Chapter 59 A Close Call

Chapter 59 A Close Call

"Because at the crime scene, he was just venting his emotions, and it is highly likely that he caused his mother's death in a state of passion. He felt that he might not necessarily be at fault."

Zhang Xin said with a smile, and the cat in his arms meowed. He then smiled and scratched the top of its head with his finger, and continued, "As for the scene of the body disposal, whether it was dumping or burning, in his heart, the guilt and remorse generated by these two actions themselves were far greater than the crime scene itself."

"Therefore, driven by his guilt, he would return to the scene where the body was dumped, not the crime scene."

“Go back to the scene where the body was dumped and wait there. When he is overwhelmed by this guilt and remorse, he will return there to seek his so-called redemption.”

After hearing these words, Jin Shu's mouth was half open, and she didn't react for a long time.

I was so shocked that I couldn't recover for a moment.

She even suspected that the man in front of her might also have traveled from modern society to the Great Wei Dynasty.

In this day and age, is it really possible for anyone to research psychological portrayal to this extent?

“Mr. Jin, there’s no need to be so shocked.” Seeing her standing there in a daze, Zhang Xin laughed heartily. “Compared to my late master, I am far inferior.”

Seeing that Jin Shu seemed somewhat interested, he added a few more words: "If Mr. Jin is interested, you can take a look at the 'Essentials of Inquiry into the Heart' in the library. That book was written by our patriarch, and the current art of profiling originated from it."

“Let’s read the book later.” Li Jin interrupted the two of them. “Zhou Zheng, take your men and go back to the scene where the body was dumped. Jin Shu, come with me.”

Zhang Xin was stunned for a moment.

Just now, did Li Jin use the word "I"?

Watching the three of them leave, Zhang Xin walked to the door, a faint smile playing on his lips, lost in thought. The tabby cat in his arms never left his hand, and his palm never stopped moving.

A moment later, with a smile on his face, he turned and went back into the house.

“That’s interesting,” he said. “I never expected someone to like that.”

It was still early, and the sunlight, like a pale golden veil, draped over the vast land outside Chang'an City.

At this moment, Li Jin, sitting in the carriage, was completely unaware of how Zhang Xin had misunderstood him. His carriage sped out of the capital and headed towards the northwest post station.

As soon as they arrived at the post station, before the carriage had even come to a complete stop, Li Jin jumped out of the carriage and headed straight for the dilapidated mud house.

Jin Shu watched his retreating figure, handed the reins to Zhou Zheng, and said without turning her head, "I'll follow him first."

He looked just like an old constable who had followed Li Jin for many years, which momentarily stunned Zhou Zheng.

Jin Shu jogged all the way to catch up with Li Jin, who was walking briskly. She stood panting and bent over at the door of the dilapidated house.

Li Jin walked around the area from left to right. Just as he returned from the other side of the ruins, he saw Jin Shu still panting and suddenly started running.

Zhang Xin was actually half right!

The person was indeed at the scene where the body was dumped, but judging from their current appearance, it didn't seem like they came to commit suicide!

In the blind spot of Jin Shu's gaze, a gleaming dagger and a man with a face contorted with heartache, despair, and pain rushed out.

Li Jinjian moved with lightning speed, grabbing the bewildered Jin Shu and pulling her behind him.

As he opened and closed the black fan in his hand, the blade of the dagger was firmly stuck in place. To Jin Shu's astonishment, a sharp little knife fell from the other end of the fan handle.

The man in the pale yellow shirt skillfully caught it and, in the blink of an eye, placed it on the neck of the person in front of him.

"Xia Xiaowu, how dare you!"

A crisis was resolved easily in the blink of an eye by Li Jin's skillful and fluid movements.

Startled by his rebuke, Xia Xiaowu froze on the spot, his head buzzing, too terrified to move.

He had never seen such oppressive power before. The murderous aura emanating from the man's eyes made him feel as if he had fallen into an ice cave, leaving him at a loss.

When Zhou Zheng arrived, the other shadowy figures, each wearing half a mask, had already pinned Xia Xiaowu firmly to the ground, while Li Jin, standing to the side, had a terribly grim expression.

In front of him, Jin Shu lowered her head, looking like a wilted eggplant, nodding repeatedly as she listened to the admonition.

"You're a constable from the Six Doors, after all. You should be a little more vigilant in a place like this." He said irritably, "If I weren't here, the consequences would be unimaginable."

Turning to see Zhou Zheng, Li Jin took a deep breath: "Why did you let her come up alone? In this condition, let alone a knife, even a punch would probably make her take three months of leave. What about the cases during those three months?"

The case? Jin Shu was taken aback; this guy was actually concerned about the case.

Originally, she was quite grateful to Li Jin for saving her. Now, half of that gratitude has faded.

To solve the case, Prince Jing really went all out. He even personally took to the front lines, facing a life-or-death crisis, which is truly admirable and moving.

To everyone's surprise, Zhou Zheng was straightforward and blunt: "With Mr. Jin with the Prince, even the Heavenly King himself couldn't touch you."

One sentence left Li Jin speechless.

He opened and closed his mouth, and after a long while, he blurted out a few words: "That makes some sense." He flicked his fan open and walked towards the post station on his own.

Seeing Zhou Zheng's calm and composed demeanor, Jin Shu gave him a thumbs up: "Thank you, Lord Zhou."

“Sir, there’s no need to worry. The prince may have a sharp tongue, but he’s kind-hearted. He’s just concerned about you.” After saying that, he added, “Sir, please take good care of yourself. Taking leave is a small matter; your monthly salary is a big deal.”

This surprised Jin Shu, who asked in astonishment, "Does this mean that work-related injuries aren't reported?"

Zhou Zheng remained expressionless and said with absolute certainty, "If it's you, sir, there's an eight or nine out of ten chance you won't report it."

"Huh?" Jin Shu was stunned.

This treatment is terrible!

On the second floor of the inn, in the largest private room, Li Jin sat on the central octagonal chair, drinking tea while glancing at Xia Xiaowu, who was kneeling silently in front of him, out of the corner of his eye.

He was disheveled, dressed in rags, and looked dazed. He seemed to have suffered a tremendous psychological shock, and was in a daze, as if he had lost his soul.

Seeing his cowardly appearance, Li Jin slammed the teacup in her hand onto the table with a loud bang.

The sudden noise finally brought the man back to his senses, and he looked at Prince Jing, who sat in the center with an icy gaze, with horror.

"What did you do that I, the king, need to set an example for you?" He was still furious. Looking at Xia Xiaowu's face, he recalled how Xia Xiaowu had ambushed Jin Shu earlier.

I'm so anxious and annoyed, I really want to punch him.

"You have the courage to kill, but not the courage to admit it," Li Jin sneered. "No wonder your mother sees you as a coward."

The word "coward" was like a knife, stabbing deeply into Xia Xiaowu's heart. His shoulders trembled, and a flash of resentment appeared in his unfocused eyes.

It seems Zhang Xin was right; his mother is his unspeakable pain.

"What do you know?!" Xia Xiaowu glared angrily at Li Jin. "How could you possibly understand my pain!"
