Chapter 218 Midwife
Upon hearing this, everyone's faces showed worry and tension.
"There might still be a risk to her life. I can only prescribe some good medicine to keep her in good spirits. The rest is up to the midwife."
Jiang's mother thanked the doctor repeatedly. When she saw Jiang Mi outside, she said with heartache, "Silly child, I told you to go back but you wouldn't move. Never mind, come in. It's better than freezing outside."
Jiang Mi nodded. As soon as she went inside, she felt much warmer. There were several stoves and charcoal braziers burning inside, and she felt like she had come back to life.
Inside the room, Su Yindi had already begun to cry out in pain. The midwife first checked her belly, then looked at other places, asked some questions, and then quietly pulled Jiang's mother into the outer room and whispered, "Although I can't guarantee the final outcome, there are some things I need to tell you in advance. If something goes wrong, will you save the mother or the child?"
Jiang's mother stumbled and almost fell backward, but Jiang Zhi immediately sat down in a chair, unable to accept it: "No, no, I want both!"
Jiang's mother also said, "Yes, we have to save both of them. Please, as long as the adults and children are safe and sound, we will give you a lot of money for your hard work. Please."
The midwife sighed: "That's what everyone says. Who doesn't want both the mother and child to live? But the situation is urgent right now, so we're just doing this in case something happens. You have to tell me. I've been delivering babies my whole life, and I'll definitely do my best to help you. But if any emergency occurs, you have to tell me. If you don't, I'll save the child."
"No!" Jiang Zhi panicked immediately. His legs went weak. "No, save the mother! You have to save the mother! I want my wife!"
The midwife was stunned for a moment, seemingly because it was the first time she had met such a good husband. In the past, she had always saved the baby. She glanced at Jiang's mother again, seemingly not believing that her mother-in-law shared the same idea.
Unexpectedly, Jiang's mother also resolutely said, "If there is really a problem, then save the mother. I want my daughter-in-law. As long as she is well, we can have another child in the future."
The midwife was nudged by Jiang Mi before she realized what was happening. She exclaimed with emotion, "You are such a kind family! Every family wants its own children and grandchildren, not daughters-in-law from other families. Your family is truly compassionate. Take good care of them. You are still young and can have more children in the future."
Having been through similar experiences, Jiang's mother composed herself and quickly invited the midwife inside. Jiang Mi then comforted Jiang Zhi, saying, "Don't overthink it. The midwife is just telling us the most dangerous situation. It might not really happen. Don't worry."
Jiang Zhi nodded, but it was unclear whether he had taken it all in. His face was full of confusion and worry. Jiang Mi could imagine that if something happened to Su Yindi and the child, Jiang Zhi would definitely not be able to accept it.
From inside came Su Yin's bitter voice. Jiang Zhi covered his face and squatted on the ground. He felt extremely sad that he could not help Su Yin.
“I usually spend all my time studying at the academy, and I have very little time to spend with your sister-in-law. When I do come back, I sometimes argue with her because of my pride as a man, and I don’t give in to her. This makes her life very difficult at home. Now that I think about it, I’m really not a good husband.”
Jiang Mi squatted down as well. She didn't know how to comfort her brother, so she could only stay with him and listen to his story.
Jiang Zhi continued, "Actually, my family was very poor before. I know that the most money we spent each year was on the academy, on my second brother and me. So my second brother and I always wanted to make something of ourselves so that we could live up to the family's sacrifices and support. Because of our studies, my second brother and I didn't have any income, and neither did my sister-in-law and brother. They lived at home every day and didn't have any spare money to spend. It was good enough if they could have enough to eat."
Jiang Mi also recalled her life before her rebirth; those days truly felt like a past life.
Jiang Zhi suddenly smiled. He touched his face, and Jiang Mi noticed that his eyes were red and he looked very sad.
“Now our family is doing well, and we are getting richer every day. It’s all thanks to my third sister that we have such a good life. But I still haven’t earned a single penny for the family.”
Jiang Mi quickly said, "Third Brother, why are you saying that? We're all family, and besides, you..."
"You and your second brother did so well on the exam, what's there to worry about? Our Jiang family will depend on you both from now on. If I were a man, I'd become an official too. Money is good, but ultimately it can't compare to power."
Jiang Zhi glanced at his younger sister. Although he knew she had matured and become more sensible than before, the fact that she could say such things showed that she was no longer just a pampered little girl at home.
"Honey, if I hadn't been by your side all this time, I would have thought you had gone through something and become so insightful. It breaks my heart to see you like this."
No one knows Jiang Mi's secret, and she doesn't plan to tell anyone. It will remain her secret alone, and she's glad that what happened before made her realize the truth now.
"So, Third Brother, you don't need to feel guilty. You didn't just eat and drink for free and idle all day. You've brought great honor to our Jiang family. Our ancestors will bless Sister-in-law and your children."
Jiang Zhi nodded, took a deep breath, and prepared to go in to accompany Su Yindi, but was stopped by Liu He and Liang Lan.
"Oh dear, you're a grown man, it's not appropriate for you to go in. Besides, you don't know anything, you'll just get in the way if you go in, don't delay things."
Jiang Zhi could only wait outside. He called out loudly to Su Yindi inside, saying, "Yindi, I made you angry before, it was all my fault. I promise I'll never argue with you again, I'll listen to you in everything, and I'll always give in to you. You have to be good to me!"
Seemingly after hearing Jiang Zhi's words, Su Yindi gave birth to the child smoothly in no time.
"It's a boy! Your Jiang family has an heir!" the midwife shouted happily. She was overjoyed. In the past, she would receive a fee and a reward after delivering a son. Families who had boys were always very happy. However, while this family was happy, they weren't as happy as she had imagined.
Jiang's mother quickly washed and wrapped the child up, placing him next to Su Yindi. Su Yindi had already fallen asleep from exhaustion. After taking care of the mother and child, everyone breathed a sigh of relief and came out.
The most excited person was Jiang Zhi. He rushed in and saw the sleeping mother and son. His eyes were red with emotion. Nothing could be more touching than this scene.
