Chapter 38 Nian Nian and Yuan Yuan
"Okay, daddy will hold you." Shi Guilin held Nian Nian's lotus-shaped arms and carried his soft fleshy buttocks down the stairs.
As soon as his footsteps reached the last step, a deafening bark erupted. Shi Guilin unhurriedly placed Nian Nian back on the ground. Yuan Yuan, who had heard the dog before the dog, came running over, tail wagging. His moist nose nuzzled Nian Nian's belly, making the little cub giggle and then, clutching his belly, twisted away.
Yuanyuan turned to sniff Nian Nian's calves, jumped with force on the soles of his feet, his upper body stood upright excitedly, and his two big ears drooped obediently on both sides of his head.
"It seems that Yuanyuan misses Nian Nian too." Shi Guilin stretched out the broad palm of an adult male and effortlessly pressed down Yuanyuan's overly excited furry dog head, making it lower its head.
Nian Nian, the baby who is not shy about expressing her affection, immediately reached out her little hand and held Yuan Yuan's paw: "Nian Nian misses Yuan Yuan too."
"Woof." Yuanyuan's tail left a shadow, and he opened his mouth and stuck out his tongue, as if he was smiling.
Shi Guilin patted Nian Nian's little butt and said, "Go play with Yuan Yuan. Don't run too fast, or you'll fall."
"Yeah. Nian Nian, take your time." The fair-skinned little pudding agreed readily, grabbed Yuan Yuan's dog tail, and followed the little golden retriever.
Shi Guilin found a spot in the living room where he could see the two little ones, and with a relaxed smile on his face, he sat down lazily. He was now back to his idle state, but with Nian Nian babbling within his sight, even if he did nothing, just watching her was a comforting feeling.
I wish days like this could last forever. Work, illegitimate children, verbal abuse, rumors... all stay away from him.
The man, legs crossed, leaned against the sofa, lost in thought for a long moment. When Guilin came to his senses, the slippers dangling from his toes began to dangle idly again. He casually picked up a magazine and flipped through it, selecting each page.
"Yuanyuan, Nian Nian has a friend now."
The little cub sat cross-legged on the wool blanket, rubbing the sandbag in his hands, eager to share this cause for celebration with the little golden retriever: "Youyou, that's great! Nian Nian is so happy."
Nian Nian was overwhelmed with admiration and pride at the thought of her new friend, Brother Duan, so versatile and intelligent. Yuan Yuan didn't understand at all. He squatted beside her, his pure black eyes tracking the sandbag he flipped over and over in her palms, and raised his paw twice.
Nian Nian continued to talk about her joy at having a friend named Jiang Duan: "Nian Nian played with Youyou. Youyou, um, it was great."
Yuanyuan twitched the tips of his ears, as if he couldn't help it. He opened his mouth, took Nian Nian's sandbag and held it in his mouth.
"Ah, Yuanyuan." Nian Nian was dissatisfied, blaming the puppy for not listening carefully, "Nian Nian said Youyou."
Yuanyuan didn't apologize, but instead intensified his anger. He turned around with the sandbag in his mouth, leaving his butt and tail facing Nian Nian, looking like a dog with no interest in him.
"Hmph." Nian Nian got a little angry. She pushed herself up from the blanket with her hands, moved in front of Yuan Yuan, and spread out her palms: "Bag, this is Nian Nian's."
Because of Yuanyuan's attitude, the little guy decided to ask for a sandbag and stopped playing with him.
Yuanyuan blinked slowly, without even relaxing his lips, and turned his head away.
"Hmm?" Nian Nian leaned back slightly, feeling provoked. Nian Nian was truly angry now. The little brat, Nian Nian, pouting, grabbed Yuan Yuan's mouthpiece with both hands, one above and one below, trying to pry it open.
"Bad Yuanyuan. Baobao, Nian Nian."
"Awooo." Yuanyuan, who had no idea what Nian Nian was mumbling the entire time, was completely bewildered. Why had he pried open his mouth when nothing had happened? Adhering to the principle that a good dog doesn't bully a child, Yuanyuan obediently let go. The saliva-soaked sandbag fell to the ground.
