Aunt Zhang put down her chopsticks and chatted with Wei Yuyan.
“Really? That’s great. Let’s go to the school together in a few days to pay the tuition fees to the children.”
Wei Yuyan thought that the children would have company now and wouldn't be lonely at school.
"Okay, by the way, Xiuhua said your fabric is cheap, I'd like to buy some with Xiuhua tomorrow."
I wonder if they're sold out yet. They're so cheap, I wonder if they'll all be gone by now.
Thinking that the fabric was so cheap, two outfits would cost the same as a regular set of clothes, Sister-in-law Zhang wanted to make a set of clothes for each of her two children.
"I don't think so. I saw six today. I was the only one buying them. I didn't see anyone else buying them. You should go earlier tomorrow."
Wei Yuyan thought that they probably hadn't sold out yet, and some people wouldn't buy them even if they saw that the stains couldn't be washed off.
"Sister-in-law, you must teach us how to wash it, because I'm afraid I won't be able to get it off."
As she spoke, Sister-in-law Xiuhua cleared the table of dishes and chopsticks.
"It's simple, just smear it with lard, then soak it in wood ash water and wash it off."
Wei Yuyan was giving instructions.
"By the way, sister-in-law, there's something you don't know yet."
Suddenly, Sister-in-law Zhang came over mysteriously.
"What's up?".
Wei Yuyan thought to herself, "You haven't even said what it is, how can I say I know?"
"Xiaoya's grandmother is seriously ill."
Sister-in-law Zhang said in a low voice.
"Oh? He's seriously ill? He was full of energy before, and last time we even had a doctor come and he got some medicine."
Wei Yuyan was somewhat surprised. She had heard Qianqian say that Xiaoya was still taking care of her grandmother, but she didn't expect it to be this serious.
"Who knows? I heard that Xiaoya saw her grandmother vomiting blood and asked Doctor Qian to take a look."
Dr. Qian said it was tuberculosis, and there was no cure. He probably wouldn't make it through next month.
Sister-in-law Zhang was gossiping.
"What about Xiaoya?"
Wei Yuyan frowned, wondering what to do about Xiaoya.
"She will probably rent out her family's land to others to farm, and the rent will be enough for her to live on."
Sister-in-law Zhang guessed.
"...Qianqian, did you see Xiaoya today?"
Wei Yuyan asked Qianqian.
"No, I went to her house to find her, but she said she didn't have time to play with me, so I went to play with my brother instead."
Qianqian thought for a moment before answering.
"Okay, sister-in-law understands."
Wei Yuyan thought for a moment and decided to go visit Xiaoya's house tomorrow.
The next morning~
Wei Yuyan brought two jin of flour and arrived at Xiaoya's door with Qianqian.
"Xiaoya~"
Qianqian called out.
"Sigh~"
Xiaoya came out, and she didn't look well.
"Xiaoya, let's come and see Grandma."
Wei Yuyan also came in.
"Sister-in-law, Grandma is inside."
Xiaoya led Wei Yuyan into the house.
Wei Yuyan went in and saw Grandma Xiaoya lying on the bed with a pale face. She had lost a lot of weight in the month she hadn't seen her.
"Auntie~".
Seeing that Grandma Xiaoya's eyes were closed, Wei Yuyan gently called out to her.
"Yes, she's Wu Chen's wife."
Grandma Xiaoya opened her eyes, looked at Wei Yuyan, and then spoke.
"Yes, I heard you haven't been feeling well lately, so I came to see you. Xiaoya, here's some flour."
Do you know how to make noodles? If not, I'll teach you in a bit.
Wei Yuyan thought that since Xiaoya's grandmother was so ill, Xiaoya must be cooking for herself every day.
"I won't".
Xiaoya shook her head. She was not even ten years old this year. She knew how to cook simple porridge, rice, and fried rice.
"Why bother spending money, cough cough~".
Grandma Xiaoya coughed heavily twice.
"Xiaoya, have you had breakfast? If not, go make some. I'm going to chat with your grandma. Qianqian, go and join Xiaoya."
After the two children left, Wei Yuyan took out a clean handkerchief and wiped away the bloodstains from the corner of Xiaoya's grandmother's mouth.
"Sigh, I really want to die sooner. Living is also a kind of pain. But my Xiaoya, she has such a hard life."
Grandma Xiaoya's tears fell as she spoke.
"Auntie, don't think like that. Xiaoya is a big girl now. Look, she can do her own laundry and cook for herself."
Wei Yuyan comforted her.
"Wu Chen's wife, I beg you, after I pass away, please take care of Xiao Ya for me, okay? cough cough cough."
Grandma Xiaoya looked at Wei Yuyan with tears in her eyes. She knew Wei Yuyan was a good person, otherwise she wouldn't have accepted her mushrooms and come to see her.
"I will, I will take care of Xiaoya."
Wei Yuyan nodded. Even if Xiaoya's grandmother didn't say anything, she would still take care of Xiaoya.
"I think that as long as I'm alive, Xiaoya will at least have someone to rely on. Otherwise, I would have given up on life long ago."
Grandma Xiaoya has been suffering from illness for some time. If it weren't for Xiaoya, she wouldn't want to live anymore.
"Auntie, please don't think too much about it. It's not as exaggerated as you say. If you try to cheer up, things might get better."
Seeing Grandma Xiaoya's condition, Wei Yuyan knew that her days were numbered.
However, she still wanted to encourage Grandma Xiaoya to live a little longer.
"Yes, you're right, cough cough cough."
Grandma Xiaoya coughed violently again, and Wei Yuyan went over to pat her back.
"Grandma, your medicine is ready."
Xiaoya brought over a bowl of medicine, and Wei Yuyan came out when she saw it.
Arriving at Xiaoya's kitchen, she prepared to cook a meal for Xiaoya, which would be tomato and egg noodles.
"Qianqian, go home and get some eggs."
Wei Yuyan couldn't find any eggs in Xiaoya's kitchen, guessing that they might have been eaten or sold.
