Chapter 39 Entering the Main Storyline

"What's the matter?" Zheng Yizhao asked, motioning the two to get in the car.

Yang Jia handed the letter over directly, "Take a look at this first."

Zheng Yizhao read through it quickly, his surprise barely concealed in his tone. "Where did you get this from? I've tried so many methods, but I can't find a clue. Yang Jia, you're incredibly lucky!"

Yang Jia did not deny this, nor did she explain how she received the task. After all, she still had many doubts about the ID card.

Thinking of this, she couldn't help but turn and glance at Li Bai. To be honest, all the doubts in her heart had only arisen after Li Bai reminded her, so Yang Jia always suspected that Li Bai might have guessed something. But since she didn't say anything, Yang Jia tacitly didn't ask.

Some issues become boring if you talk about them openly.

Zheng Yizhao sighed briefly before getting down to business. "This information is a contribution to the guild. I'll count it towards your contribution later. Is that okay?"

"Okay." Yang Jia nodded and asked him, "Do you want to keep this letter?"

Zheng Yizhao thought about it, shook his head, and handed the letter back to her, "There's no point in me keeping it. It would be better if it could be delivered according to the original plan." Now the enemy is in the open while they are in the dark, so they can know all the progress. In this way, they can sit back and watch the snipe and the clam fight each other, and be the one who benefits from it.

Yang Jia took the letter back and said, "Of course."

She had considered this possibility when she opened the letter, so she didn't resort to brute force. If she was careful and re-stitched it, it would be fine. However, "I can't guarantee that the other person won't notice the letter has been opened."

After all, there might be some hidden codes on the letters that people use to convey messages, and it would be hard to avoid them no matter how careful you are.

Upon hearing this, Zheng Yizhao immediately said, "Let's give it a try. I'll go with you. If that doesn't work, we can see if we can convince Liu Chang to cooperate with us. After all, our goals are the same, so cooperation is possible."

Yang Jia thought about it, felt it was okay, and agreed.

So Zheng Yizhao drove the two of them directly to find Liu Chang. The clue had also come from Old Man Wang, but he didn't specify where to find Liu Chang, only two possible locations. This meant they would have to work harder to find him.

The first location was a bar in the west of the city called "One Thousand and One Nights." When the three of them arrived at the bar, they discovered it was still closed and wouldn't open until after 7 p.m. They had no choice but to move on. Fortunately, Zheng Yizhao had a car, so it wasn't a hassle. Seeing this, Yang Jia couldn't help but consider buying one too. After all, their team had to leave the city every day, which meant they spent a lot of time on the road. A car would be much more convenient.

And if you think about it a bit more broadly, the cars here are just like the mounts and flying pets in the game: they can be ridden and used as combat aids. Because of their speed, they're perfect for luring monsters and escaping. However, regular cars have poor defense, so they probably won't work.

But there are so many talented people in my factory. I can just buy it and have them modify it. Maybe it can even increase the factory's income. After all, players will need these things in the future. However, the money players have is probably not much, so they can't afford it for the time being.

But if we continue to expand our horizons and take car modification to the extreme, we will be able to research armored vehicles and even heavy weapons such as tanks, which can be used in future wars.

However, this kind of research will cost a lot of money, so it can only be considered at present.

The second location was a restaurant. It was dinner time when the three of them arrived. There were many customers in the restaurant, but Liu Chang was not found.

"I don't know how long we have to wait. Why don't you go inside and wait? I'll treat you to dinner." After waiting for half an hour and still no one showed up, Zheng Yizhao spoke very gracefully.

Of course, his main invitation was definitely Li Bai; Yang Jia was just a sideline. After all, it wouldn't be good for the two of them to go in and eat, leaving her here alone. So Yang Jia remained silent, waiting for Li Bai's response. As expected, Li Bai refused.

Seeing this, Yang Jia leisurely pulled out a bag of sliced bread from her bag, then took out ham, tomatoes, and lettuce, sliced them separately, sandwiched them between the bread, and finally spread cheese on them. She handed the sandwich to Li Bai and asked Zheng Yizhao, "Would you like one?"

Zheng Yizhao smiled gracefully and said, "Thank you very much."

Yang Jia found this person even more annoying. He clearly didn't like him that much, but he always managed to be kind and graceful, as if he had no other thoughts in mind.

After finishing his sandwich and packing up, Yang Jia was about to speak when he saw the target person out of the corner of his eye, "Liu Chang!"

