Chapter 125 Paying Wages

Qianqian and Wei Yuyan parted ways at the fork in the road.

Wei Yuyan brought the red bean paste to Sister Xiuhua's door, only to find that the door was not yet open.

"Is he still asleep?"

Wei Yuyan reached out and gently knocked on the door twice.

"They've arrived."

Xiuhua's sister-in-law's voice came, and soon the door was opened.

"Sister-in-law, come in and sit down. I'm doing laundry."

Sister-in-law Xiuhua pointed to the clothes next to the well, which were almost washed and ready to be hung up to dry.

"Where is Brother Zhang?"

Wei Yuyan did not see Brother Zhang.

"He was picking vegetables in the garden. He said he wanted to eat water spinach tonight, so he went to pick some. Is there something you need from him?"

Xiuhua's sister-in-law carried the washed clothes to the bamboo pole and hoe, preparing to hang them up to dry.

"This is red bean paste I brought for you. Sister Xiuhua, please chill it in the well. To be precise, I have something to discuss with you two. No rush, wait until you're done."

Wei Yuyan put the red bean paste down.

"good".

Sister-in-law Xiuhua first lowered the red bean paste into the well, then called out from the backyard before returning to continue hanging up the clothes.

"Sister-in-law is here, what's up?"

Brother Zhang looked completely bewildered.

"Close the door."

Wei Yuyan got up and closed the door.

"What's going on? Why are you being so mysterious?"

Xiuhua's sister-in-law quickly came over.

"Brother Zhang, Sister-in-law Xiuhua, after careful consideration, I'm going to rent a shop in town in the next couple of days."

Wei Yuyan considered many options, but renting a shop was still the most convenient and reliable.

"Okay, since you've made up your mind, we'll help you find a shop."

Xiuhua's sister-in-law felt that her sister-in-law's decision was definitely correct.

"Where would you like to rent?"

Brother Zhang was concerned about whether the rent was too expensive.

"I think we shouldn't rent in the wet market, the shops there are too expensive, let's just rent on the street."

Then my idea was that the three of us would sell steamed buns, and the two of you could still set up your own stalls.

I sell in the shop, which definitely has a backyard where the kids sleep. That way, I don't have to get up early, which is a win-win situation.

Wei Yuyan is currently unaware of the market rates for renting shops in town, and dares not rent an expensive one.

"That's a good idea, but what if someone steals things from the house? What if others know we're not home all the time?"

Sister-in-law Xiuhua did consider this aspect.

"That's true, I hadn't even thought of that."

Wei Yuyan immediately deflated. Although there was a wall around the house, if a thief wanted to, he could easily get in with a ladder.

Then the family's food, money, and chickens would suffer.

"This is a real problem."

Brother Zhang pondered.

"Forget it, fortune favors the bold. If the thief comes, there's nothing we can do."

The only way is to hide the valuables well; once the dogs grow up, we won't have to worry anymore.

Wei Yuyan couldn't think of any other way, so she could only hide her things before going out in the future to prevent thieves from visiting.

"Yes, what other options are there? We just have to deal with whatever comes our way."

Brother Zhang nodded.

"Let's leave it at that for now. Maybe we can come up with another solution later. Brother Zhang, here's this month's wages. Count them."

Wei Yuyan felt overwhelmed and handed the money bag to Brother Zhang.

"Why is there so much? Sister-in-law, we agreed it would only cost three coins."

Brother Zhang opened the money bag and saw that there were four strings of coins.

“My wages will vary every month, but I promise that they will only increase in the future. You have helped me a lot.”

Wei Yuyan always felt that she hadn't given enough, while Brother Zhang and his wife felt that they had gotten a great deal.

I ate so many meals at my younger brother and sister-in-law's house and still received so much money.

"Brother Zhang, I have a good idea."

Wei Yuyan suddenly slapped her thigh.

"Huh, what's a good idea?"

Xiuhua's sister-in-law was curious.

"The day before Brother Zhang goes to the market, he doesn't need to sleep in town with us; he sleeps at home."

My family has a dog. If a thief comes and the dog barks, Brother Zhang will definitely be able to hear it.

In the morning, as dawn broke, Brother Zhang drove his oxcart to town to set up a stall with Sister-in-law Xiuhua.

Wei Yuyan's house was only a few houses away from Xiuhua's, and the two dogs could still be heard barking.

"Yes, that's a good idea. Plus, I can occasionally sleep in Xiao Lei's room. If a thief wants to know which day we're not home, he won't know."

Brother Zhang thought this method was feasible.

"Okay, then it's settled. We'll go to town to check out the shops tomorrow or the day after."

Wei Yuyan solved the problem and was fully recovered.

"Let's go tomorrow. If we check it out early, we can use it in a couple of days."

Brother Zhang went into the kitchen, poured out a few bowls of water, and came out to drink.

"How about this, we'll go after breakfast tomorrow. If we go too early, they might not be awake yet."

After Wei Yuyan finished speaking, she prepared to get up and leave.

"Alright, alright, sister-in-law, why are you leaving? Come eat at my house, you're already here."

Xiuhua's sister-in-law wouldn't let go of Wei Yuyan.

"No way, your family didn't buy any meat today, I'm not coming."

Wei Yuyan smiled mischievously.

"Alright, okay then. I'll go buy meat tomorrow, and you can come to my house for dinner tomorrow."

Sister-in-law Xiuhua was overjoyed, as her husband only earned a little over two hundred coins a month outside.

Now I'm working with my younger siblings, even though I'm busy myself.

But it's not physical work, it's not tiring, and the pay is good, I couldn't be happier.

"No problem, I'm leaving."

Wei Yuyan left Xiuhua's house but didn't go home immediately. She wanted to see what the two naughty children were up to.

"Qianqian~".

After searching around, I couldn't find Xiao Lei, but I did find Qianqian.

"Sister-in-law, what brings you here? Shh, I'm playing hide-and-seek."

Qianqian hid behind the woodpile.

"Qianqian, I've found you. Hello, Sister-in-law Wu."

Xiaoya appeared out from behind without anyone noticing, and the two children burst into laughter.

"Hey Xiaoya, are you guys still playing? Your sister-in-law is going home first."

Wei Yuyan saw that Qianqian was having so much fun, she definitely didn't want to go home.

"Sister-in-law, you should go back first. I want to play with Sister Xiaoya for a while longer."

Qianqian was sweating profusely from playing, but she didn't feel tired at all.

Goodbye, Sister-in-law Wu.

Xiaoya and Qianqian walked away hand in hand, while Wei Yuyan went home alone.

Back home, Wei Yuyan couldn't wait to take out the chilled red bean paste and taste it.

"Mmm, it tastes really good."

It has a smooth, sweet, and refreshing taste. Wei Yuyan drank a small bowl and then dared not drink any more.

Drinking too much of this is bad for the spleen and stomach; the children were only given a small bowl.

The next morning, Wei Yuyan cooked a pot of green bean porridge and made a few scallion pancakes. The porridge was too hot, so she ladled it out to cool down before drinking it.

Wei Yuyan went into the room and took out the money box.

Not knowing how much money to bring, I took a five-qian silver coin, thinking it should be enough.

This era is different from modern times, where there's no such thing as a deposit and payment. I heard that you don't need a deposit to rent a house or shop here.
