Chapter 12 A Fish

They found quite a few more around them, and Wei Yuyan searched for almost an hour before stopping.

The basket was filled with a good harvest, but the dendrobium was quite light, probably only a little over a pound.

It was lunchtime, so Wei Yuyan returned to the spring where they had been. The two children seemed to be watching the fish swimming around in the water.

"Xiao Lei, what are you looking at? Are there any fish?"

Wei Yuyan put down the basket.

"Sister-in-law, there's a fish! It's huge! Come and see!"

Wu Lei excitedly pointed into the water, as if he really wanted to jump in and catch it.

"Let me see, oh my, it really is."

Wei Yuyan leaned into the water to take a look, and exclaimed, "Wow, this fish must weigh three or four pounds!"

It seems like it's been a long time since I've eaten fish, but I don't have the ingredients...

“I have an idea, Xiao Lei, bring out a steamed bun.”

Wei Yuyan poured out the dendrobium and ginseng from the basket, then tore off a small piece of steamed bun and scattered it into the basket.

Slowly lower the basket into the water.

"Alright, just leave it like that. You two can keep an eye on it. If any fish swim by, call me quietly. Don't shout or you'll scare the fish away."

Wei Yuyan was surprised to find fish in the spring, and there were quite a few of them.

After giving instructions to the two children, Wei Yuyan went to get some water and rest. There were still several hours left in the afternoon, so she should take a break.

I took some steamed buns and ate with them. And I must say, even ordinary steamed buns tasted quite delicious up in the mountains.

"Sister-in-law, the fish is here."

Wu Lei controlled his voice as he ran over, but his excitement was undeniable.

Upon hearing this, Wei Yuyan quickly went over and looked around. Sure enough, the biggest fish had arrived.

The big fish lingered at the entrance of the basket for a moment, then darted inside and began eating pieces of steamed bun. It ate very quickly.

Wei Yuyan scooped up the basket in one swift motion.

The fish were also thrown up and were jumping around on the grass.

"Wow, we caught it! Sister-in-law is amazing!"

Wu Qian was gesturing wildly beside her.

"But how are we going to bring the fish back? It's so far, won't the fish die?"

Wu Lei looked around, but there was nothing he could use to hold the fish.

"Oh yeah, it looks like we won't be able to eat this fish fresh."

Wei Yuyan couldn't think of a good solution either, so she found some vines and planned to take the fish home later.

Let's just make this fish into dried fish.

“It’s almost 1 p.m. Let’s keep going and collect the materials for about an hour before heading home. We’ll split into two groups now.”

Wei Yuyan found some large leaves and used twigs to make a simple basket, which she gave to the two of them, because she knew they couldn't out-dig as well as Wei Yuyan.

"Next time we'll bring two baskets."

Wu Lei was very confident; he felt he could dig up a lot of medicinal herbs today.

"Okay, be careful, don't go too far, you can't walk in unfamiliar places, understand?"

The village children are familiar with this mountain forest; they won't get lost unless they go deep into the mountains.

"Okay, sister-in-law, see you in a bit."

Wu Lei pulled Wu Qian away; he couldn't resist showing off his skills.

Wei Yuyan threaded the fish onto a rope and tied it to her basket, which already contained some medicinal herbs.

She felt that if she went to dig on two sides today, she could definitely fill a basket with medicinal herbs.

An hour and a half passed quickly, and Wei Yuyan's hair was covered with leaves.

However, the harvest was plentiful; the basket was already three-fifths full of medicinal herbs, and it was quite heavy, weighing about ten pounds.

It's probably not a good time to dig for Panax notoginseng this month; the area we've been digging for these past few days is quite large.

If they want to dig any further, they'll have to go deep into the mountains, where there seem to be wild animals, and Wei Yuyan will have to go alone.

"Sister-in-law, you're back."

Before Wei Yuyan even reached the spring, Wu Qian skipped over.

"Hmm, you guys got back even earlier than me. Did you have a good haul?"

Wei Yuyan smiled and took Wu Qian's hand.

"Sister-in-law, you'll see when you get there," Wu Lei said, keeping everyone in suspense.

"Wow, so much! It's just as much as my sister-in-law's! That's amazing! I promise you, once the herbs are sold, I'll buy you snacks."

Wei Yuyan looked at the small basket of Panax notoginseng on the ground with some surprise. The two children's fighting power was much stronger than she had imagined.

"Yay!"

Wu Qian clapped her hands happily, while Wu Lei carefully placed the Panax notoginseng into Wei Yuyan's basket, making it a full basket now.

However, the leaves are covered in mud, so after drying, they only weigh about three pounds.

"Let's go home, let's go home and I'll make you some bone broth. Drink it and you'll become plump and healthy."

Wei Yuyan forgot about the bone broth this morning; otherwise, she could have made it in the morning and drunk it directly when she got home in the evening.

"Bone broth?"

The two children were a little confused. All they could remember was drinking meat broth. Could bone broth possibly taste good?

It took the three of them half an hour to get home.

"I'll open the door."

Wu Lei showed no signs of fatigue as he ran over to open the door. Now that there's a lock, even opening the door has become a fun thing.

"Xiao Lei, come here, let your sister-in-law teach you how to clean Panax notoginseng and Dendrobium."

Just gently wash away the mud, without rubbing it too hard.

Then wipe it lightly with this dry gauze and put it on a winnowing basket to dry.

Wei Yuyan was going to make a big bone soup, so she had to ask Wu Lei and Wu Qian to help her wash the Panax notoginseng first.

Luckily, we have plenty of winnowing baskets at home, otherwise we wouldn't have enough to dry, as we have a lot of Panax notoginseng.

After giving her instructions, Wei Yuyan took the dead fish to the kitchen. She couldn't skip eating the pig liver today; not having a refrigerator was a real hassle.

Wei Yuyan first went to the vegetable garden and picked chili peppers, scallions, carrots, and white radishes.

Wash the large bones thoroughly and blanch them in boiling water first, otherwise there will be scum.

After blanching, add ginger slices and simmer over low heat. Wash and cut the red and white radishes and set aside.

In the evening, we had bone broth and stir-fried pork liver with chili peppers. Our staple food was steamed buns from the morning.

My child can't handle too much spice, only mild spice.

When I went out to wash the Panax notoginseng, I found that the children had completed their task quite well.

"Xiao Lei, have you ever eaten pig liver?"

Wei Yuyan thought for a moment and asked Wu Lei if they didn't like it, so she wouldn't buy it anymore.

No.

Wu Lei shook his head; he didn't even know what pig liver was.

"Let's try it later to see if it tastes good. It's good for your health."

Pig liver is good for replenishing iron and nourishing blood and qi.

"Okay~".

Wu Lei nodded and began to wash the Panax notoginseng carefully again. Wei Yuyan also washed it together. Half an hour later, all the herbs were clean.

Wei Yuyan took seven or eight dendrobium orchids and put them into the bone broth along with radishes. She simmered them for another half hour before they were ready to serve.

The children were sweeping the yard outside, cleaning up the weeds and mud.

"Xiao Lei, have some water and rest with your sister. Dinner will be ready soon."

Seeing that the two children were exhausted, Wei Yuyan told them to rest and then went to clean the fish.
