Chapter Twenty-Two: Settling in Hongyang Village
"Did you all hear that?" Village Chief Yang glanced at the villagers of Qingyun Village. "If you heard that, get out of my way."
Upon hearing this, the villagers obediently stepped aside.
Village Chief Yang left with a dark expression. As for what Zhou the sorceress had asked him to do, he would naturally agree.
Since the villagers pooled their money anyway, all he needed to do was organize it.
Huo Ran, who had been watching the villagers' reactions, turned completely ashen-faced upon seeing this scene. These villagers were utterly foolish.
When his gaze fell upon Zhu Qiancheng, whose hair was completely white, a hint of admiration flashed in his eyes.
Soon, Village Chief Yang finished writing the release order, and with a stern face, he handed it to Zhu Qiancheng: "Take it."
Zhu Qiancheng had just put away the release order when Jiang Mi and her family had already packed their things.
Upon seeing them emerge and the bundles they carried, Zhu Qiancheng was taken aback: "Is that all you brought?"
"Yes. The things at home are too old, and I was originally planning to replace them anyway. We can just buy new ones when we get to Hongyang Village." Mother Jiang waved her hand casually; this was also her idea.
"Alright! As expected of my daughter. In that case, come back to Hongyang Village with me." Zhu Qiancheng said, turning around and heading towards Hongyang Village.
Just as they were about to leave Qingyun Village, Village Chief Yang called them back again: "Jiang Cheng, if you step out of Qingyun Village now, it will be equivalent to voluntarily giving up everything in the village. In the future, there will be no place for you in the village, including your land and houses."
Jiang Cheng paused, then turned to look at Village Chief Yang: "Whatever you say."
After saying that, he prepared to leave again.
But Jiang Mi stopped in her tracks and turned to head home.
When he saw Jiang Mi return, Village Chief Yang's heart skipped a beat. He involuntarily took a step back, afraid that Jiang Mi would beat him up. He stammered an explanation: "This is the rule from above. Once you leave the village, you are considered to have given up everything in the village."
Jiang Mi simply walked past Village Chief Yang and went back to her own kitchen. A moment later, she came out, and thick smoke began to billow from the entire Jiang family home.
In no time, the entire Jiang family home was engulfed in flames.
"You!" Village Chief Yang stared at Jiang Mi, pointing at her with wide eyes, after seeing that she had set the house on fire.
Then, after being given a dismissive glance by Jiang Mi, he immediately fell silent and took another step back.
Jiang Mi withdrew her gaze and walked towards the Jiang family members.
"You little rascal, you're really vindictive." Zhu Qiancheng looked at Jiang Mi, who had rejoined the group, with amusement.
Jiang Mi smiled shyly at Zhu Qiancheng: "This house was built with great effort by our ancestors. Since they have all driven us away, why should I leave the house to them?"
"Well said! Let's go home." Zhu Qiancheng patted Jiang Mi on the shoulder happily and led them towards Hongyang Village.
After the Jiang family left, Village Chief Yang glanced at Yang Liu, then turned and headed home.
Yang Liu's initial excitement at watching the Jiang family leave vanished completely after seeing the village chief's lecherous glare.
But she knew even better that if she really offended the village chief, she would be in deep trouble in Qingyun Village. Besides, following the village chief was better than following the lame Zhang.
With that in mind, she quietly followed Village Chief Yang.
The Jiang family members were taken back to Hongyang Village by Zhu Qiancheng.
"Old Zhu, why did you bring your son-in-law and his family back to our village?" As soon as Zhu Qiancheng led them into the village, the villagers who were chatting at the village entrance gathered around and asked curiously.
Zhu Qiancheng then told them what had happened in Qingyun Village.
"She's a real scoundrel. She tried to take away a perfectly healthy life. That Zhou the sorceress from Qingyun Village is a money-grubber. As long as you pay her enough, she can turn black into white. How can anyone believe her? It's like the whole village is seriously ill."
"Exactly! Exactly! A few years ago, my niece went to see a fortune teller named Zhou to tell her husband's illness. She was swindled out of all her money and even gave her directions. As a result, she did what the fortune teller Zhou said and almost sent her husband to his death. Fortunately, she met a doctor from the city at that time, and he was saved."
"Exactly! Exactly! Of all people to believe, why believe in Granny Zhou? You might as well go to the Pagoda Temple in town and find Master Tianming!"
"Son-in-law of the Zhu family, don't worry, you'll feel right at home in our village. Don't be shy, just let us know if you need anything!" The crowd surrounded the Jiang family members again, offering words of comfort.
After chatting for a while, Zhu Qiancheng raised his hand to stop the enthusiastic villagers: "Alright! Alright! It's getting late. I'll help them settle down first, and I still need to find someone to buy them some household items."
Upon hearing Zhu Qiancheng's words, the crowd immediately dispersed. Just as Zhu Qiancheng was about to leave with Jiang Mi and the others, an old man called out to Zhu Qiancheng, "Old Zhu, have them come to my house later. I'll have my brat take them there in an oxcart. Otherwise, we might not be able to bring back the things we need."
“Alright!” Zhu Qiancheng didn’t stand on ceremony with the old man and readily agreed.
After Zhu Qianchen left with Jiang Mi and the others, Huo Ran was surrounded by the old men: "Young man of the Huo family, why did you come back with Old Zhu?"
"Yeah! I think you seem to be getting close to Old Zhu's son-in-law!"
A group of elderly men surrounded Huo Ran, each offering their own comment.
After walking a distance, the Jiang family members turned around and saw that Huo Ran had not followed and was surrounded by the old men. Jiang Mi looked quite surprised.
Seeing that the others hadn't followed and were looking at Huo Ran with surprise, Zhu Qiancheng laughed and said, "Young Huo moved into our village a few months ago. He's an extremely capable young man who has helped our village a lot, so we all like him very much. Speaking of which, the reason I went to your village today is thanks to this young man. He said he learned how to grow sweet potatoes from your family, so I was curious about what sweet potatoes were and wanted to ask you about them. If I hadn't come, you would have suffered a great loss this time."
Zhu Qiancheng's face darkened as he thought about what had happened earlier.
Wishing him a bright future made the expressions of the Jiang family members even more strange.
There really are some coincidences in this world.
Just then, Huo Ran finally broke free from the group of old men and walked over.
"You still haven't told me what that sweet potato is, or what its origin is?" Zhu Qiancheng looked at Huo's mother: "Hua Li, tell me."
Zhu Huali glanced at Jiang Mi: "It all started with a dream that Honey had..."
Zhu Huali then repeated the same story that Jiang Mi had told them to Zhu Qiancheng.
Zhu Qiancheng was stunned and asked Huo's mother, "So, this sweet potato could potentially yield a thousand catties per mu?"
Then he turned to Huo Ran and asked, "Young man from the Huo family, is this the planting technique you're going to learn?"
