Chapter 99 Dragon Boat Festival

Back home, everyone was exhausted. The children, even though they hadn't actually done anything, were tired of sitting for so long at the market.

"Xiao Lei, are you guys going to sleep?"

Wei Yuyan stretched and felt sleepy.

"Sister-in-law, you go to sleep. My sister and I will heat up some rice dumplings to eat when we get hungry later."

Xiao Lei and Qian Qian are getting ready to go to the vegetable garden to pick vegetables to prepare food for the animals.

"good"

Wei Yuyan fell asleep as soon as she lay down on the bed, and when she woke up again, it was already late noon.

"I don't know if the children have eaten."

Wei Yuyan got up and washed her face first, then found the children sleeping in bed.

In the kitchen, there were still some zongzi they had heated up but hadn't finished eating.

Wei Yuyan thought for a moment, then went to the vegetable garden, picked a handful of green beans, and cooked a pot of green bean porridge.

I stir-fried some chili and mushrooms to eat with the porridge, so that the children can have porridge whenever they wake up.

Wei Yuyan drank two bowls of porridge and then busied herself washing clothes. The weather was hot now, and she sweated every day, so she took a bath every day.

Xiao Lei washed his own clothes, while Qianqian's and Wei Yuyan's clothes were washed together.

"Sister-in-law" Qianqian came out rubbing her eyes.

"Qianqian is awake. Wash your face and go have some porridge. Call your brother to join you."

Wei Yuyan realized it was almost time; if she slept too long, she wouldn't be able to fall asleep at night.

"OK".

Qianqian obediently did as she was told.

"Sister-in-law~".

Before Wei Yuyan had even finished hanging up her clothes, Sister-in-law Xiuhua arrived again, making Wei Yuyan wonder if she hadn't slept.

"Hey, Sister Xiuhua, have you eaten? I cooked some green bean porridge, would you like some?"

Wei Yuyan wrung out the clothes and hung them up to dry.

"I just finished eating, and I came to ask you to go snail hunting."

Sister-in-law Xiuhua shook the basket in her hand.

"I'll go too."

Xiao Lei ran out carrying half a bowl of porridge.

"I want to go too."

Qianqian also swallowed the porridge in her mouth.

"Alright, alright, I'll take you two there. I think you're about to get a free meal, sister-in-law."

Xiuhua's sister-in-law was both amused and exasperated; these two children were just too enthusiastic.

"That's right, they can eat their fill without me now and take care of themselves."

Wei Yuyan put the basin back, picked up the basket, and the children frantically finished the remaining porridge in their bowls, afraid that she wouldn't take the two of them with her.

"I actually wanted to collect snails today to add to a dish on the sixth day of the Lunar New Year. I need to make steamed buns tomorrow afternoon and sell them the day after tomorrow, so I don't have time."

Sister-in-law Xiuhua recounted the story.

"Yes, that's true. I've been very busy these past few days and haven't accomplished anything."

The soybean paste and pickled vegetables haven't been dried or pickled yet; we'll deal with everything after we sell the steamed buns for the Dragon Boat Festival.

Wei Yuyan had no interest in doing anything else until all the steamed buns were sold.

"I'm not in a hurry, I'm worried that the soybean paste might spoil at this time of year."

Sister-in-law Xiuhua had never eaten soybean paste before; it was Wei Yuyan who told her that soybean paste was especially delicious.

It's made by boiling soybeans, covering them, and letting them ferment and mold.

"It won't break; I have a secret recipe."

Wei Yuyan knew this wasn't the best time to make soybean paste, but she was just too hungry for it.

We can't wait that long. The best time to make soybean paste is actually in winter, especially after the start of winter.

"Alright, then I'll look forward to your soybean paste."

Xiuhua's sister-in-law was filled with anticipation.

The two adults and two children spent about 15 minutes in the water, filling a small bucket, before coming out.

