The next day after buying the seeds, Song Nanting went to the military family compound. When she arrived there, it was still early, so Song Nanting went to Aunt Song's house to borrow a hoe and went back to plow the soil.
Aunt Song had nothing to do now, so she took the pickaxe and came over with her, "I'll work with you, it'll be faster if we work together."
Just as she was about to leave, Niu Huihui took out a small cloth bag from the house and stuffed it into Song Nanting's pocket. "My mother sent this for you. Take it home and eat some when you are free. It is good for your health."
When Song Nanting saw that they were actually some fried peanuts, she quickly refused, "Sister-in-law, you can keep them for yourself. I don't need them."
Niu Huihui was not happy that she didn't accept it, and said with a straight face, "You should take it if you are told to. At least call me sister-in-law. This little thing is nothing."
As they were talking, the child in the room started crying. Niu Huihui hurriedly said, "You guys go quickly. I'm going to go inside to see the child."
Niu Huihui's child was born in early February and is now out of the confinement period. Because she is very active on a daily basis, she has recovered quickly.
Aunt Song smiled and said, "Let's go. I have to come back later to cook for your sister-in-law." She added, "Come over at noon as well."
Song Nanting agreed with a smile, planning to go and cut some meat and bring it over when the time comes. She couldn't just show up empty-handed.
When they got to the yard, Song Nanting opened the door and they went in. Looking at the large yard, Auntie Song was very surprised and said, "I don't think you can eat all the vegetables you have planted here."
Song Nanting hesitated, "How about growing some food? Is that possible?"
"Okay, why not? I see two families are growing wheat, so you can grow some too. Maybe you can save a lot of flour." Aunt Song is very familiar with farming. After coming here, her son's yard was too small and there was not much space for him to grow crops. He could only grow some vegetables and be self-sufficient, but he couldn't grow any grain.
But after thinking about it, Song Nanting changed her mind and said, "Auntie, what do you think about me planting some fruit trees?"
Aunt Song was stunned for a moment, then smiled, "Not bad, it's spring now, I'll go with you to ask people nearby where they sell fruit trees, and buy two. It's best to buy mature fruit trees, maybe they'll bear fruit next year, otherwise it'll take forever to plant some new seedlings and they'll bear fruit."
Song Nanting became happy and looked around the yard, thinking about how to clean it up.
There is also an area about two meters wide at the base of the west wall where vegetables can be grown, so you can plant more fruit trees at home.
Apple trees and pear trees must be planted. Song Nanting also wants to build a grape trellis in the yard so that she can sit under the trees and drink tea and have dinner in the summer. It would be so beautiful.
I haven’t got any idea about the fruit trees yet, so I’ll start with the vegetable garden. The gate will be on the southwest side, so the vegetable garden will be towards the southeast. There is a thatched hut in the southeast corner.
Leaning against the thatched hut, the two men began to cultivate the land. It seemed that someone had lived in this yard before, but it was probably several years ago. One could still vaguely see traces of the land being divided into ridges at this location.
After turning over the place where vegetables were planted, the two men went to turn over the soil near the wall outside.
The door of the house across the street opened, and an old lady led her children out. When she saw them, she smiled and said, "Xiao Song is turning the soil to plant vegetables in advance."
Song Nanting nodded, "Yes, we'll turn the soil while the weather is warm and plant it in the next few days."
The old lady smiled in an ambiguous way and said, "You can also plant crops on the land near the wall. The yard is so big, are you afraid that you won't get enough to eat?"
Song Nanting was a little puzzled. "If we can't eat this now, we can just dry it and eat it in the winter. It's better than leaving it idle. That would be such a waste."
"That's not a waste." The old lady curled her lips and smiled awkwardly, "Before you came, this place has always been cultivated by our family. You don't know that we have a large family, nine people big and small."
When Song Nanting heard this, she was surprised! This family is really fertile.
Aunt Song ignored what the old lady said and just kept digging the ground.
Song Nanting praised, "Then your sister-in-law is quite amazing."
The old lady was embarrassed and did not explain.
"Then this land..."
"This land belongs to my family, so of course my family will continue to farm it." Song Nanting smiled. "It was fine when no one lived there before, and we had no control over who farmed it, but since this yard has been allocated to my partner, it's our turn to farm it from now on, so there's no problem with that, right?"
The old lady pursed her lips, a little unhappy, "That's fine, but...but I have many children..."
Song Nanting was puzzled. "How difficult is it for your child to be raised by us? That doesn't make sense."
The old lady immediately frowned and couldn't help muttering, "You're not even married yet."
Song Nanting said coldly, "Auntie, I heard it."
The old lady smiled awkwardly.
Song Nanting said directly, "Lu Jianan and I have obtained the marriage certificate, and we are husband and wife. I believe you also saw me beating Zhao Hongying that day. I am not the kind of person who bullies others, but I will not allow others to bully me. You are good, I am good, and everyone is good, don't you agree?"
"Yes." The old lady dragged the child into the house with a sullen face, scolding the child as she walked, "Hurry up, you are so short-sighted, be careful that everyone will scold you in the future."
Oh, this is a veiled attack.
Song Nanting sneered and started turning the soil as well.
But it was just planted last year, so it was easy to turn the land over. Aunt Song and I finished turning it over in no time.
After they finished, Aunt Song said, "I have to go back to cook. You can go over to eat after leveling the ground. You can plant the vegetables tomorrow. I'll go with you."
Song Nanting agreed, watched Aunt Song leave, and then leveled the ground again.
While she was working, Du Hua, a woman from the opposite house, came over with a dustpan. She stood by the roadside and watched Song Nanting busying herself. She smiled and said, "You look so delicate and young, I didn't expect you could do this kind of work."
