewelry.
Wang said, "This hairpin is really not suitable to be worn in the village. Just pick something nice but not too eye-catching."
Lin took a fancy to a jade hairpin in the shape of an orchid, which looked quite elegant, so she asked the waiter to take it out for her to look at.
Zhang said, "This hairpin is nice and suitable for you."
Lin put the hairpin on his head and tried it on. There happened to be a bronze mirror next to it. The more he looked at it, the more he liked it.
Wang said, "If you like it, buy it. You usually dress too plainly. Now that you are not needed to do any rough work at home, it's time to dress up."
Lin said happily, "Thank you, mother."
Wang said, "Waiter, we want this jade hairpin. Let's take a look at the others."
"Okay!" The waiter took the jade hairpin handed over by Lin and put it into a wooden box.
Zhang and Li also picked out a hairpin, which was also of a more novel style.
"Qibao, do you like this?" Wang took a fancy to a pair of hair accessories suitable for Qibao's age.
Qibao saw that it was a pair of butterflies made of silver, with their wings trembling slightly. There were a few jade stones dotted on them, and a few tassels hanging below, and under each tassel was a tear-shaped jade stone.
"Waiter, take this out and let me see it." The more Wang looked at it, the more she liked it.
The waiter said, "Madam, you have good taste! This style came from the capital, and many housekeepers like it. Your granddaughter is so pretty, she will look great in it."
As he was speaking, the waiter had already taken out the pair of hair accessories.
Wang took it, and the jade stones underneath made a pleasant sound when they collided.
Qibao likes it too.
Wang smiled and gestured on Qibao's head, saying, "It looks good and suits Qibao! I want it!"
The waiter smiled and said, "Although this pair is made of silver, the style is novel and the craftsmanship is quite complicated. Look at the jade inlaid on it. Although it is not large, they are all selected to be translucent and warm. Therefore, the price is higher. This pair will cost thirty taels."
Wang said proudly, "As long as my granddaughter likes it, I will buy it no matter how much it costs and pack it up!"
Qibao felt happy when he saw his grandmother being so confident. If it were the Xu family's situation in the past, they would have just hurried past the shop, let alone come in to pick out jewelry.
Wang also picked out a hairpin for Mrs. Qian and asked everyone to pick out a pair of earrings.
When we paid the bill, the total cost was over one hundred taels.
After Wang paid the money, Lin said, "Mother, I plan to pick out a hairpin for you too. I brought the money."
Wang smiled and said, "You choose. I'll pay the money. When the time comes, you can say that you paid for it yourself, otherwise your in-laws may refuse."
"Mom, I can do it myself. How can I ask you to pay? I have enough money." Lin said.
"Your parents are busy as hell at the winery every day. They're working for our Xu family. What's wrong with me spending a little money? Go pick some quickly. For the eldest son's family, for the second son's family, you guys go pick some nice ones for your in-laws too. I've brought enough money today!"
"Thank you, Mom!" The three of them looked happy.
"Aunt, you treat your daughter-in-law so well. There are so few good mothers-in-law like you! No wonder Sister Zhang and the others are so caring and filial to you." Mrs. Qian said.
"Hey! They are just like my own children. They raise their daughters, marry them into our family, do all the work, give birth to children, and take care of the elders. It's not easy. I also started as a daughter-in-law!"
Mrs. Qian nodded in agreement.
After everyone had chosen their items, they paid and left the jewelry shop.
I bought a lot of small things along the way. When it was almost time, I got on the carriage and prepared to go home.
As soon as the carriage stopped at the door of Xu's house, many women from the village surrounded them, carrying chickens and ducks they raised at home.
Wang was a little confused and asked, "What happened?"
"Aunt, I came here specially to thank Madam Qian. I heard from my daughter Huaer that Madam Qian would stay in the school to teach embroidery to the girls in the village. I was so happy to hear that. Everyone also knows about it. The farmers don't have much as before, so we took some poultry to Madam Qian to nourish her body as a token of our appreciation!" said Huaer's mother.
When Mrs. Qian heard that everyone was sending gifts because of her, she stepped forward and said, "Don't be polite, everyone. I can't accept these. You can just take them back and use them to nourish your children."
"How can that be? This embroidery is a skill that can earn you a living, and not everyone is willing to teach it. Madam Qian, just accept it! This way everyone will feel more at ease!"
"That's right! Madam Qian, please accept it! If you need any help in the future, just come to us and we will definitely not refuse!"
Wang also said, "Yue Ru, since it is a gift from everyone, you should accept it! Otherwise, they will feel uneasy."
Mrs. Qian could only say, "Okay, thank you all for your kindness, but this is indeed a bit too much. I'll just take two, and you can take the rest back and feed your own children!"
Hua'er's mother said, "How about this? Auntie doesn't have a place to raise the chickens and ducks we sent her. So we can stew them and take turns sending them over every day to give to Madam Qian and Young Master Qian as a supplement. What do you think?"
"Okay! I agree!"
"I'll go back and kill the chicken now, and send it over after it's stewed. I raised this chicken with my own hands, and it's time for it to repay me for raising it." A woman went home with a smile on her face, carrying a chicken, afraid that someone would get there first.