They didn't actually know what Liu Chang looked like. But perhaps because it was his mission, Yang Jia immediately recognized him as Liu Chang. He left the restaurant with a long-haired beauty by his side and headed toward the nearby shopping mall. Yang Jia noticed four or five people hiding in the crowd behind him, quickly following. Clearly, they were protecting him, but they weren't following him in a high-profile manner.

This was because Yang Jia had been training outside the city for a while, making him more sensitive to this aspect, and because his basic stats had improved after the upgrade, he was able to notice it. Ordinary people probably wouldn't realize that there was any difference between Liu Chang and others.

Yang Jia began to understand who Liu Chang was.

There's black and white in the world, and even a city has its own forces, both superficial and underground. If the City Lord's Mansion represents the most visible power in Phoenix City, then Liu Chang is likely the representative of the underground forces. No wonder he dared to plot against the City Lord; it turns out he had something to rely on.

This would create a complex problem. Yang Jia was almost certain that the letter he had opened could not be hidden from Liu Chang. After all, these people were the most cautious and always had their own ways of distinguishing, especially when it was such an important matter.

Hearing her voice, Zheng Yizhao and Li Bai also sat up straight and asked, "Where?"

"The one who just entered the mall," Yang Jia said. "But there's another problem now." She expressed her guess. "It could be dangerous to just send the letter over. This kind of person is extremely suspicious, and he might not believe us."

Zheng Yizhao was silent for a moment, then said, "Let's go and see first, don't alarm him."

The three of them got out of the car and entered the mall, then tacitly separated. After all, the three of them together would be a big target and would likely attract Liu Chang's attention, so it would be much easier to separate them.

Since only Yang Jia knew Liu Chang, she followed him directly and pointed out the target to the other two, while Zheng Yizhao and Li Bai each chose a direction.

Liu Chang had clearly come with the woman next to him. The first floor of the mall was devoted to jewelry and cosmetics, which naturally appealed to the woman, but Liu Chang himself showed little interest. After a few whispers with the woman, he went upstairs on his own.

Yang Jia hurried to catch up, but Liu Chang was taking the elevator. Fearing being discovered, she took the longer route up the stairs, signaling Li Bai and Zheng Yizhao to follow. The mall had five floors, and she had no idea which one Liu Chang was going to. But with three people, each taking a floor, the chances of losing him were slim.

As they went upstairs, Yang Jia took a quick look. The second floor housed a large chain supermarket, the third floor was a clothing store, the fourth floor was a tea bar, and the fifth floor was a movie theater. After a moment's hesitation, Yang Jia headed straight for the fourth floor. After all, given Liu Chang's status, it seemed unlikely he'd be shopping for a supermarket or clothes. It was more likely he'd be sitting in a tea bar.

But when he reached the fourth floor, he didn't see Liu Chang. Yang Jia thought about it, turned around and went downstairs, just in time to meet Zheng Yizhao who had returned empty-handed.

The two exchanged glances. Zheng Yizhao headed upstairs, while Yang Jia chose to go downstairs. The cinema was dark, making it difficult to find someone. But Zheng Yizhao refused to give up. After all, he was far more desperate than Yang Jia. Time was running out. If he couldn't quickly become the lord of Phoenix City, the advantages he'd accumulated in the early stages would be overtaken.

Yang Jia went downstairs and saw Li Bai standing in front of a shelf in a daze. She walked over and asked in a low voice, "Did you find anything?"

Li Bai shook his head, and Yang Jia explained the situation on his side. "Zheng Yizhao went upstairs. Should we go upstairs too, or wait downstairs?"

"Go downstairs." Li Bai made a decision quickly.

After all, they weren't familiar with this mall, so maybe they'd simply lost someone. The woman Liu Chang had come with was still downstairs, and Liu Chang would definitely go down again, so they just had to keep an eye on her. If they delayed too long, the woman might even leave, which would be very troublesome.

Yang Jia nodded and turned to walk towards the stairs. Li Bai followed her, and before leaving, he turned back to look at where she had just stood. At the bottom of the shelf were boxes of Chinese chess, five yuan a box, for students only.

After going downstairs, the two waited for a long time, but neither Zheng Yizhao nor Liu Chang showed up. After a while, the woman who came with Liu Chang received a phone call, then her face changed drastically and she left in a hurry.

"Do you want to follow?" Yang Jia asked Li Bai.

Emotionally, they should go find Zheng Yizhao, after all, something must have happened there. But losing this woman would be a shame. After all, according to Zheng Yizhao's plan, he was working with Liu Chang, so the more he knew about him, the greater his chances of success. Liu Chang's whereabouts were elusive, so to find out about him, this woman was the best place to start.

"You go and follow me, I'll go upstairs to take a look." Li Bai said.
