Chapter 30: Rat carcass found in the stew

Yi Yami got up, washed up, and went straight to the main room to have breakfast.

The five kids and Yi Xiaomai were drinking porridge and eating pickles obediently, and there was a fried egg in each of their bowls.

"Mom, did you get up this morning to fry eggs?" Yi Yami asked He Huaizhu while looking at the golden fried eggs in her bowl.

"Well, life is getting better and better now. There's no reason to keep living a stingy life. I bought a few old hens from Lan Shui's mother in the village, so that I can have eggs to cook for you every day. They're very fresh!" He Huaizhu said with a smile.

Yi Yami finished her fried eggs and drank some white porridge with pickles, feeling happy.

"The five of you will follow us to the town to sell braised food later!" Yi Yami turned and said to the five children who were drinking porridge.

"Okay!" The five kids nodded in unison.

"Okay, you guys should eat quickly. I'll go to the kitchen to clean up and then get ready to leave." Yiyami finished the porridge in one breath, urged them, and went to the kitchen.

As usual, Yi Yami came to the water tank and wanted to drip a drop of water from the fountain of youth into it. She used to do this every day when she got up. Her family's physical fitness has gradually improved a lot. Xiaomai's hair is no longer dry and frizzy, but now it is dark, shiny and smooth, and she is much taller than before; Old Lady Yi used to need a crutch, but now it is different. She doesn't need a crutch to take a walk in the village every day; Yi Laoer can be heard coughing a few times every day. Since he drank the water in the tank, he no longer coughs and gets up less frequently at night; not to mention He Huaizhu. When Yi Yami first met her, her cheeks were fleshless and she looked miserable, but now her face is full and rosy.

Yiyami was still feeling proud that this was all her credit, when her eyes suddenly caught sight of a chicken claw bone next to the water tank.

Confused, she called out, "Grandma, Mom, Dad, Little Brother, Five Kids, come here quickly, I have something to ask you!"

The Yi family members heard the noise and soon surrounded the kitchen.

"What's wrong? What happened?" Yi Laoer asked in confusion.

"It's nothing. I just want to ask you, who of you stole food last night? Stealing food would be fine, but why did you spit out the chicken bones everywhere, even next to the water tank and under the cupboard." Yiyami looked at them.

Wuwa looked confused, Yi Xiaomai also waved his hands, and Old Lady Yi and the Yi Laoer couple all said that they did not eat anything secretly.

Yi Yami saw their reactions and understood. It certainly wasn't her family who did it, and her family wouldn't do that. If her family wanted to eat, they could just take it. They'd already agreed not to spit out bones or anything like that. The Yi family was very frugal, and they made the most of everything. Even leftovers were fed to the chickens and ducks, and the bones were composted.

"There might be a thief in the house..." Yi Yami concluded.

As soon as these words were spoken, everyone in the Yi family was terrified. The next second, Mrs. Yi and the second son and his wife ran to their rooms, checked their cash boxes, and found that the money was not missing. Only then did they feel relieved.

They returned to the kitchen, where Yi Yami was waiting for them. "Did you lose the money?"

"No, the money is fine." Mrs. Yi and Mr. Yi and his wife took a breath and said.

Seeing them like this, Yi Yami reminded them, "Grandma, Dad, Mom, if you have large sums of money, you can go to the Bandai Bank to deposit it. You can keep some small amounts of silver on you. When you get the savings book and key, keep them separately. This way it will be safer."

"Okay, we got it. We'll do it next time we go to town," replied Old Mrs. Yi.

Old Lady Yi said solemnly, "Since no money was lost, the thief couldn't have just come in to eat some braised food and left, right?"

Yi Yami and Old Lady Yi were thinking the same thing. Suddenly, as if she had realized something, she slapped her head and said, "Oh no! My braised food!"

The Yi family members were as if facing a great enemy, and they quickly removed the lids of the braised food.

The braised food was neatly arranged in layers, and it looked like there was nothing wrong with it.

"Xiaomi, it's okay, isn't it fine?" Yi Laoer breathed a sigh of relief.

Yi Yami squatted down and tilted his head, reached his hand into the vat, and took a look at the height of the stewed food in the vat, "No, this stewed food is not right."

"What's wrong?" He Huaizhu asked.

"I always stuff it full, leaving just enough space for two fingers on the lid. Now look, when you put your hand in, there's a lot less at the joint." Yi Yami demonstrated to the Yi family.

"That's true. This little thief is so hateful. Not only does he steal food, but he also steals and takes things!" He Huaizhu said angrily.

"I'm afraid it's not that easy." Yi Yami's face was solemn. She tried to peel off a few layers of braised food, and the next second, the body of a dead rat lay quietly among the braised food. "Oh my God!" Yi Yami was shocked.

Yi Yami picked up the dead mouse with chopsticks, and carefully turned over the braised food underneath, and found another small mouse corpse.

"Open the other tanks and see if there is anything?" Yiyami ordered.

The Yi family opened the other jars with heavy faces and searched like Yi Yami did. Sure enough, they found a lot of dead rats.

The Yi family and Wu Wa found all the dead rats together.

Thirty dead rats, some large and some small, of varying sizes, were lined up in a row. Their commonality was red, swollen skin, and some even had ulcers.

When the Yi family looked at these black-haired mice, or some hairless baby mice, they felt nauseous and creepy.

Everyone in the Yi family was very angry. Yi Yami stared at the five jars of braised food and the thirty dead rats on the ground, the anger in her eyes reaching its peak.
