Chapter Fifty-Two: Trouble Comes Knocking
Although his mother was right, he was still concerned about whether he was born to her.
"Hmph!" Mother Jiang snorted coldly, glaring at her eldest son: "You're thick-skinned and eat everything, you'll never die from eating!"
Just then, the three daughters-in-law who had been waiting inside also came out.
Su Yindi yawned repeatedly, looking at Jiang Mi who seemed unharmed, and said sarcastically, "Oh, so it's our precious daughter who's back. In the middle of the night, the only one who can keep everyone awake is you!"
It was indeed her fault today. After being criticized, Jiang Mi had nothing to say and could only apologize first: "Thank you for your hard work, sisters-in-law. Get some rest."
"Hmph!" Su Yindi snorted coldly and turned to go into the house.
The other two sisters-in-law also exchanged a few perfunctory greetings before returning to their rooms to rest.
Jiang Mi hugged her mother's waist tightly and said in a coquettish tone, "Mom, I was frightened today. I want to sleep with you tonight!"
As for how to hint at the drought, she had an idea in mind. In the village, only her grandfather had the authority to speak on the matter; naturally, she needed someone who could persuade him.
Jiang's mother couldn't resist her daughter's coaxing and agreed to sleep with Jiang Mi without thinking, leaving Jiang Cheng to spend the night alone in the empty room.
The mother and daughter went back to their room to rest under Jiang Cheng's resentful gaze.
Fifteen minutes after everyone had fallen asleep.
Boom—
Rumble—
Lightning flashed and thunder roared across the sky, with thick, serpentine bolts of purple lightning flashing continuously, and soon a torrential downpour began.
"Ah!" Jiang Mi, who was sleeping peacefully, screamed and sat up abruptly in bed, her head covered in cold sweat.
Jiang's mother was a light sleeper, and her daughter's call woke her up instantly. She quickly pulled her into her arms, patting her gently, and softly comforted Jiang Mi with her quilt, "Don't be afraid, don't be afraid! Mom is here."
Jiang Mi nestled tightly in her mother's arms, her hands gripping the front of her mother's clothes. Still unsettled, her voice trembled, "Mother, I had a nightmare..."
She dreamt of her past life, scenes of her family dying tragically because of her, and the destruction of her family.
Her past life was still vivid in her mind, making it impossible for her to sleep peacefully; every time she dreamed of it, she was filled with fear and joy; or she would cry her heart out in the dead of night.
Sensing her daughter's fear, Jiang's mother felt a pang of heartache and gently comforted her, trying to dispel the surrounding darkness.
"Our ancestors appeared in my dream and told me that there will be a severe drought in a month and a half..." Jiang Mi lay in her mother's arms and told her mother the exact time of the drought. She also tapped her mother's ear to remind her to tell her grandfather so that the villagers could prepare.
Because of what happened before, Jiang's mother already believed her daughter's absurd claim that the ancestor had appeared in her dream.
Gently patting her daughter's back, Jiang's mother said with a serious expression, "I will talk to your grandfather about this."
"Okay!" With the big problem solved, Jiang Mi finally felt relieved and fell asleep peacefully under her mother's coaxing.
Looking at her daughter's sleeping face, Jiang's mother felt a pang of heartache and stroked her daughter's face with a pained expression.
I wonder what Honey has been through during this time. It's as if she's grown up overnight and become much more sensible.
As a doting mother, Jiang Mi's mother had been carefully observing her daughter's every move and naturally noticed the unusual behavior Jiang Mi had been exhibiting lately.
But her daughter was indeed the real deal. After thinking it over, Jiang's mother still blamed everything on Wang Jie; maybe it was all because of that beast Wang Jie, that beast must have forced Honey to be so sensible!
With her mother by her side, Jiang Mi slept soundly.
The next day, the rooster crowed.
Because of sweet potato cultivation, everyone in the family went to work early. Apart from Su Yindi cooking at home, Jiang Mi had plenty of free time.
From the moment Jiang Mi woke up, she could hear Su Yindi groaning and complaining of backaches as she cleaned.
Although Third Sister-in-law was known for her cunning and laziness, she rarely complained like this.
"Ouch, my back!"
"Unlike some people who enjoy peace and quiet at home, some people are working themselves to the bone, while others are bored out of their minds..."
Jiang Mi couldn't stand it anymore and took over the work, saying, "I'll cook lunch today, you just rest!"
"Since you've put it that way, I can't refuse. So, lunch is yours today!"
Seeing that someone was willing to take over, Su Yindi was naturally delighted. She immediately threw down her work, plopped down in a chair, and her aching back finally eased.
Su Yindi rubbed her calves, inwardly complaining that her back and leg pain was getting worse and worse; if it really got to this, she would have to see a doctor.
Thinking about it, she carefully examined her own figure; looking down at her slightly protruding belly, she sighed helplessly, wondering if it was because she had been eating too well lately, that she had actually gained weight, and even her complexion had improved a lot.
Seeing her third sister-in-law's gloating expression, Jiang Mi felt helpless.
Just as the two were sitting in the shade of a tree enjoying the cool air, a group of people suddenly barged in aggressively.
A pale-faced boy, foaming at the mouth and barely alive, was carried and placed in the center of the courtyard; a thin little girl with pigtails was lying on the edge, crying and screaming loudly.
Seeing that things were not going well, Su Yindi stood up from her chair and scolded fiercely, "Hey, hey, what are you doing! Barging in like this, believe me or not I'll report you to the village chief."
One of the men wiped the cold sweat from his brow with a towel, looking troubled: "Auntie, you can't blame us! This is a matter of life and death, we have to be anxious."
These words amused Su Yindi, who pointed at the half-dead boy on the ground and said, "Human life is at stake, what kind of nonsense are you playing with our Jiang family's methods? We're not doctors who save lives!"
"Waaaah! You bunch of bad people, give me back my brother's life!" The girl with pigtails suddenly stood up from the ground and charged fiercely towards Jiang Mi. She was so fast that no one could stop her.
As a result, because Jiang Mi was too fat and the girl was too thin, this force was like a tickle to her. Instead, she was bounced back and fell flat on her face.
Upon hearing this, Jiang Mi frowned and pointed at the boy lying on the ground: "Little girl, you can eat whatever you want, but you can't say whatever you want. Your brother isn't dead yet, so why are you crying here?"
Zhu Erniu's face was covered in snot and tears, with pale yellow snot blowing bubbles from her nostrils. Combined with her sallow face, her appearance was indescribable, even disgusting.
Looking at the plump and round Jiang Mi, she shouted, "My brother ate the sweet potatoes your family grows, and before we even got home, he started foaming at the mouth and acting out a whole bunch of things. Now he's unconscious! If you don't give us an explanation today, we're not leaving!"
"Oh dear! Look at my temper!"
