Chapter 3: Deciding to Stay

After the pancakes are cooked, start stir-frying carrots with a little oil, a few green and red peppers, and a little salt.

Finally, add the cooked carrots and some salt, stir-fry evenly, and it's ready to serve.

"Okay, dinner is ready."

Upon hearing Wei Yuyan's words, Wu Lei quickly turned back to avoid wasting firewood.

Wu Lei placed the stir-fried carrots on the table, and Wei Yuyan took out the bowls, chopsticks, and pancakes.

"Save these for dinner."

Wei Yuyan put two pancakes in everyone's bowl, and put the rest back in the cupboard.

"Brother, I can't eat two pancakes."

Wu Qian tore off a large piece of pancake and handed it to Wu Lei, who then glanced at Wei Yuyan.

"Eat it if you can, and put it in the cupboard if you can't."

Wei Yuyan felt a little silly. How could this little kid compare to her, eating two pancakes?

"I can't eat that much."

Wu Lei put the piece that Wu Qian had torn off back into the cupboard, feeling even more that his sister-in-law was acting strangely.

She used to make one and a half pancakes for herself and one for her younger sister. Why did she make so many today? Is it because she's leaving?

Wu Lei silently ate the pancake in his bowl.

"Why aren't you eating the vegetables? Is it not tasty?"

Wei Yuyan watched as the two children focused solely on eating their pancakes, without picking up any vegetables.

"tasty".

Wu Qian shook her head, then said something delicious and started picking up carrots to eat. Wu Lei also started picking up vegetables to eat.

All three of them thoroughly enjoyed the meal. The freshly baked pancakes were soft and fragrant with the addition of wheat flour.

"You guys go and rest, I'll do the dishes."

After dinner, the two children started to clean up the dishes, but Wei Yuyan took over, thinking that they had worked hard pulling weeds, so she decided to wash them herself, since it was just a few bowls.

Wu Lei nodded and led his younger sister back to her room. The older brother had told him before he left that his younger sister had grown up.

It's considered improper for him to sleep in the same bed as his younger sister, but she doesn't feel safe with him. So, Wu Lei puts his sister to sleep every day before going back to his own room.

"Brother, why won't sister-in-law let us wash the dishes anymore?"

Wu Qian was a little curious. In the past, her sister-in-law didn't like to wash dishes, so the brother and sister always did it.

"I don't know, but we'll do whatever our sister-in-law says."

Wu Lei couldn't explain his sister-in-law's behavior to his younger sister either. Over the past year, he had come to know that his sister-in-law wasn't a bad person and wouldn't harm him or his sister.

"Um".

Wu Qian took off her shoes and lay down on the bed, preparing to take a nap.

After cleaning the kitchen, Wei Yuyan prepared to go out to check on the Wu family's two acres of paddy fields.

I recalled that it was downhill, and you could see the whole village from this road.

The Wu family lived at the end of the village, just a few hundred meters from the foot of the mountain. It took about ten minutes to walk to the paddy fields, which was quite far.

Wei Yuyan looked at the paddy field; there was hardly any water in it now, just a shallow layer.

Wei Yuyan picked up a handful of mud, examined it, and concluded that the main reason was that the paddy field was not fertile enough.

Furthermore, these people don't know that they can plant two rice crops a year; they only plant one crop every year, so of course it's not enough to eat.

While other people's fields were full of weeds, Wu's paddy fields were clean and tidy.

This is all thanks to Wu Lei; however, it's still a bit cold working in the fields in this kind of weather.

After learning why there wasn't enough food, Wei Yuyan turned back.

On the way, I saw the river next to me and thought I'd go see if there were any fish in it. If there were, I could catch some to eat.

"Yu Yan~, why are you still here? Didn't you say you went back to your parents' home today?"

Hearing someone call her name, Wei Yuyan turned around and saw the village chief's daughter, Liu Cuifang.

Liu Cuifang was a little chubby with a round face and freckles, and wasn't very pretty. However, in the original owner's memories, the two of them were good friends.

Liu Cuifang was half responsible for the original owner's desire to leave this family.

Liu Cuifang flaunted her luxurious lifestyle and new clothes in front of her every day, which made the original owner even more resentful.

The day before yesterday, the original owner told Liu Cuifang that she had made up her mind to go back to her parents' home, and Liu Cuifang even pretended to be reluctant to let her go.

Looking back now, it's clear that Liu Cuifang had ill intentions.

"I don't want to go back to my parents' home. My two children still need me to take care of them."

Instead of confronting her directly, Wei Yuyan deliberately kept her in suspense.

“What could possibly happen to two children? Don’t forget, they have uncles, aunts, and grandmother in the village.”

When Liu Cuifang heard that she was not leaving, she became a little anxious. Why was she not leaving again?

After Liu Cuifang's reminder, Wei Yuyan realized that Wu Lei's uncle, aunt, and grandmother were...

It seems like I've been married into this family for a year, and my uncle hasn't come once. My aunt has only come once, and she was just there to freeload.

He stole the last piece of cured meat from the house, saying it was to give to his grandmother.

The original owner, Wei Yuyan, could only swallow her anger because she was an elder and had a thin skin.

If I really leave, I'm afraid that aunt who's always trying to freeload will come knocking on my door again tomorrow. Even though there's no meat at home, there's still rice and flour.

“We’ve separated now, we’re not family anymore. How could they possibly take care of two children? I’ve already decided to wait until they’re older.”

Wei Yuyan was serious; she had already made up her mind that the two children were too young.

She couldn't just abandon them and leave like that; she'd wait until Wu Lei was a little older.

As for Wu Chen, military service usually takes several years, and we don't even know if he'll make it back alive, so let's just pretend he doesn't exist.

Wei Yuyan walked forward while talking, and Liu Cuifang ran behind her.

"Yu Yan, what happened that changed your mind? Is it... Wu Chen wrote back?"

Liu Cuifang tentatively spoke up, otherwise why would Wei Yuyan have changed her mind overnight?

"No, it's nothing, Cuifang. I have to go now, I have something to do at home."

Wei Yuyan didn't want to explain these pointless topics to her, so she went straight home.

"Brother, sister-in-law is missing!"

When Wu Qian woke up, she found her sister-in-law's room door open, but the woman was not in the room.

After searching the house and finding my sister-in-law wasn't there, I started to panic. Had she really left?

"What?".

Wu Lei, who was still half asleep, heard Wu Qian's words and ran out of the room without even putting on his shoes. He looked into his sister-in-law's room and, sure enough, no one was there.

Wu Lei stood barefoot in the yard, lost in thought. Had his sister-in-law really left? She had said she was leaving yesterday. It seemed he couldn't stop her after all.

"Hmm~ Sister-in-law."

Wu Qian couldn't help but shed tears. Her sister-in-law was gone, and from now on she would only have her brother to rely on.

"What's wrong? Why is Qianqian crying?"

Wei Yuyan staggered home and pushed open the gate to find Wu Qian sitting on the table crying.

Wu Lei was also standing in the yard with a dark expression, wondering what had happened.
