Chapter 30 Your Highness, You've Missed the Point

Qi, the guard, felt as if he had been struck twice in the chest, and silently watched Gu Yuzhi carry Xueye away.

While Xie Changshi was still registering the goods for storage, he had no choice but to ask Chen Dianyi, "Did you see Xueye's eyes just now? I felt like she was looking down on me."

Snow Night is a wolf, but it doesn't seem to be entirely a wolf. Snow Night's mother can understand their speech, and most importantly, she can create something like a barrier.

He was certain that if he wrote down his extraordinary adventures from that night and sold them as a storybook, it would definitely sell much better than any other ghost stories out there.

As for why I didn't write it...

Qi Chenglang pursed his lips, resolutely refusing to admit that his handwriting looked like a dog's scratch; he simply didn't like writing.

Chief Secretary Xie and Eunuch Ran worked until 7 PM, when the sun had already set, before they finally inventoried and stored everything away.

Even with so many more things, Eunuch Ran's face was still very grim, because there were no medicinal herbs left.

He took two steps back, sat on the steps, and scratched his head vigorously. He looked up at Chief Secretary Xie with bloodshot eyes and said, "Chief Secretary Xie, all the medicinal herbs are gone. Ginseng, cordyceps, lingzhi, ambergris..."

The more Grandpa Ran spoke, the more desperate he became. Even if he killed his entire family, he still couldn't afford to compensate for all those precious Chinese medicinal herbs!

Like I said before, I should have known he would die along with those guards!

Chief Secretary Xie patted Eunuch Ran on the shoulder: "You've worked hard. Go back and rest first. I will explain the situation to His Highness. His Highness will also report the loss of the three boxes of medicinal herbs to the Emperor truthfully."

He was still holding several letters in his hand, which were from Consort Taixian and several other ladies-in-waiting to His Highness. They were placed in a hidden compartment of the jewelry box.

Fortunately, they found everything. His Highness has been eagerly awaiting Consort Tai Xian's reply.

As soon as Xie Changshi turned around, he saw Gu Yuzhi holding Xueye and tilting his head to look at him: "Your Highness."

Gu Yuzhi jumped off the stage, blinking his eyes: "Chief Secretary Xie, what are you holding in your hand? Is it a letter from my mother?"

He had asked Eunuch Ran about it before, and Eunuch Ran said that the letter was among the gifts given to the travelers. He thought he had lost it and would never see it again.

More than his elder brother's reward, Gu Yuzhi wanted to see his mother's reply, but Xie Changshi was very busy at noon, so he restrained himself from asking.

"Yes." Chief Secretary Xie handed over the letter with both hands. "In addition to the reply from Consort Tai Xian, there are also letters from the Empress and Consort De, among others."

"Huh?" Gu Yuzhi was a little surprised and pouted. Could it be that his sisters-in-law had written to say that he was greedy and asked them for things?

Gu Yuzhi took the letter back to the main room, carefully placed the envelopes one by one, and read it word by word. When he came across the character "太" (Tai), he immediately took out the letter and handed it to Chief Secretary Xie: "Chief Secretary Xie, is this a letter from my mother?"

Chief Secretary Xie took it and looked at it, a smile on his face: "Your Highness is truly clever."

Gu Yuzhi covered his mouth and chuckled secretly. Then he climbed onto the stool and said with a hint of smugness, "This letter is the thickest one here. My mother must have a lot to say to me."

Of course, he confirmed it only after reading the words on the envelope.

These letters all have the same suffix, which should be "妃" (fei, meaning concubine). This letter has three characters, the first of which is "太" (tai, meaning too), so this letter must be from the mother concubine.

Seeing the anticipation in Gu Yuzhi's eyes, Xie Changshi opened the letter: "Yuzhi, my son, your mother received your letter and learned that you are safe in the northern desert. Your mother is relieved."

Before he could read much of the letter, Gu Yuzhi's smile gradually faded, and he remained silent for a long while, pursing his lips.

"The Empress Dowager greatly favored my mother. During the Mid-Autumn Festival, she led the ladies of the palace to pay their respects and gave my mother many rewards. Just then, the Empress and the ladies of the palace were about to send their Mid-Autumn Festival gifts, and my mother asked the Empress to send these gifts to you as well..."

Gu Yuzhi could tell that his mother was not telling him the truth, but even if she had, what difference would it make? As a prince, he could never return to the capital without his elder brother's permission.

However, the fact that the imperial sisters-in-law were willing to visit their mother together during the Mid-Autumn Festival indicates that her life in the palace was not too difficult.

But apart from these, Consort Taixian rarely mentioned herself in her subsequent letters. She mostly asked Gu Yuzhi if he was used to the climate in the northern desert, whether it was snowing in the northern desert, and whether he had prepared winter clothes in advance.

Ask if Granny Xu's condition has improved, and if she is getting used to the food...

At the end of the letter, Consort Taixian added, "With your mother not by your side, take care of yourself. If you decide to take any wrong steps, be sure to discuss them with Chief Secretary Xie and the others. Do not act rashly. I look forward to your reply."

Gu Yuzhi took the letter and gently rubbed the words on it. Tears welled up in his eyes. He really missed his mother.

The next second, Gu Yuzhi hurriedly placed the letter on the table, wiped his face hard with the back of his hand twice, afraid that the tears would fall and blur the words on the letter: "I want to keep Mother's letter separately."

He sniffed and said in a childish voice, "Thank you, Chief Secretary. It's too late today. Let's reply to Mother tomorrow and have Eunuch Ran take it back with us."

He had a lot to say to his mother, but he didn't know many words, otherwise he would have written them himself.

"Your Majesty, I understand." Chief Secretary Xie glanced at the remaining letters out of the corner of his eye: "Would Your Highness like to read the letters from the empresses now?"

Unlike his previous expectations, Gu Yuzhi twirled his index finger, looking rather conflicted, and asked, "Does Chief Secretary Xie think we should look at it?" He tilted his head up, trying his best to appear as if he wasn't guilty, "I only wrote a letter to my sister-in-law, the Empress. I didn't write to the other sisters-in-law. If they write to me, are they going to scold me?"

Xie Changshi wanted to say that the ladies were not so free.

But seeing the prince's anxious expression, he swallowed back his slightly sarcastic remark: "Your Highness will know once you open it and take a look."

Gu Yuzhi nodded, agreeing.

He raised his head, feigning composure, and said, "Then I'll trouble Chief Secretary Xie to read it aloud."

Gu Yuzhi puffed out his cheeks, thinking that if his sisters-in-law really wrote letters to scold him, he would stop letting Eunuch Ran bring them local specialties.

To everyone's surprise, after several letters, these ladies all expressed the same sentiment: "I sent you, my brother, something. If you're going to appreciate it, you can't just appreciate the Empress's kindness." They also told Gu Yuzhi to remember to write to them during festivals as well, so as not to show favoritism.

Gu Yuzhi cupped his face in his hands, his apprehension gradually replaced by joy. His sisters-in-law were so kind, giving him gifts and even writing him letters. Gu Yuzhi was delighted: "Thank you, Chief Secretary. What do you mean by favoritism?"

Xie Changshi said with a wry smile, "What this means is that Your Highness cannot reply to just the Empress; each of the concubines in the palace must receive a letter."

Gu Yuzhi nodded as if he suddenly understood, then glanced at Xie Changshi's strange expression, clenched his fist and said solemnly, "Don't worry, Xie Changshi, I will definitely study hard and try to write letters to my sisters-in-law myself during the New Year!"

Chief Secretary Xie...

Your Highness, you've missed the point!
