Chapter 240 The Assassin
Huo Ran didn't say he would protect them, but instead suggested they help each other. After all, Jiang Xuan and Jiang Zhi were both men, and saying they needed protection would make them uncomfortable.
"That's fine, we're acquaintances. But what do you do in the capital? Are you in business too?"
Jiang Zhi chatted with Huo Ran very familiarly, and even rode on Huo Ran's horse. Huo Ran didn't say anything and generously gave it to him, while he rode another horse.
Huo Ran's men were all astonished. This young master was too generous, even giving away his beloved horse. It seemed that the young master had to please his maternal uncle to make his wife happy.
Jiang Xuan didn't say anything, but instead got back into the carriage with Jiang Mi, and the group continued their journey.
Fortunately, they brought plenty of food, so they had no worries about food and drink along the way.
Sure enough, it was very late when we finally found a very remote inn. Although the conditions weren't great, it was still better than sleeping in the middle of nowhere.
Jiang Xuan and Jiang Zhi didn't think much of it, as they had all suffered hardships in their childhood. Jiang Mi didn't think much of it either, but Huo Ran's nonchalant attitude surprised her.
Jiang Mi slept in a room by herself, while the two brothers, Jiang Zhi and Jiang Xuan, who were used to being frugal, stayed together that night to save on room fees. However, when it came time to pay, they discovered that Huo Ran had already paid for everything.
"This Huo Ran is quite the smooth talker, being so polite. Speaking of which, he's one of our family's biggest benefactors." Jiang Zhi couldn't help but sigh, "Big benefactors are so magnanimous; they don't care about such a small amount of money at all."
Jiang Xuan just listened without saying much. He followed closely behind Jiang Mi. He didn't know if it was his imagination, but he felt that Huo Ran was trying to get closer to Jiang Mi, and his eyes were almost always on her. Anyone with eyes could see that he was being too enthusiastic.
"Young Master Huo, it's getting late, you should get some rest too."
Jiang Xuan stopped Huo Ran, preventing him from following Jiang Mi any further; this person was definitely not as simple as he seemed.
"Alright, everyone should get some rest too. We need to get up early tomorrow morning to continue our journey."
Huo Ran also realized that he had been too obvious. After being reminded by Jiang Xuan, he immediately turned around and went back to his room. If he continued, he was afraid that he would offend his two brothers-in-law.
This was Jiang Mi's first time riding in a carriage for such a long time. After eating and taking a bath, she fell asleep and slept very soundly that night. She was only awakened in the middle of the night by some noises coming from the roof.
"What is that?" she muttered to herself. She had finally managed to sleep so soundly, so who was making noise in the middle of the night?
She rolled over, realizing something was wrong. Who would go up on the roof? Could there be a villain?
Thinking of this, she quickly got up and dressed. She noticed that the person on the roof had gone to the right, so she quickly opened the door and went out. Following the footsteps, she walked to the right until she stopped in front of Huo Ran's door.
There's been no movement? Could it be that the villain is after Huo Ran?
Just as Jiang Mi was hesitating whether to call for help, the door was suddenly opened from the inside, and Huo Ran, wearing only a white shirt, stared at her in the hazy night.
Jiang Mi's face flushed red again, which was quite embarrassing. How could this person be so seductive with such a serious demeanor?
"What's wrong? Can't you sleep?" Huo Ran's voice was very gentle, especially in the night, it seemed to have an added touch of allure.
Jiang Mi almost forgot why she came. She came to her senses and said, "No, I heard a sound over here, so I came to check. The sound disappeared when it got to you. Did you hear it?"
Huo Ran heard it, of course. If he hadn't, he wouldn't have come to open the door. He never expected to see the woman he liked when he opened the door.
"Shh..." Huo Ran put his index finger to his lips and whispered a shushing sound. He pulled Jiang Mi outside, and the two of them went to the window to listen to the sounds inside.
Sure enough, after a while, the sound of breaking tiles came from inside. Then, the window on the other side was opened, and someone quietly walked to the bedside, raised a long sword high, and slashed at the bed.
"Bang—" A very heavy sound came from inside, indicating that the person had used all their strength.
Jiang Mi's mouth dropped open in surprise; it seemed this person was trying to kill Huo Ran!
She turned to look at Huo Ran and saw that Huo Ran's expression was still calm, as if he was not surprised and as if he had already taken it for granted.
When the person inside realized something was wrong and tried to escape, Jiang Mi was just about to warn Huo Ran when Liu Min and the others seemed to have been waiting outside. The group blocked the person inside, and then Huo Ran and Jiang Mi followed them in.
"Tell me, who sent you?" Liu Min first glanced at Huo Ran, then pressed the assassin for answers.
Seeing that he had no hope of escaping, the assassin's lips twitched. Liu Min immediately shouted "Oh no!" and rushed forward, pressing down on the man's mouth. But it was too late; the man had already chewed up the poison in his mouth and swallowed it, dying from the poison.
"master?"
Liu Min called out, then lowered his head in deep self-reproach. "It's all my fault. I should have realized he had poison in his mouth, but he still got away with it."
Huo Ran didn't care at all: "It doesn't matter. Anyway, you and I both know who did it. Who else could it be but that person?"
Liu Min kept his head down and didn't say anything. Suddenly, he waved his hand, and the others carried the body out and cleaned up the room.
Feeling uncomfortable, Liu Min asked, "Master, would you like to change your room?"
Huo Ran paused for a moment, then said, "Let's change. This place is dirty, and I don't want to stay here any longer."
Huo Ran's room was arranged next to Jiang Mi's, not on their own initiative, but because that was the only room left. Huo Ran looked at Jiang Mi's expression and asked with concern, "Did I scare you just now?"
Jiang Mi shook her head: "It's alright. I'll probably see more in the future. You were frightened too, so get some rest."
Huo Ran felt very worried watching Jiang Mi's back, but Jiang Mi didn't turn around. She lay back down on the bed, but this time she couldn't fall asleep. She didn't fall asleep until dawn, which made her sleepy when she got to the carriage.
Jiang Xuan, her face sour, asked, "Didn't Young Master Huo sleep in the room on the east side last night? Why did he come out from next door to Honey this morning?"
Jiang Zhi was taken aback for a moment upon hearing this: "Really? I didn't notice that. Are you sure you're not mistaken?"
Jiang Xuan looked at him coldly: "Impossible. I absolutely did not remember wrong, nor did I see wrong. It is you, as the older brother, who does not care about Mitang at all."
