Unexpectedly, Wei Yuyan's words struck a chord with Aunt Guihua.
She couldn't possibly eat all the vegetables she grew in a month, so she raised a lot of chickens and dogs.
Even so, a lot of vegetables still rot in the ground, so I'm especially happy that someone wants to eat the vegetables I grow.
"Yes, that's perfect. I don't have any vegetables for lunch yet. I'll go to your house to pick some later."
Seeing Aunt Guihua so happy, Wei Yuyan couldn't wait to go and pick the vegetables.
At noon, Wei Yuyan didn't cook; it was Zhang's wife who did: braised pig's trotters, braised pork, stir-fried loofah with eggs, stir-fried water spinach, amaranth soup, and braised tofu.
"Sister-in-law Zhang, this is the first time I've tasted your cooking, it's really good."
Wei Yuyan thought that Zhang Dasao's cooking skills were not bad, but she was reluctant to use oil. If she were willing to use oil, the taste would be even better.
"I'm sorry to make a fool of myself. My cooking skills aren't very good. Actually, it's the vegetables that are good. Aunt Guihua's vegetables are really tender and plentiful. There really are methods to growing vegetables."
Today, Sister-in-law Zhang went to Aunt Guihua's house to pick some vegetables. She found that Aunt Guihua's vegetables grew exceptionally well—neat, beautiful, and delicious.
"I take care of these vegetables just like I would a chick or a puppy. I water them when they're hot and cover them with blankets when they're cold."
Aunt Guihua was praised and happily chatted and laughed with everyone.
"Sister-in-law, look, Xiaohua still recognizes its mother."
While eating, Qianqian noticed that her little flower and the old female dog were huddled together.
"Yes, Mantou is heartless. Look, he's running around like crazy with Xiao Hei."
Xiuhua joked, and everyone at the table burst into laughter, creating a lively atmosphere.
In the afternoon, after everyone had eaten and drunk their fill and gone home, and the two children had fallen asleep, Wei Yuyan finally calmed down, hid the silver in several places, and then went to rest.
In the evening, Aunt Guihua came over to chat with Wei Yuyan.
"Wu Chen's wife, how did you end up moving here?"
Aunt Guihua had been too embarrassed to ask before, partly because she didn't like going out.
If she went out, she would surely hear that the Wu family's house had collapsed.
"Oh, Auntie, God is so unfair. It rained heavily the other day."
Some of the mud and rocks on the mountain were washed down by the rain.
It crashed into my house, causing several walls to collapse, making it uninhabitable.
I went to the village chief and rented this courtyard. I'll live here for a few months, and then move out once the new house is finished.
Wei Yuyan spoke about the matter very calmly, while Aunt Guihua frowned.
"If I had known it would be like this, I would have preferred to stay at my house. My house is big, and you could have saved some money."
Aunt Guihua knew that renting a courtyard would definitely cost money, and since she rarely left the house, she had no idea that Wei Yuyan was now earning money. She thought that Wei Yuyan and her family were particularly poor.
"Auntie, I understand your good intentions. The children are growing up and need their own space."
"Otherwise, it doesn't matter whose house I stay at. Sister-in-law Xiuhua's house also has spare rooms."
Wei Yuyan explained that if children live under someone else's roof, it will have an impact on their physical and mental health.
"You are such a good sister-in-law, treating Xiaolei and Qianqian like your own children."
Aunt Guihua praised.
"Of course, an elder sister-in-law is like a mother."
Wei Yuyan never had a child in modern times, so she doesn't know what it's like to be a mother.
Anyway, she treated them both like her own younger brother and sister.
"Sister-in-law, we're back, Grandma Guihua~".
"Sister-in-law, Grandma Guihua."
Xiao Lei and Qian Qian returned covered in sweat.
"Hey, you two had a great time today. Qianqian, did you go see Xiaoya today?"
Xiao Lei went to get water to wash his hands as soon as he came in, and Wei Yuyan pulled Qianqian aside to chat.
“I found her and taught her to write two characters. She said she didn’t want to go out, so I went out to play with her brother for a while.”
Qianqian answered seriously.
"..."
Wei Yuyan nodded and said nothing more. Grandma Xiaoya didn't know if she could hold on.
That night, Wei Yuyan and Qianqian lay in bed, feeling very calm.
The events of the past few days feel like a dream, but thankfully everything is under control.
I've been really tired these past few days. Before Qianqian fell asleep, Wei Yuyan had already fallen asleep.
The next morning, Wei Yuyan woke up feeling refreshed and then made the simplest breakfast: egg and scallion pancakes.
After eating, Wei Yuyan went out with the children as usual. Today was market day, and Wei Yuyan had to hurry to town to help out.
We tried to help in any way we could, and just as we reached the village entrance, we encountered an oxcart.
Wei Yuyan quickly waved her hand, saying that taking the oxcart would save some time.
"Get in the car~".
The couple in the car were older than Xiuhua's sister-in-law.
"Thank you~".
Wei Yuyan got on the oxcart, hoping to find something to chat about with this woman.
"You don't recognize us, do you?"
Unexpectedly, my sister-in-law took the initiative to speak.
"I don't go out much, so to be honest, I don't really remember it."
Wei Yuyan answered with a smile.
“My family and Zhang Licai and Zhang Lifu are cousins, and we live further back, so it’s normal that you don’t recognize us.”
The older sister-in-law responded in a rather gentle manner.
"So that's how it is. We've gotten to know each other today, sister-in-law."
When Wei Yuyan heard that he was a relative of Brother Lifu, she breathed a sigh of relief, as long as he wasn't an enemy.
The two chatted for a few minutes on the way and then arrived in town.
"Thank you, elder brother and sister-in-law, see you later."
Wei Yuyan got off the bus at the intersection, said goodbye to them, and quickly ran to the steamed bun shop.
"Sister-in-law, Auntie, please make way. I'm going inside to help out so you can buy the buns faster."
As expected, the area was packed with people, and Wei Yuyan had to exert a great deal of effort to squeeze in.
"Girl, you've finally arrived."
Li Fu breathed a sigh of relief; he was covered in sweat.
Business has been good lately, and he's been a little nervous, worried that customers might not buy anything if they have to wait too long.
"Yes, luckily I ran into your cousin's oxcart, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to get here so quickly."
Wei Yuyan quickly wrapped the meat pie and handed it over, chatting with Brother Lifu.
"My cousin? Do you know him?"
Li Fu was curious.
“I didn’t know him at first, your cousin-in-law told me.”
Wei Yuyan explained.
And so, the morning passed quickly. When the three of them finished their work, Li Cai and his wife returned from the market.
"Big brother and sister-in-law, younger brother and sister-in-law, you three should go back first. Your children will be getting out of school soon, and there won't be enough time to cook."
Xiuhua's sister-in-law reminded her.
"Alright, then we'll be going now. Xiuhua, please take care of the rest."
Aunt Zhang picked up her hat. Lately, she's been going home a little earlier than everyone else, otherwise the children won't have time to eat.
I'm worried that it would be even more dangerous for the children to cook at home by themselves.
The three of them rode the oxcart home. When Wei Yuyan got home, she found it was already late, so she decided not to cook rice but to make noodles instead.
