Chapter 2: A Murder Case Caused by Corn Cakes
Day after day, the relationship between Su Zhi and Shen Zi'an gradually became harmonious. Although she was still troubled by the illness and was so poor that she could not even eat twice a day, she felt more comfortable than in the most prosperous days she had ever experienced. She hoped that her illness would heal quickly.
Su Zhi was sleeping soundly. She followed the folk remedy for eczema and asked Shen Zian to get some medicine so that she could sleep well. This time, she was woken up by the cold. She half-consciously felt someone helping her to press down the quilt. She slowly opened her eyes and found Shen Zian beside the bed.
"You're back?"
Su Zhi smiled, then thought that her face would not look good when she smiled, so she stopped smiling.
Shen Zian, however, became more cheerful because Su Zhi smiled. He brought her a bowl of water and said, "It's raining today, so I didn't go out. I'll stay at home with you. You can eat something later, and then I'll boil some medicine for you."
"It's raining? Open the window and let me see."
Su Zhi felt that she was about to get suffocated in this room. She was even happy when it rained. If she hadn't felt cold, she would have lifted the quilt to check. Although this quilt was thin, torn and hard, and who knows how many years it was, it no longer had much warmth-retaining function.
"It's a bit cold, don't watch it. You can watch it when you get better."
Su Zhi agreed. She was already sick and didn't want to catch a cold. The quilt she was wearing now was not warm at all, not to mention the room was drafty.
Speaking of this house, Su Zhi already knew that this house was not for living. She was sent here because she had this disease, and Shen Zian moved in with her to take care of her. Based on her understanding of Shen Zian, Shen Zian must have brought all his personal belongings with him, and his belongings were really pitiful. He only had such a thin quilt and a small bundle with a few tattered clothes in it, including an old and thin cotton-padded jacket and trousers. She wondered if Shen Zian would rely on this set of clothes to survive the winter?
"Are you cold?" Shen Zian saw Su Zhi shivering, so he opened the bag, took out the clothes inside and covered her with them, "I'm sorry for making you suffer."
"Didn't we have a new quilt when we got married?" Su Zhi asked. Because of Sun's mouth, she knew that Zhao Xiaomei was able to marry because her parents kept her illness a secret. That meant at least there was a wedding, right? Even the poorest son of a peasant family should have a quilt when he got married, right?
Shen Zian moved his lips twice and said, "Don't worry, I will definitely give you a new quilt."
Su Zhi knew something was wrong. There must be a new quilt, but it was gone now. Thinking back, it seemed that Zhao Xiaomei's quilt fell off as soon as she entered the bridal chamber, and then it became a mess. It was estimated that they didn't want to give her the new quilt after that.
"Will it be used by my third sister-in-law?"
When Su Zhi saw that Shen Zian remained silent, she knew that her guess was correct. She thought that the novel was really true. As expected, every farm family would have a few such top-notch products.
"I'll get you some food. Wait a minute. I made some cakes with the newly harvested corn. I'm sure you'll like them."
Shen Zian saw that Su Zhi was silent, and he felt sorry for her. Although she was married to him because she was ill, she was still his daughter-in-law, and he didn't even give her a bed and quilt. It was too much to say. Feeling guilty, he thought about getting her food quickly, so that he would feel better.
Su Zhi watched Shen Zian open the door a crack, drill out, and then quickly close it. She thought that this man was worried that the wind would blow into the house and make it even colder. He was really considerate. Feeling the man's simplicity and gentleness, she thought that maybe living with such a man would give her the kind of home she wanted.
Shen Zian didn't know that Su Zhi was no longer the woman he had married, and of course he didn't know what she was thinking. He just wanted her to get better quickly and have enough food and clothes to eat. Although her face didn't look good at all when she smiled, he still thought it was better for her to smile all the time, so that she would feel at home.
The Shen family's house was about 20 meters away from where Su Zhi lived, with a vegetable garden in the middle. Su Zhi's room was used to store firewood and useless things. Because they were worried that Su Zhi's illness would affect the whole family, they built a fence in front, making it look like a separate small courtyard.
"Hey, fourth brother, you are here? Aren't you in that room with your wife? What are you doing here? You are not here to get hot water again, are you? I am not saying anything bad about you, you already have firewood in your room, why do you always come to our place to put out the stove? There are only two of you in your room, but we have more than ten people here. You should also think about your family, don't forget your parents just because you got married. Oh, don't forget the firewood you promised to collect."
Sun was the only one in the kitchen. As soon as she saw Shen Zian come in, she immediately started to scold him for a long time.
Shen Zian glanced at her indifferently and ignored her. He knew what kind of person this third sister-in-law was. She could always use the last incident as a handle this time and make the unreasonable one sound reasonable. Although he knew it in his heart and was not a tongue-tied person, he always felt that it was very boring to argue with a woman over such a small matter. Moreover, this person was still his sister-in-law. He just kept silent and regarded it as a gust of wind blowing by. It would not lose a piece of meat.
"Don't worry, sister-in-law. I'll go get the firewood when the weather clears up."
After saying that, Shen Zian walked over and lifted the pot. He remembered that he had left some rice for his wife in it, but when he saw that the pot was empty, he frowned. He looked in other places, but there was nothing there.
"Third sister-in-law, where are the corn cakes I left for my wife?"
"Who knows? Should I still help you watch these?"
Sun was startled by the coldness in Shen Zian's eyes. This brother-in-law was usually capable and quiet, rarely smiled, and ignored her words. She was used to being rude in front of him, and was really scared by his cold questioning. The hand in front of her unconsciously tightened, and suddenly she grinned.
It turned out that Sun had really put away the two cakes that Shen Zian had left in the pot, and she had put them in the front of her clothes, so she blocked it with her hand. She accidentally pressed it down just now. Although the cake and the meat were still separated by her inner clothes, the cake was warm in the pot, and it was very hot. It really scalded her to death.
When Shen Zian saw her like that, his eyes fell on her hand. Seeing that oil and water were oozing out of her clothes, he immediately understood what was going on and became very angry.
"Third sister-in-law! How could you take the rice I left for my wife? Take out the cakes and let this matter be over."
Sun was just wondering whether to continue to be stubborn or hand over the things, when she suddenly heard a child's voice at the door shouting, "Grandpa! Grandma! Come quickly, my fourth uncle is bringing my mother to ask for cakes!" Sun was so angry that she cursed the boy in her heart, saying that he didn't call everyone over after he shouted like that, so wouldn't her stealing of cakes be seen by everyone? But she was not angry anymore, and only heard a series of footsteps.
It was still raining at this time, so only a few people came, but they were the most important people in the family.
Seeing this, Sun became even more anxious and started to cry and howl loudly: "How can I live like this? How can a brother-in-law force his sister-in-law to beg for food?! I won't live anymore, I'd rather die!"
As she said this, she bumped into the door frame. She also spotted her man Shen Ziping standing there, thinking that he would pull her, and she was just pretending. However, she didn't expect that there was a wooden stick under her feet, and she really bumped into the door frame. Although Shen Ziping pulled her, she still hit her forehead.
Sun howled in pain, covered her wound with her hand and found blood on it. After a moment's pause, she immediately sat on the ground and began to cry.
