Chapter 10 Chicken Coop

Seeing that Wu Lei was still reluctant to eat meat, Wei Yuyan had no choice but to bring up his aunt who was always trying to take advantage of him to scare him.

Wu Lei listened without saying anything, but he put a few more pieces of braised pork into his bowl, clearly having taken it to heart.

Wei Yuyan picked up a piece of pork belly with alternating layers of fat and lean meat and put it in her mouth.

Mmm~, it's rich but not greasy, melts in your mouth, and has a soft and chewy texture. It's so delicious that Wei Yuyan couldn't resist eating a bowl and a half of rice at noon.

As for the bowl full of pork belly, there was still a little bit left in the bowl, everyone was really full.

"I'll use this soup to make noodles for you guys tonight."

Wei Yuyan thought that making noodles would definitely be amazing.

"Sister-in-law, aren't we eating too well?"

When Wu Lei heard Wei Yuyan say this, he had to remind her that there wasn't much refined grain at home, and if they ate it every day, it would be gone in two months. They should eat a balanced diet.

"Xiao Lei, don't worry. The reason we were saving money before was because the yield in the fields was too low. Your sister-in-law has a way to increase the yield in the fields."

Also, I went to inquire about our medicinal herbs today, and they're worth quite a bit of money. Once they're sold, my sister-in-law will cook you some pork belly for you."

Wei Yuyan knew that Xiao Lei was different from Qianqian; he was actually quite perceptive.

What needs to be made clear to Xiaolei should be made clear.

"Okay, I'll do as my sister-in-law says, I'll go wash the dishes."

Wu Lei quickly cleared away the dishes. This time, Wei Yuyan didn't try to take them from him because she was indeed a bit tired today.

"Xiao Lei, this is a brass lock that your sister-in-law bought today. From now on, lock the front door when you go out. Here's the key; I don't have another one."

Actually, there were three keys. Wei Yuyan wanted to hide one key outside the yard, just in case she forgot to bring it one day.

"good".

Wu Lei hung the lock behind the door, locked it, and kept the key close to his body.

Wei Yuyan hadn't rested at all since she got up this morning. She washed her face with water and then lay down on the bed to sleep.

Wu Qian was too full to sleep, so while her brother was washing dishes, she sneaked into her sister-in-law's room to peek at her sleeping.

"Sister-in-law, why aren't you covered with a blanket?"

Wu Qian, acting like a little adult, helped Wei Yuyan cover herself with the blanket that had fallen off before leaving.

"Qianqian, why haven't you gone to rest yet?"

Wu Lei finished washing the dishes and caught Wu Qian, who wasn't sleeping, red-handed.

"Shh, second brother, sister-in-law is asleep. I'm covering her with a blanket."

Wu Qian shushed her and then ran to her room.

"Little rascal".

Wu Lei couldn't help but smile, glanced at his sister-in-law's room again, and then went to coax his younger sister to take a nap.

Wei Yuyan woke up naturally, and it was already late afternoon.

"Oh dear, there's no time to build the chicken coop today."

Wei Yuyan didn't expect herself to have become so lazy. She had slept for so long, and now she had to cut bamboo and build a fence around it. She was afraid she wouldn't have enough time.

"Get up and wash your face first," Wei Yuyan said, feeling refreshed and invigorated after washing her face.

"Sister-in-law, we're back from cutting bamboo."

Wu Qian's soft voice came from the courtyard gate, and Wei Yuyan quickly came out.

Goodness, these two little guys actually went to cut bamboo.

Wu Qian was dragging a long bamboo pole, while Wu Lei was dragging two bamboo poles.

"Why didn't you two invite your sister-in-law to come with you? You can't do this again, you know? You're still young, you don't need to do so much."

Wei Yuyan felt both helpless and heartbroken; how could these two children be so well-behaved?

"My brother said that my sister-in-law is tired today and should sleep a little longer."

Seeing that her sister-in-law didn't seem happy, Wu Qian quickly explained.

"Sister-in-law is tired today, but you can work around the chicken coop tomorrow."

Don't do too much heavy work in the future, do you hear me, Wu Lei? If you do too much heavy work, you won't grow tall.

Wei Yuyan's words were a bit harsh, but if she hadn't said that, Wu Lei would still have gone to do the heavy work next time.

"I understand, sister-in-law."

Wu Lei lowered his head in silence, like a child who had made a mistake.

"Take my sister to wash her hands, I'll tend the chicken coop."

Wei Yuyan felt she needed to establish her authority, so she took the machete from Wu Lei and started chopping bamboo.

The chicken coop is right next to the kitchen, where it's warm. Chickens are very sensitive to the cold, as it can make them sick. Luckily, there are two walls in the kitchen that block the wind.

Bamboo is split into strips about two fingers wide, and then some thinner strips, about the thickness of chopsticks, are shaved to hold the strips in place, and then woven together like a fishing net.

I wove two pieces, one stuck in the mud and the other covering it, but the bamboo netting wasn't enough to keep out the wind and rain.

Wei Yuyan found a large bunch of thatch in the kitchen, which was left over from the previous roof repairs.

Now it's perfect to weave a thick layer of thatch to cover the chicken coop and line the inside.

Now they won't be afraid of the cold. The weather isn't very good now, but there's not much cold wind.

"Wow, the chicks' home is so comfortable. Little chicks, your home is all set up."

Qianqian brought the chicken coop over.

"Sister-in-law, come and release it."

Wei Yuyan took it, opened the chicken coop, and the eight chicks quickly ran out for a stroll.

Wei Yuyan thought that they could run around in the yard in the future, since there was a wall around them anyway.

"Sister-in-law, the chicks seem hungry."

Qianqian pointed to the chicks eating grass.

"I'll go cook the chicken feed, Xiao Lei, come and learn how."

Wei Yuyan called out to Wu Lei, and the silent Wu Lei quickly followed.

"The chicks like to eat green vegetables, so we'll come to the vegetable garden every day to see which vegetables are plentiful. If we can't finish them, we'll cook them for the chicks."

Look, there are a lot of bok choy and white radish here. Let's cook this for them today.

The chicks couldn't eat much, so Wei Yuyan only picked a white radish and a bok choy.

I taught Wu Lei to finely chop the vegetables and add them to the water from the pot where he cooked the rice at noon. There were still some rice grains in the water. Just cook the vegetables until they are done.

"Once it's cooked, don't pour it in immediately. The chicks are just like us; they're afraid of getting burned. Once it's no longer too hot, then pour it in. From now on, this bowl will be exclusively for the chicks to eat from now on."

Wei Yuyan found a broken bowl in the corner of the kitchen.

"Understood, sister-in-law."

Wu Lei scooped out the chicken feed and let it cool down. It was just a bowlful, and he felt the chicks wouldn't be able to finish it.

"Xiao Lei, what your sister-in-law just said wasn't meant to blame you. She knows you wanted to help me share the burden."

But you and your sister are at a crucial stage of growth. Doing such heavy work will affect your height and your sister's appearance. Do you want that?

My sister-in-law hopes that you can help your younger sister with some light tasks in the future, such as cooking chicken feed, sweeping the floor, and washing dishes.

Cutting bamboo is too dangerous. Wait two years, when you've grown taller and stronger.

"The heavy chores at home will be handed over to you. You can do them then."

Wei Yuyan could tell that Wu Lei was unhappy, so she patiently explained again why she was angry.

"Sister-in-law, I understand. I'm still young, so I should do lighter work. I'll help you out when I'm older in a couple of years."
