Chapter 9 "I love you, daughter."

"Just the two of us?" he said.

Xiaohan's eyes became firm.

"You are the hope of the future, Doctor." Xiaohan said, "If it's you, you can definitely do it... If anyone can save the world, I believe it's you."

Su Mingan smiled bitterly. He was no longer the original Dr. Su Changan. He knew nothing about vaccines.

He is just a [No. 1 Player] who has a death replay function.

As it was getting late, they didn't have time to rush back to the R&D center, so they decided to sleep in a tavern they passed by earlier. Zombies are very active at night.

"Knock knock knock." Xiaohan knocked on the door.

"Grandma, I want to stay here for one night!"

There was silence inside the door.

Xiaohan's expression became nervous and he forced the door open. Inside the room - a white-haired old lady was sitting at the table, eating noodles with her head down.

The old lady's usually smiling face became very numb, and there was a black and white photo hanging on the wall.

Hearing the sound of the door opening, the old lady raised her cloudy eyes.

At her feet was the body of an old man with a gunshot wound to his head. He had committed suicide by shooting himself.

"My old man..." the old lady said, "is dead."

"He hasn't been active lately. He refused to cook noodles even when I asked him to. It turns out he got infected when he went out a few days ago..."

"Before he turned into a zombie, he kept holding my hand and saying he loved me. It's really... At such an old age, he still said such disgusting things. He finally cooked me a bowl of noodles and told me to live well and stop thinking about him. Then, he shot himself."

The old lady slurped her noodles.

The noodles are already cold.

Xiaohan stood at the door in silence. She didn't expect that the person she had just met during the day would be her last farewell at night.

As the old lady was eating, she suddenly choked up and burst into tears:

"If he were still alive, he would definitely like it..."

"This noodle has oyster sauce and greens, it's his favorite."

"When he was young and pursuing me, he liked to treat me to noodles at the alley entrance. He rode a tattered bicycle with the bell ding-dong-dong. I wore a big flowered jacket and pigtails. He said I was the prettiest girl in East Street."

"Why, why has the world become like this..."

She choked with sobs, her head almost buried in her face, her white hair as light as feathers.

The noodles were cold, and her white hair soaked in the noodles like melted snow.

"Before the apocalypse, I always complained about him not moving around, and I had to urge him every time I swept the floor. After the apocalypse broke out a few years ago, he suddenly became braver than anyone else."

"He took the initiative to go out and bring me food and water... He wouldn't let me go out. He would get angry if I did, and he said he would just go find the resources."

"He's obviously an old man, but he acts like a man."

"I love him... Even if he is not handsome anymore, is old, and has a bad temper, I still love him."

"I love him..."

"I love him..."

“…”

Xiaohan remained silent.

There were tears in the corners of her eyes.

Suddenly, a roaring sound came from underground.

The old lady's expression tensed. She didn't even bother to eat her noodles and walked downstairs with "dong dong dong".

Su Mingan followed him all the way into the basement, which was a closed room where a woman was tied to a bed.

The woman's skin was covered with black patches, which were signs of infection with the zombie virus.

"Grandma." Xiaohan was terrified: "Why do you keep a zombie at home?"

"Nonsense! This is not a zombie! This is my daughter!" The old lady wiped away her tears: "Although she was infected three days ago, she can definitely hold on, absolutely..."

"I, I'm not a zombie..." A woman's voice came softly.

She was in tears, and although her mind was hazy, she was still trying.

Suddenly, a baby cried, the woman wailed and gasped, and the blood accumulated more and more below.

Su Mingan understood why this woman insisted on living.

——She wanted to bring a new life.

Xiaohan didn't care too much, she had medical knowledge and could help with babies.

The smell of blood became stronger and stronger.

The baby didn't know that the woman next to him who was in great pain was his mother. He just cried with a wrinkled face, and he didn't know the sufferings of the world.

The woman opened her eyes, looked at the baby, and her last bit of life flowed away.

"We must make sure he..." The woman's voice was barely audible: "Live to see the new century with birds singing and flowers blooming."

...If she could hold on a little longer, if she hadn't been infected with the zombie virus.

…Will she be able to watch the child grow up, teach him to read and write, and see with him the new century when humans reclaim the city?

If she was a good mother...

The next moment, roars from zombies were heard, and the woman's skin quickly shrivelled.

She completely mutated into a zombie.

She suppressed her desire for flesh and blood and persisted until the last moment of mutation. Then, she used up her last bit of strength to bring a pure white child into the world.

How will morality exist in an era where force and interests are paramount? It is love.

The old lady trembled, raised the gun, pointed it at the zombie woman, and helped her end her pain.

"My daughter. I love you. I love you..."

The word was spoken so obscurely by the old man.

The weight of the dead is enough to crush the souls of the living.

The old man pulled the trigger with trembling hands covered with scars.

The zombie woman screamed.

But at the moment the gun was pointed at her,

She stared at the newborn baby in the cradle, and for a moment her eyes became clear.

"Live..." she said.

At the moment of death,

——She seemed to smile.

Relief, happiness, contentment, and love.

"Bang!"