"Let's stop touching it. I don't know if anyone else has touched it. It feels like there's not much water left. Next time, let's go to a smaller pond to touch it."

Sister-in-law Xiuhua felt there wasn't much left, and she was too lazy to touch it; enough for two stir-fries would be fine.

"Sister-in-law Xiuhua, why did you throw away the clam?"

When Wei Yuyan saw that Sister-in-law Xiuhua had thrown the river clams back into the water, she went over and started touching them again.

"This is disgusting, it tastes bad and has no flavor."

Sister-in-law Xiuhua shook her head. "Really? My sister-in-law likes to eat this?"

"This is delicious. You can ask Xiaolei and Qianqian if you don't believe me."

Wei Yuyan put the river mussels into her basket; Sister-in-law Xiuhua didn't know their value.

"Huh? But I don't know how to do it."

Xiuhua's sister-in-law began to suspect that she didn't know how to cook it, since her sister-in-law was a good cook and everyone loved what she made.

"Take a few more, and I'll make them for you on the day of rice planting."

Wei Yuyan smiled mischievously.

"good".

Xiuhua, who had initially decided not to touch them anymore, went back into the water and touched five or six river clams before coming up.

"Sister-in-law Xiuhua, wait a moment. Brother Zhang needs to buy meat tomorrow, but he hasn't taken the money yet."

Wei Yuyan called out to her sister-in-law Xiuhua, who was returning home, as she reached the door.

"It's the same if you pay him after you buy it tomorrow."

Sister-in-law Xiuhua thought that she was all dirty and that she might get the money dirty too.

"Okay, okay."

Wei Yuyan opened the door carrying a basket, and the two children were still catching crickets behind her.

Put all the snails and clams in a basin, soak them in water, and sprinkle a little salt on them so they will spit out the sand.

The village chief's house~

These past few days have been extremely difficult for Liu Cuifang. She's been wondering why Sun Wei hasn't come looking for her.

Didn't she promise to come find me? Liu Cuifang is probably too idle and has nothing to do.

I keep thinking about this because I've already made a big promise about it.

"Cuifang, what's wrong? You seem downcast."

The village chief's wife noticed that her daughter had been absent-minded these past few days.

“Mother, several days have passed, and he hasn’t come to see me. Don’t you think so…”

Liu Cuifang didn't say those words aloud, but the village chief's wife knew what they meant.

"Why don't you go to town to find him?"

The village chief's wife was just as anxious. If they didn't hurry, such a good family would be snatched away by someone else.

“Mother, didn’t you say that girls should be reserved? How can I take the initiative?”

Liu Cuifang certainly wanted to take the initiative, but if others found out about this, well...

"How about this, I'll send a message to your cousin tomorrow, telling her that she's going to watch the dragon boat races on the Dragon Boat Festival."

The village chief's wife blinked, and Liu Cuifang understood immediately. She then passed the message on to Sun Wei through her cousin.

If Sun Wei comes, it means we can officially start discussing marriage.

"Okay, I'll listen to you, Mother."

Liu Cuifang nodded shyly.

Happy Dragon Boat Festival!

Wei Yuyan, her sister-in-law Xiuhua and her husband, Xiao Lei, and Qianqian arrived at the market early with steamed buns.

Everyone was going to watch the dragon boat races in the afternoon, so a few people were working hard selling steamed buns in the morning.

I originally planned to bring them over during the dragon boat race this afternoon if we couldn't sell them all.

I thought someone might buy them, but to my surprise, the steamed buns and red bean rolls were all snapped up.

Today we have 270 steamed buns and 180 twisted rolls.

"Oh dear, I should have wrapped more. We could have worked harder and earned more."

Xiuhua's sister-in-law secretly lamented that there weren't enough bags.

"There's nothing we can do, Sister-in-law Xiuhua, we can't fit any more in the bags."

Wei Yuyan thought this would be a one-time thing; there would be too many people at the Dragon Boat Festival, and there wouldn't be as many people at the market next time.
