Chapter 17 Seed Selection

"Sister-in-law, it's too hard for you to carry so many clothes. We'll go with you."

The weather is still warm enough to wear a jacket, and the three of them have quite a few layers of clothing. Wu Lei quickly took a bucket from them.

"Okay, then let's go with sister-in-law. Qianqian, lock the door."

Wei Yuyan took off the lock and handed it to Wu Qian.

"Watch me!"

Wu Qian wasn't tall enough, so she had to stand on tiptoe to lock it properly.

"Qianqian needs to eat more so she can grow taller."

Wei Yuyan smiled and patted Wu Qian's head.

"Okay, sister-in-law."

The three of them slowly walked towards the river. At this time of day, everyone had gone home to cook, and no one was washing clothes by the river.

Wei Yuyan felt great washing clothes all by herself.

Wei Yuyan patted and pounded her coat, while Wu Lei helped wash some socks.

Wu Qian is playing with throwing stones.

"Xiao Lei, where did we put our grain seeds? I've completely forgotten."

Wei Yuyan felt that there were still some things she couldn't remember, and it would be more reliable to ask Xiao Lei.

"Isn't it placed on the roof beam in the kitchen? You said it wouldn't be afraid of mice up there."

Wu Lei remembers clearly that his sister-in-law hung it up herself last year.

"Oh, look at my memory, it's getting worse and worse. We should also dry it when we get back. My sister-in-law is planning to plant two rice crops this year."

Wei Yuyan and Xiao Lei were talking.

"Two seasons? How do you plant that?"

Xiao Lei looked at Wei Yuyan with a puzzled expression.

"We don't plant for the twelve months of the year, except for the winter months."

Next month we'll start raising seedlings, and once they're grown, we'll transplant them. We'll harvest them around July, and the day after harvesting, we'll transplant them again, and harvest them again in October.

Wei Yuyan patiently explained to Wu Lei that a growth period of about three months is generally sufficient for rice.

"Is this really okay?"

Wu Lei has never seen anyone else do this before, so he doesn't know if it will be successful.

"Yes, don't worry. I heard it from someone in town; someone has successfully grown it."

Wei Yuyan knew that Wu Lei was not easy to fool, so she still had to come up with a good excuse.

"Hmm, does that mean we can eat rice every day from now on?"

Wu Lei was also pleased to hear this.

"That's right~".

Wei Yuyan was still very confident.

I finished washing almost all the clothes, and it took me half an hour to get home, mainly because I didn't have any laundry detergent.

They use soapberry and wood ash, pounding and washing for so long to get it clean.

"What would you like to eat for lunch? How about eggs?"

Wei Yuyan thought that since she had already bought the eggs, she might as well fry a few eggs for lunch.

"Okay, I haven't eaten any eggs this year."

Wu Qian thought for a moment and realized that the last time she ate eggs was on her birthday last year.

"It's only February now."

Wu Lei glanced at Wu Qian, thinking, "What a fool."

"From now on, we'll be able to eat eggs every month. My sister-in-law will buy them often, and we'll eat them every few days."

Wei Yuyan hung the clothes up neatly.

"Sister-in-law, let me do it, you go and rest for a bit."

Wu Leiye helped hang up the remaining clothes; there weren't many left.

"Okay, I'll go pick some chili peppers. We'll have chili pepper and egg stir-fry for lunch."

I had pumpkin porridge today, and steamed egg custard wasn't suitable either. Stir-fried chili peppers are more suitable to go with porridge.

Wu Lei and Wu Qian swallowed hard.

Wei Yuyan went to the vegetable garden and picked a handful of green and red peppers. After washing them, she chopped them into small pieces. Peppers won't absorb the flavor if they're not chopped, and half-cooked peppers are even spicier.

I cracked three eggs and scrambled them. Then I heated oil in a pan. I used a lot of lard today, and eggs absorb oil very well.

The eggs were fried until fluffy, and even three eggs yielded quite a lot.

Sauté chili peppers, ginger, and garlic until fragrant and cooked through. Then pour in the eggs, add salt, stir-fry evenly, and it's ready to serve.

Just heat up the pumpkin porridge in the morning, and you're ready to eat.

"Scrambled eggs, eat more. I bought fifteen eggs today. If you finish them, I'll buy more, sister-in-law."

Wei Yuyan also picked up a piece of egg with her chopsticks and put it in her mouth. Mmm, it was fragrant and spicy.

"It's delicious."

Wu Qian chewed the egg in her mouth with satisfaction. It was a little spicy, but the more she ate, the more she wanted to eat.

"Chili peppers are delicious too."

Wu Lei picked up a piece of chili pepper with his chopsticks.

"You're free to do whatever you want this afternoon, whether you want to sleep or go out and play."

Wei Yuyan ate a big bite of pumpkin, thinking that she could cook sweet potato porridge tomorrow.

"So, sister-in-law, are you sleeping or what?"

Wu Qian asked curiously.

"Sister-in-law needs to go to sleep first, then she can choose the grain seeds."

Wei Yuyan felt that she had gotten used to taking a midday nap and felt uncomfortable if she didn't rest for a while.

"Then I'll go to sleep too."

Wu Qian just wanted to follow her sister-in-law wherever she went.

After finishing her meal, Wei Yuyan stretched. Wu Lei went to wash the dishes, and she went to check on the chicks.

Eight chicks are lazily sunbathing, and they all look to be in great spirits.

There was still some uneaten food in the bowl, and Wei Yuyan felt it was a waste to feed them cornmeal.

It's better to eat rice bran, but I don't know where to find it.

I went to check on the medicinal herbs again. They were drying quite well. With this good weather, they should be ready to be harvested in about a week.

Because medicinal herbs cannot be dried too much; maintaining at least 20% moisture content is ideal.

Wei Yuyan returned to her room to continue reading, and discovered something interesting today.

Wu Chen also wrote some words in the book, that is, he wrote down some of his own thoughts and opinions on the military treatise.

His handwriting was bold and beautiful. Wei Yuyan was a little puzzled. His family was so poor, how could he know how to write?

After reading for a while, Wei Yuyan fell asleep. She was woken up again by Wu Qian.

"Sister-in-law, sister-in-law, weren't you supposed to be choosing seeds? Why are you sleeping?"

Wu Qian got up and found her sister-in-law was still sleeping, so she came in and shook Wei Yuyan awake.

"Oh, I overslept again. Oh dear, I should get up. I didn't get any seeds dried today."

Wei Yuyan felt full of energy. After getting up and washing her face, she used a stick to take the basket down from the roof beam.

Sure enough, there was a bag of millet inside, wrapped in a cloth bag.

Wei Yuyan brought over a winnowing basket and a bowl, poured out all the millet, and began to pick out some of the less plump grains.

Pick them out and put them in a bowl; they'll be perfect for the chicks to eat tomorrow.

"Where is my brother?"

Wei Yuyan didn't see Wu Lei's voice, so she asked a question.

My brother said he went to steal bird eggs with the monkey.

Monkey is also a child in the village, two years older than Wu Lei. He is very thin and his nickname is Monkey.

Why don't you go?

Wei Yuyan looked at Wu Qian with amusement.

"He won't take me with him."

Wu Qian pouted. Wu Lei didn't want to take her along because he thought she couldn't climb trees.

"What about your girlfriends? Why don't you go hang out with them?"

Wei Yuyan encourages children to go out and play with their friends. Staying cooped up at home all day can lead to introverted personalities, which is not good.

"They stay at home embroidering handkerchiefs, don't go out to play much, and are unwilling to take me out to play."

Wu Qian spoke calmly, even though she had been wearing dirty clothes and had messy hair.
