For several days in a row, the Mongol primary consorts and Consort Tong paid their respects to her, carefully attending to her and dealing with her with caution.
After seeing off the primary wives, Consort Tong leaned wearily against the armchair, her mood instantly relaxing. Qingyan sat upright beside her.
"Mother, please rest for a while!" Qingyan brought a cup of hot tea to help Consort Tong relax.
For several days in a row, they had been dealing with the primary consort, having to think several times before saying a single word. Qingyan felt exhausted. What's more, Consort Tong had to constantly deal with the interference from the other consorts, which was also very annoying.
"Little Darling knows how to care for people!" Consort Tong smiled. Even Emperor Kangxi could not understand such hardships. The court and the inner court had their own ways of fighting.
"Mother, the master is very worried about you." Qingyan smiled as he looked at Consort Tong. No matter how high a woman's position or how much she was favored, in their eyes, what they valued most was their son.
"You two be careful too, the Mongolian wives will be targeting you!" Consort Tong was also worried. They had brought the twins with them, and the Mongolians were watching them closely. If they were not careful, the children would become their targets.
Qingyan has become listless; lately, no one has dared to leave their tents unattended.
Originally, the children also had tents, but after Kangxi punished the Mongols, Qingyan dared not let the children live alone anymore and continued to live with them in a tent.
After all that commotion last night, Qingyan was a little embarrassed, and the little one even started making noises in response.
With her rosy cheeks, Consort Tong knew that the two little ones must have caused trouble for Yin.
"Your Majesty, the wife of the Prince of Khorchin has come to pay her respects," Shu said quietly as she walked in from outside.
Ugh!
Qingyan was taken aback. Not long after she entered, the Mongol primary consort had already made a move. There must be something wrong here.
She had just sat down when the Khorchin Princess Consort entered. After bowing to Consort Tong and Qingyan, her face was full of smiles.
Consort Tong and her daughter-in-law exchanged a glance. Just a few days ago, Emperor Kangxi had punished the leaders of the Khorchin, so the fact that he could still smile at them today meant that he must have something to ask for.
"Your Majesty, this servant wishes to pay respects to the Empress Dowager!" The primary consort wanted to use the Empress Dowager to put pressure on Emperor Kangxi, as the Khorchin's control over the palace had been decreasing since the Grand Empress Dowager left.
Two days ago, she went to see Consort Xin in person, but she couldn't get any information from her.
Consort Xin was utterly useless within the palace walls, so she had to return to curry favor with Consort Tong in hopes of meeting the Empress Dowager.
"Hmm, the Princess Consort just came over a couple of days ago. Is there something you need today?" Consort Tong gave Qingyan a wink, signaling her to help out.
The princess smiled and began to chat with Consort Tong.
"Your Majesty, this servant wishes to pay respects to the Empress Dowager!" The Princess Consort wishes to meet with the Empress Dowager, and many arrangements must be made based on the situation within the palace.
Since then, the imperial concubines have been betrothed one by one. The imperial concubines under the Mongol banner have all been betrothed to members of the imperial family. Some of the marginalized women have become primary consorts, while even those from the royal family have only become secondary consorts.
The princes had virtually no chance of becoming the primary consort of the Khorchin. Without the Empress Dowager, their legitimate sons even struggled to obtain princesses from the royal family and the imperial clan.
"Let's go, Xiao Guai will come along to pay her respects too!" The Empress Dowager liked having Xiao Guai by her side.
The three of them went to the imperial tent together, and then to the Empress Dowager's tent next door. When Su Mo'er heard that the Fujin was coming, she couldn't help but look at the Empress Dowager with concern.
Since arriving on the grasslands, the Empress Dowager has not been able to find anyone except for a few of her old wives, especially the wives of the Khorchin, who all hoped to get news from the Empress Dowager.
"Su Mo'er, have someone prepare the gifts for the Khorchin!" The Empress Dowager hadn't returned to her maternal home for decades. Since her return, she had only gone out for strolls with Su Mo'er, and sometimes Xiao Guai would bring the two children along. "Also, prepare lunch; they'll dine together today!"
The Empress Dowager did not wish to meet with the Khorchin people alone. However, she would not have minded if Consort Tong and Xiao Guai were present.
It was no secret that the Fujin (Fujin) went to see Consort Xin first.
"I'll go and do it right away!" Su Mo'er hurried to the inner tent to prepare the things.
Soon, Consort Tong entered with Qingyan and the Fujin. After paying their respects to the Empress Dowager, they began to inquire about her health.
Qingyan sat to the side, carefully observing the Fujin. Sure enough, this person had something to ask of her. Her gaze made Qingyan feel very uncomfortable.
"My dear, how are the two children?" The Empress Dowager was still concerned about the condition of the twins.
"Grandma, she's doing well," Qingyan quickly said.
"Your Majesty and Fourth Prince's wife are filial, Your Majesty is truly blessed!" the princess quickly said.
The Empress Dowager had been in the palace for many years but had not given birth to a prince for the Khorchin. The Borjigit clan had long since given up on her. If Consort Xin hadn't been so useless, they wouldn't have bothered the Empress Dowager again.
Qingyan couldn't help but smile. The Mongolian women were known for their straightforwardness and directness, so these words of flattery towards the Empress Dowager seemed rather strange.
"The Emperor is the most filial to his mother!" Consort Tong retorted directly.
The words spoken by the Princess Consort were ambiguous, and if they were to spread, they might be used against her by the other concubines.
"Yes, yes, yes," the princess quickly replied, "His Majesty is the most filial son, the people know that!"
"Grandma, your nanny and I will make you some snacks." Qingyan had no intention of getting involved in Mongolian affairs. As the concubine in charge of palace affairs, it was only natural for Consort Tong to know about the situation.
"Go!" The Empress Dowager could tell that Qingyan didn't like staying here, so she quickly sent Xiaoguai away.
Stepping out of the tent, Qingyan let out a long sigh of relief.
