Chapter Forty-Four: Self-Reliance

As dawn broke, the courtyard began to bustle with activity. Carts carrying supplies were arriving one after another, delivering things to the masters' small kitchen. The innkeeper of Yuelai Inn knew that Qingyan had arrived at the harbor today, so he specially sent over the prepared daily necessities as well.

"Fourth Brother, let's go out first. I'll see what the kitchen staff got!" Qingyan put on her outdoor clothes and went straight into the kitchen, which was filled with things. Only a third of the food was green vegetables; the rest was seafood.

Qingyan frowned slightly. Could it really be this kind of condition?

“My lord, this is good. The manager of Yuelai Inn knows your taste and has specially added some vegetables.” Su Lan said from the side, “In the past few days, it was mostly seafood. Apart from His Majesty’s imperial kitchen having vegetables, the rest of us probably didn’t even see a single piece of bok choy.”

Qingyan was taken aback. Was she trying to get special treatment?

"What about my sister-in-law? Songkelierha is here too. The adults don't need these things, but the children must eat!" Qingyan became worried. The environment in the military port was extremely poor, and it had to be said that such a problem could cause a lot of trouble.

"The shopkeeper has already sent it over, but I don't think this is a good solution!" Su Lan looked around and saw that the guards were eating very simply. Seafood was fine to eat occasionally, but eating it every day might make them feel nauseous.

Qingyan shook her head at Sulan. These were not things they could control. Unless Kangxi personally sent Li Dequan to find her, she would not say anything more.

The Crown Prince kept a close eye on Yin, and any further action from her might make things difficult for Yin.

"Little Darling, we're going to the main courtyard right away. Su Lan, go and help the twins get up!" Li Dequan had just arrived when he delivered Emperor Kangxi's imperial edict, saying that he wanted to summon the two of them.

Qingyan straightened his clothes and followed Yin out of the courtyard where they lived. A few hundred meters away was the courtyard where Kangxi lived.

Upon entering the courtyard for the first time, Qingyan admitted that the military port was very simple, and that the place where Kangxi lived was not even as good as the courtyard he bought outside.

The courtyard only had two more side rooms than the one they lived in; the rest of the layout was inconvenient, and there were no coconut trees in the courtyard.

After the two bowed, Qingyan stood obediently behind Yin, waiting for Kangxi's questions.

"Fourth Prince, you are in charge of the Ministry of Revenue. Do you have any thoughts on this situation?" Kangxi handed over the Ministry of Revenue to Yinzhen. The construction of the naval port, which did not use the national treasury's silver, and the navy's military pay, etc., all had to be reported to the Ministry of Revenue.

Yin pondered for a moment and said, "Father, the living conditions here are very simple, but these can be overcome. However, there are not many vegetables."

Kangxi nodded and explained the situation over the past few days. The Yuelai Inn had come directly to deliver supplies, which could be effective in the short term, but in the long run, the Yuelai Inn probably wouldn't be able to sustain itself.

"That won't work either. Yuelai Inn still needs to operate. We can't send all our vegetables here. Father, let people cultivate the land nearby. Growing vegetables and raising pigs are all acceptable." Yin felt that being self-sufficient was the best solution.

Among the navy recruits this time, some are illegitimate sons of aristocratic families, but the vast majority are children from poor, ordinary families. There are definitely some children from farming families among them, so there is absolutely no problem with either of them.

"Find soldiers who have done these jobs as role models, and after training, let the soldiers become self-reliant!" Yin said, raising his head.
