Chapter 31 Heading into the Deep Mountains

"Alright then, sister-in-law, you must be careful. I will take good care of my sister."

Wu Lei didn't say anything more, only reassuring Wei Yuyan that she didn't need to worry about him and her sister.

"Yes, I will be careful. I won't go to dangerous places."

Wei Yuyan nodded with satisfaction. These two children really treated her like their closest family.

"Sister-in-law, you should go home early."

Wu Qian felt a little reluctant when she heard that she wouldn't be able to see her sister-in-law for another day.

"Okay, don't worry, I'll be back before dark. You can wait for me at Sister Xiuhua's house tonight, or you can wait for me at home, either way is fine."

Wei Yuyan was afraid that when it got dark and the children came home, they might be scared if she wasn't there.

In the afternoon, Wei Yuyan didn't sleep either. After finishing her meal and washing the dishes, she went to the river to wash her bed sheets and blankets.

It took half an hour to finish washing up. After returning home and resting for a while, Wei Yuyan began to think about what food to bring to the mountain the next day.

After thinking it over, I still think pancakes are the best. Add some chopped green onions and salt, and plenty of oil, and it will taste delicious.

We can also bring a tinderbox tomorrow, so we can heat up the flatbread while eating, and light a fire to scare away any wild animals we encounter.

After making up her mind, Wei Yuyan went to the vegetable garden to pick scallions, chopped them up, wrapped them in the pancakes, put oil in the pan, and fried them until crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.

Wei Yuyan made nine in total. She'll take six to the mountain to eat tomorrow, and there are three left, one for each person tonight.

Tomorrow, bring six, we can't finish them all. Wei Yuyan is mainly thinking that we can also lure some pheasants and rabbits.

The pheasant we kept at home for a few days last time is doing quite well; we can fatten it up a bit before eating it.

Besides the hoe for digging herbs, Wei Yuyan thought about bringing a weapon to the mountain. The machete was powerful, but too heavy.

Wei Yuyan still chose to bring the sickle, as it was lighter. She began to carefully sharpen the sickle until it was exceptionally sharp.

The two children didn't go out to play in the afternoon; they just watched Wei Yuyan prepare these things and then played with the chicks.

"Xiao Lei, here is a pound of flour. It's your and your sister's food ration at Sister Xiuhua's house tomorrow. Make sure Sister Xiuhua accepts it."

Don't feel embarrassed when you eat; you two siblings can't finish this food in a day.

Eat as much as you normally would at Sister Xiuhua's house, don't worry about eating too much.

Wei Yuyan is quite thoughtful; both children are actually quite sensitive, especially Wu Lei.

If he didn't bring food with him, he probably wouldn't feel comfortable taking any food at other people's homes, even though he usually eats only one and a half bowls of rice.

"Okay, sister-in-law, Sister Xiuhua and we are all acquaintances, so we won't be afraid."

Wu Lei nodded, indicating that he understood.

Wei Yuyan stopped arguing and put some things she would need for tomorrow into a cloth bag, then put it into her basket.

After dinner, the three of them went to bed early.

The next morning, before dawn, Wei Yuyan got up, quietly washed and dressed, and set off with her basket on her back.

When we reached the foot of the mountain, it was just getting light, but we could still see the mountain path clearly.

Today we'll be walking a long way, so Wei Yuyan tied her trouser legs up for convenience.

It took Wei Yuyan a full hour and a half (three hours) to reach the deep mountains.

The trees here are tall and lush, and there's a light mist. Wei Yuyan was afraid of getting lost, so she simply sat down to eat breakfast.

Starving, I ate two scallion pancakes and felt much better. I put down my basket and started looking for medicinal herbs right there.

"Wow, fritillaria cirrhosa~".

Wei Yuyan was victorious and found several Sichuan fritillaria bulbs, which she carefully dug out with a small hoe.

The fact that we found Sichuan fritillary bulbs indicates that the humidity and climate of this place are suitable for them, and there must be more nearby.

In this way, Wei Yuyan searched for about an hour and estimated that she had about two or three pounds of Sichuan fritillary bulbs. In any case, she dug up all the fritillary bulbs in this area.

Wei Yuyan began to move to a different location, marking the way as she went, and cutting down trees with a sickle as needed.

After walking for about fifteen minutes, they stopped to look for other medicinal herbs. When they came across dendrobium and notoginseng, Wei Yuyan didn't mind and dug them into her basket.

"Oh dear, Codonopsis pilosula."

Wei Yuyan found a large and long Codonopsis pilosula.

"If this place can produce such large Codonopsis pilosula plants, how come there are no ginseng plants?"

Wei Yuyan still has a strong obsession with ginseng; if she could find ginseng, she could build a new house.

Wei Yuyan wrapped the Codonopsis pilosula in a handkerchief. Although Codonopsis pilosula is not as valuable as ginseng, it is still more valuable than Panax notoginseng.

There was also a spring here. Wei Yuyan took a sip of water, sat down to rest, and started making a trap. Since there was a water source here, small animals would definitely come to drink.

Wei Yuyan took out a scallion pancake, tore off a small half and put it into the trap, and ate the rest.

Wei Yuyan hid and sat on a patch of grass, waiting for her prey to come to her.

While waiting for her prey, Wei Yuyan was also busy observing the surrounding plants, trying to find valuable medicinal herbs.

But I only saw some common medicinal herbs, such as Panax notoginseng, Dendrobium, and Fritillaria cirrhosa, but not many, not densely, just one or two here and there.

"Thump thump~~".

While Wei Yuyan was examining the medicinal herbs, the trap suddenly stirred. Wei Yuyan quickly went over to check and saw another gray figure.

But this time it wasn't a pheasant, it was a rabbit.

"Wow, a rabbit!"

Wei Yuyan looked at the rabbit with a headache. There was only one rabbit, so it couldn't breed. Otherwise, she could have raised many, many rabbits.

Wei Yuyan grabbed the rabbit's ears, and the rabbit began to struggle. It was incredibly strong, so Wei Yuyan simply took a rope and tied it around the rabbit's legs.

Tie it up and put it aside. Wei Yuyan dug up the medicinal herbs she had just seen. Even a small mosquito is still meat; every little bit counts.

Wei Yuyan continued digging as she walked forward. Since she was all alone in this forest, she wasn't afraid anyone would steal her rabbit.

An hour later, Wei Yuyan's basket was more than half full, and she was getting tired. It was already past noon.

Wei Yuyan took out a scallion pancake, ate one and a half and was full, leaving one and a half.

Wei Yuyan decided to take a different route back; perhaps a different route would bring a pleasant surprise.

After packing everything up, there's no time to rest, otherwise it will get dark soon.

Wei Yuyan carried the basket on her back and walked downhill, taking about half an hour.

Just as I was about to leave the deep mountains, I was drawn to a patch of light purple flowers.

"This is... saffron?"

Wei Yuyan wondered if she was seeing things; this looked like saffron.

Wei Yuyan quickly put down her basket and went over to check; it really was saffron.

"We're rich! We're rich!"

Wei Yuyan couldn't help but exclaim, taking out a cloth bag. Luckily, she was prepared and had a cloth bag ready.