"Hmph." Nian Nian, unbothered by the saliva, quickly snatched the sandbag into her arms. But not being bothered was one thing, and complaining about it was another. He was already quite experienced with Yuan Yuan's saliva, so without even a sniff, Nian Nian raised her chin and accused, "My bag is sour, you bad Yuan Yuan."
Everything that was stained by Yuanyuan's saliva would taste sour. Nian Nian understood this well.
Yuanyuan raised his paw and rubbed his face.
As the cub and the dog argued, the door to the entrance rang. It was Shi Lihan and Chen Yi, leaving work. Office workers' routines were too routine and monotonous, so when the door opened around 6:30 pm, it was definitely them returning home.
Nian Nian, with his sharp ears, quickly reacted. He abandoned the sandbag and Yuan Yuan and strode towards the entrance on his short legs. He had been doing the ritual of welcoming Shi Lihan and Chen Yi home from work for half a month and had become quite proficient.
It's just that his steps were too small, and he would usually only walk halfway to greet her when Shi Lihan and Chen Yi would stride in and wait for Nian Nian's greeting.
This time, too, the two groups stood face to face, and Nian Nian started the "announcement." The words for the announcement were still taught to him by Shi Guilin.
"Uncle, aunt, you've worked so hard. Come home and let Nian Nian hold you."
The little guy was so tiny, with short arms, and even smaller when his arms were outstretched. But Shi Lihan and Chen Yi loved him so much that they walked forward with smiles on their faces, took turns hugging Nian Nian, and gave her a baby kiss that smelled of milk.
"Is Nian Nian your aunt's sweet and caring little cotton-padded jacket?" Chen Yi squeezed his little chubby face.
"Well, Nian Nian." Nian Nian, whose mouth was squeezed into a goldfish shape, spoke unclearly.
Chen Yi laughed, withdrew his hand, and kissed Nian Nian on the forehead.
Nian Nian couldn't stand Xiang Xiang's sister aunt the most. She would always blush for a while after being kissed, and this time was no exception. She shyly twisted her body and said softly, "Auntie, take a rest. Nian Nian, get a cup."
After he finished speaking, he started running with his short legs. After running a few steps, he remembered that he had not let Shi Lihan rest yet, so he turned back and pushed Shi Lihan's calf with his little hand: "Uncle, take a rest. Here, give it to Nian Nian."
Shi Lihan failed to hold on to any of them, and the briefcase he was holding slipped out of his hands and was taken away by the diligent Nian Nian.
Fortunately, the briefcase only contained two thin folders, so it was not very heavy and the little guy could hold it effortlessly.
"Huh, huh..." Nian Nian wrapped her arms around the black leather briefcase, ran to the sofa and put it down.
He let out a dramatic sigh, wiped the non-existent sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand, and then patted the sofa: "Uncle, Auntie, here."
Shi Lihan and Chen Yi sat down as instructed.
The maid beside her was very considerate. She straightened the upside-down small teacup on the plate on the coffee table and filled it with tea.
Little Nian Nian turned around, about to pour tea like an adult, when he saw a cup ready at hand. He was a little confused, but not too much, and didn't dwell on it, just offering a helping of tea.
"Uncle, drink. Auntie, drink. You're not thirsty anymore. Rest now."
He moved his hand, and the small teacup moved on the coffee table, and his peach-like face turned towards Shi Lihan and Chen Yi.
Shi Guilin closed the magazine early and watched Nian Nian busying around, like a young boy wearing a small square hat in a costume drama, full of energy and spirit.
Chen Yi couldn't suppress the corners of her mouth. She picked up the teacup and took a sip of tea, exclaiming exaggeratedly: "Wow, it's so comfortable. Auntie doesn't feel tired at all now. All thanks to our Nian Nian."
Shi Lihan, unwilling to be left behind, took a big sip of tea. Before he even swallowed it, he uttered a long "hmm" and said, "Uncle, your throat feels moist after drinking the tea. You've had a good rest. You can handle working another ten days."
Nian Nian smiled, her white teeth faintly visible. He put his hands on his hips and straightened his body even more: "Nian Nian, great, amazing!"
Shi Guilin smiled heartily, holding up the magazine with both hands to cover the lower half of his face, revealing a pair of curved eyes.
