Chapter 105 The Boy Looks Like a Girl
Time was already tight, the task was heavy, and money was scarce.
Now that this fire has started, isn't it just adding insult to injury, like adding fuel to the fire?
Mu Xi nearly lost her balance: "What's going on? Are there any casualties? Or was it arson?"
"I don't know the situation yet." Mu Xun said hurriedly, "I came back to inform my father and you, and I'm heading over to check now."
"Why you?" Mu Xi asked, dissatisfied.
Mu Xun didn't immediately understand what Mu Xi was dissatisfied with: "No matter what, the Qifengtai matter has fallen on the hands of the Jin Fangjun family. Now that something has happened, someone from the Jin Fangjun family should step forward."
"Then I should be the one to go." Mu Xi had already started thinking about what emergency supplies to bring.
Mu Xun naturally objected: "No, your health is not fully recovered, the situation at the scene is unclear and dangerous. Father will not let you go either."
Just then, the small kitchen delivered dinner.
"Eat first, no matter how urgent it is. If you're going over there tonight, are you going to stay there?" Mu Xi had no appetite at all and started thinking about how she could come along.
Mu Xun didn't refuse and quickly picked up two pieces of food with her chopsticks.
"Take it slow, it won't make a difference if we wait a little longer," Mu Xi advised, mainly because she couldn't think of a solution yet.
Mu Xun drank more than half a bowl of soup in one gulp: "Time is tight. I still need to wash up and pack some clothes. I'll probably have to stay at Qifeng Terrace tonight."
Mu Xi was surprised, not expecting Mu Xun to want to move in, but this made things easier.
Mu Xun finally put down his chopsticks and stood up: "You don't need to worry in the manor. Just take good care of yourself and get well soon. I will keep you informed if anything happens."
"Okay, I understand," Mu Xi replied.
Mu Xun left the city that night and did not return to the mansion for three days.
The next day, Mu Xi asked her scumbag father, Mu Zhen, to go to the site, worried about the progress of Qifengtai, fearing that it might not be completed on schedule.
The scoundrel refused, saying he had already petitioned the king.
On the third day, Mu Xi requested to go to the scene again, as money was scarce.
The scumbag father hesitated, but in the end he still refused, saying that the allocation of funds was up to the Sikong Mansion, and if there was really no money, the Jin Fangjun Mansion could not help.
On the fourth day, Mu Xi made another request, saying that she should send some food, clothing and medicine to Mu Xun.
The scumbag father had been worried these past few days, and after hesitating for a long time, he finally agreed.
So Mu Xi took Bao Fan and Cao Pan'er, along with a cartload of relief supplies, and rushed to Qifengtai.
The reason for choosing Cao Pan'er was simply because she was probably more familiar with the people and things of Qifengtai than others.
After preparing the carriages and horses and gathering all the necessary supplies, Mu Xi and his party arrived at Qifeng Terrace close to noon.
The bright sun that was shining when I went out was suddenly covered by dark clouds, and it looked like it was about to rain.
Upon learning of Mu Xi's arrival, Pinghu Yingyue's eyes showed no surprise but only worry: "Why are you here? Where is Jiang Meng? Didn't he go back to report? Didn't he stop you from coming?"
"Jiang Meng probably went back to his residence to report to the Lord, and then went to the Military Equipment Department. He didn't know I was coming." Mu Xi was led to the east side of a scorched earth area, where there were makeshift sheds.
The sheds were built with wood and thatch, crooked and of varying sizes.
Mu Xun understood immediately: "Yes, I haven't returned to the Western Border. Li Yi's reports are always delivered in duplicate to the Military Equipment Department."
"You've been staying here for so many days?" The room Mu Xi entered was fairly large and tidy, presumably where Mu Xun had been staying these past few days.
There was nothing inside except a bed and a table.
It was so rudimentary that it couldn't be more basic. Mu Xi turned back and instructed Cao Pan'er and Bao Fan, "Quickly bring everything in."
Mu Xun invited Mu Xi to sit on the only square stool at the table, then took out a small charcoal stove from under the table and started a fire to prepare tea: "It looks like it's going to rain today. Have a cup of tea, sit for a while, and then go back."
Looking at Mu Xun, who looked haggard and tired, Mu Xi felt apologetic: "No rush. Now that I'm here, I don't plan to go back."
"How can this be?" Mu Xun placed the clay pot directly on the charcoal stove to heat it. "Does Father know?"
Mu Xi dodged the question: "Of course I know, otherwise how could I have brought these people and their clothes here?"
Mu Xun was skeptical: "The young master never lied before."
Mu Xi had no intention of explaining: "Natural disasters are inevitable, but with something like this happening, people are bound to be unsettled. How can I, who took on this responsibility in the first place, just stay in the mansion and not show my face? Even if it's just to appease people, I should stay for a while."
"Stay for a while? Are you planning to stay for several days?" Mu Xun objected even more.
Just then, a hearty laugh came from outside: "Hahaha... I heard the Crown Prince has come in person?"
Mu Xi was able to recognize Yan Shu, the official in charge of the Imperial Household Department, and stood up to greet him: "Lord Yan, you've had a long journey."
Yan Shu hadn't seen her for half a month, and the radiant look on her round face had faded, but her words were still as casual and carefree as ever: "Your Highness must have been nervous to come here, right? Don't worry, everything is fine. There were no casualties, and even the batch of slaves assigned last time survived. It was mostly the timber and building materials that were destroyed."
Mu Xi then asked, "Has the arsonist been found? Is there any progress with the Court of Justice?"
Yan Shu raised her fox-like eyes on her round face: "Don't count on the Court of Justice. It's good enough that the fire wasn't started by the Court of Justice."
"What do you mean by that?" Mu Xi couldn't understand whether Yan Shu was implying something.
"The Court of Justice has always been more trouble than it's worth." Yan Shu seemed to have a complete disdain for the Court of Justice. "I don't know which bastard started that fire. If I catch him, I'll tear him to pieces. This is simply a deliberate insult to my official reputation."
Mu Xi knew to some extent that the fire at the Qifengtai construction site was partly due to lax supervision.
Furthermore, since she was merely a figurehead as the heir apparent of the Jin Fang family, and given her lowly status, no one dared to hold her accountable if anything went wrong; the blame would likely fall on Yan Shu.
Feeling somewhat apologetic, Mu Xi cupped his hands and said, "This matter should have been my responsibility, but now Brother Yan has taken it all upon himself. I feel really bad about it. I have nothing to offer in return, but if there is anything I can do to help you in the future, please don't hesitate to ask."
"Oh dear, what are you saying, Your Highness? Based on my friendship with Chengfeng..." Yan Shu glanced at Mu Xi and Mu Xun, then suddenly changed the subject, "Oh dear, there are some things I really have to say. You two brothers, upon closer inspection, really don't look alike. Your Highness has a bit of a feminine air about you..."
"Ahem..." Mu Xun abruptly interrupted, "Yan Shu, watch your words."
"Ah, yes, yes, yes..." Yan Shu wasn't particularly afraid, but rather nonchalant. "The phrase 'male with feminine features' is inappropriate. I should use a different term. To be fair, Chengfeng, although you are handsome, you are not as refined as the young master..."
