Chapter 169 Sowing Discord
Following the second-in-command, we entered another stone cave. It was no room, just a place to sleep. Even with a fire burning inside, it couldn't hide the cave's chill.
Presumably assuming that Jiang Mi was a woman, the second-in-command didn't take her seriously at all. He dismissed the guards and began to scrutinize Jiang Mi without restraint.
Jiang Mi still wanted to get information out of him. She showed a timid expression and said, "Second Master, I really only came here to find my good sister. I'm satisfied to see that she's still alive. Can you let me leave? I can give you money, lots and lots of money. You don't have to live like this anymore. You can go somewhere where no one knows you and become a rich man, or do business and become a wealthy merchant. It's better than starving here. And you'll be the second master."
The second-in-command was tempted by Jiang Mi's words, but he was very unhappy with the last sentence: "What do you mean by that? Are you looking down on me for being the second-in-command? That's because of our brotherhood. If I wanted to be the boss, would Zhang Yi even have a chance?"
It seems the relationship between the two is nothing special, which makes Jiang Mi even more confident.
"I said this because I think the second-in-command is more capable than the first-in-command. It's for your own good. If you have money, you can go out and work for yourself. It's better than working for someone else. Not only is it stifling, but you can't develop your own ambitions and are constrained by others at all times."
Although the second-in-command was touched by Jiang Mi's words, he was still somewhat wary and said unhappily, "What do you know, you're just a woman? If you keep talking nonsense, I'll throw you out to feed the wolves!"
Jiang Mi said in a low voice, feeling wronged, "That's true. Even I, an outsider, can see it, let alone others. Just now, when those two young brothers brought me up, I heard them say that many people think the second-in-command is more capable than the first-in-command, but he is subordinate to others, which is really frustrating. If the second-in-command leaves to go solo, they will definitely leave with him."
The second-in-command was very tempted by these words. If he were alone, he would indeed hesitate to leave, but if someone was willing to follow him, he would have more courage.
"Are you telling the truth? Did they really say that?"
Jiang Mi nodded quickly: "Why would I lie to you about this? What good would it do me? They also said that the Boss is jealous of your talent and has been suppressing you all along. It's really too much. If it weren't for you, the Boss wouldn't be where he is today."
The second-in-command paced back and forth, these words struck a chord with him. When the gang was first established, it was he who supported Zhang Yi, which is how Zhang Yi became the leader. Moreover, he had been the one leading the charge all these years. In terms of merit, he was naturally the greatest. Without him, the gang would not be where it is today. But in the end, all the benefits fell into Zhang Yi's hands.
Seeing that the second-in-command had fallen silent, Jiang Mi knew her words had worked, so she pressed on: "Actually, I didn't come here entirely to find my best friend."
Upon hearing this, the second-in-command looked wary and asked Jiang Mi, "What? What are you planning to do then?"
Jiang Mi feigned shyness and said, "I have long heard about the Second Boss's heroic deeds and admire him greatly. Coming here this time to see the Second Boss in person is definitely worth it."
The second-in-command was delighted upon hearing this, but then asked curiously, "Really? Then why did you look scared just now? You were clearly terrified of me."
This half-blind man is quite sensitive, probably because he cares a lot about his appearance due to his blindness. His eyes were injured during a robbery, and he deserved it.
“The people here are too rude. I’m afraid of them, not you.”
The second-in-command still believed Jiang Mi's words without a doubt. After all, even if a woman lied, it wouldn't cause him any harm. Besides, these words made him feel quite comfortable.
“You have good taste. You’re smarter than your best friend. All she can do is flatter men. You’re right. I can’t live like this anymore. Zhang Yi is nothing. I’ll take this opportunity to reclaim my rightful place.”
"Second Master, what are you planning to do?" Jiang Mi asked excitedly.
.
The second-in-command glanced at her and said, "What are you asking, you're a woman. You wouldn't understand even if I told you. But you're smart and you deserve to stay by my side. Once I take back my rightful place, you can live a life of luxury with me."
At this point, he suddenly thought of Jiang Mi's background, and a greedy look appeared in his eyes: "You said your family is very rich? Since you admire me so much, you must be willing to help me financially, right? But don't worry, these things are not given to me for free. After I take back my rightful place, you will naturally benefit from them."
This was just empty promises. Jiang Mi looked at him with admiration: "Really? I don't ask for anything else, just to be your wife. I don't think my sister likes Zhang Yi. Can you help me get her out of here?"
"Of course, as long as you give me the money, I'll agree to anything you ask."
Jiang Mi sneered inwardly, but nodded repeatedly on the surface: "My family loves me very much. They will definitely agree to my request. Why don't you secretly send me down the mountain first, or help me write a letter home, and my family will send the money over."
This was risky, and the second-in-command hesitated. They were now wanted by the authorities, and regardless of whether the authorities were still making arrests, they couldn't easily expose their whereabouts.
"No, that's too dangerous. If we get caught, we'll be in trouble."
Jiang Mi said with distress, "What should I do? My family won't get the news, and they can't possibly send the money. I'll have to think of another way."
The second-in-command was also starting to have a problem. Jiang Mi continued to add fuel to the fire: "Now is the best time. Once we get back to our territory, it will be harder to make a move. People's morale is low, and many seem to have a problem with the leader. If we miss this opportunity, we'll miss it."
Zhang Yi is still indulging in his newfound pleasures, so now is indeed the best time to deal with him.
"Besides these two methods, are there any others? These are critical times, and we can't afford to be discovered."
"How about... we send someone over?" Jiang Mi didn't care; no matter what method they used, the county magistrate would eventually find out.
"Alright, I have my own trusted confidant, he certainly won't betray me. Are you sure your family won't report me to the authorities?"
