Upon hearing that her father had been beaten, Gu Nanjiao disregarded everything else and ran away.
"Jiaojiao, I'll go with you to borrow an oxcart from the village chief's house. That way we'll get there faster," came Lu's mother's anxious voice from behind.
Gu Nanjiao didn't stop walking, waving to her mother behind her: "I understand, Mother!"
Wang Sang ran all the way here; it must have been quite a feat for such a large man to run all the way from town. Now he's slumped on the ground, like a lump of mud.
Seeing Wang Sang panting heavily, Lu's mother was somewhat worried and poured her another glass of water. After drinking a whole pot of water, Wang Sang was able to move her limbs and regain some strength.
He stood up and bowed to Lu's mother: "Auntie, let's follow closely behind and go to the village chief's house. That will save time."
Lu's mother stepped forward to help Wang Sang up, and asked worriedly, "Are you...can you stand up?"
Wang Sang was still panting heavily when she heard this, and waved her hand: "It's nothing!"
And so, Lu's mother helped the unsteady Wang Sang walk toward the village chief's house.
On the way, encountering villagers hurrying by, Lu's mother couldn't help but ask, "Where are you all going?"
Knowing that Lu's mother and Li's wife were at odds, the villagers deliberately said, "Come and see what's going on! Your husband's younger brother's son got beaten up, near Yang Meiqin's house. Even the village chief is over there!"
Lu's mother was bewildered. What was going on today? It was always this person or that person who was being beaten!
With the village chief away and most of the villagers out watching the spectacle, Gu Nanjiao was sure to be disappointed when she went to the village chief's house to borrow an oxcart.
Thinking it over, Lu's mother decided to go along and tell the village chief about borrowing the oxcart.
When Lu's mother and Wang Sang arrived, they saw a group of people pointing and whispering outside Yang Meiqin's courtyard.
Yang Meiqin and Wang Dafu heard the commotion, but neither dared to come out. Wang Dafu was a prominent figure in the town; if word got out that he had been caught having an affair with a widow by the villagers, what would people think?
Yang Meiqin was afraid that Wang Dafu would find out about her having affairs with all the men in the village.
Under everyone's gaze, Lu Yanping slowly stood up, trembling like a leaf, and angrily pointed at Laifu: "It was him! Mother, this is the man who hit me!"
Laifu remained indifferent, as if he didn't care about the people in the village.
"You've hit someone and you're still so arrogant. Don't even think about leaving Toad Village until you give an explanation today." The village chief was absolutely furious. He had been the village chief for so many years and had never seen anyone so arrogant.
Seeing the village chief's angry expression, Lu's mother anxiously twisted the hem of her clothes: "How am I supposed to borrow the oxcart? I can't just go up there! Oh dear, I'm so worried!"
Wang Sang glanced into the crowd, and Lai Fu looked up as if he had been given a telepathic call, their eyes meeting.
"How could Laifu be here? Could his father be nearby?" Wang Sang wondered to himself.
"Why is the young master here? Will the master's affair be exposed?" Laifu couldn't help but wonder.
Wang Sang was simple-minded and couldn't fathom so many twists and turns. All he knew was that Gu Nanjiao and he needed a carriage to get to town as soon as possible.
Wang Sang's obese body squeezed and squeezed until he finally reached Lai Fu. Upon seeing Lai Fu, Wang Sang reverted to his arrogant young master demeanor: "Get down here! Give me the carriage!"
Laifu jumped down from the carriage, bowed his head and stepped aside.
Wang Sang's round body was surprisingly agile; he quickly boarded the carriage and drove off.
Taking advantage of the chaos, Laifu sneaked into the courtyard to inform Wang Dafu.
Everyone was stunned by what they saw.
Li rushed to the front of the carriage and blocked Wang Sang's way: "So it's you! You must be Yang Meiqin's lover. Tell me, why did you hit my son?"
Wang Sang looked bewildered for a moment, but then she understood.
It must be his father, who was caught red-handed cheating on his wife at someone else's house.
Wang Sang said fiercely, "Get out of my way! I'm not that mistress you're talking about. If you dare to stop me again, you'll regret it."
After saying that, he raised his whip and lashed the horse, stopping the carriage in front of Lu's mother. His voice softened as he said, "Auntie, come on up quickly, let's go find Gu Nanjiao."
Without hesitation, Lu's mother boarded the carriage. Her in-laws had been beaten, and she and Jiaojiao had to go and see what was happening.
Watching the carriage drive away, Madam Li was furious and started cursing at Madam Lu: "What a heartless aunt! She conspired with Yang Meiqin to frame my son and beat him!"
“Village chief, look, they know each other. The man who beat my son might have been hired by Gu Nanjiao. She’s teaming up with that slut Yang Meiqin to set a trap. Didn’t you see? The executioner who beat my son looked so well-behaved when he saw that fat guy. They’re obviously in cahoots.”
The village chief and villagers couldn't help but feel uneasy after hearing what Li said. The matter was indeed strange, but it seemed like a coincidence no matter how you looked at it.
At this moment, Lu Lao Er walked over and scolded Li Shi: "What nonsense are you spouting! Stop making a fuss without evidence. You're always causing trouble. Why don't you bring Yanping home? Aren't you ashamed enough already?"
Li was furious, her finger trembling as she pointed at Lu Lao Er: "Your son was beaten up, and instead of standing up for him, you made me bring him home? Is this how you act as a father?"
Lu Lao Er narrowed his eyes, suppressing his anger. He thought to himself that Li Shi was a brainless woman who wanted her son to marry Master Huang's daughter. If this got out of hand, and Yang Meiqin exposed Yanping and his affair, it would be a laughing stock. In that case, Yanping wouldn't even be able to marry a chicken feather.
If we were to vent our anger on him in this situation, his reputation would be ruined. Who would want to marry their daughter to a good-for-nothing who frequents widows at a young age?
Lu Lao Er tugged at Li Shi and said through gritted teeth in her ear, "If you keep making trouble, Yanping won't be able to marry Master Huang's daughter. If Yang Meiqin and his lover come out and accuse Yanping of a crime, Yanping will be truly ruined."
Upon hearing this, Li had no choice but to suppress her dissatisfaction and swallow this bitter pill.
She glared at Lu Yanping resentfully, thinking how she could have given birth to such a worthless child.
Lu Lao Er bowed to the villagers and the village chief, apologizing profusely: "I'm sorry to trouble you all. My son has offended a wealthy and powerful family. I will definitely discipline him properly when we get back. You don't need to offend the powerful for the sake of this brat."
Seeing what Lu Lao Er had said, everyone lost interest in getting involved and dispersed.
On the way, Gu Nanjiao heard Wang Sang give her a rough account. It turned out that just as school was about to end, several sweaty men rushed out of the door, grabbed her father, and gave him a beating. Behind them followed a shrew in her forties who pointed at her father's nose and cursed him, saying that he was unworthy of being a teacher, morally corrupt, and had actually been having an affair with her daughter-in-law, the two of them hugging and kissing, without any sense of shame.
Gu Nanjiao couldn't believe her father would do such a thing. Her father had always been refined, gentle, and cultured, and hadn't even had a female mosquito by his side for many years. How could he possibly be hugging and cuddling with a married woman?
The carriage sped along, and the journey that usually took half an hour was completed in less than a quarter of an hour, bringing them to Nanfeng Academy.
A crowd had gathered in the academy. Old Mrs. Wen stood with her hands on her hips, pointing at Gu Qingyan and cursing, "A teacher who educates people? Bah! I think he's just a lowlife. He actually got involved with my daughter-in-law, hugging and kissing in public. Aren't you ashamed?"
