Chapter Forty: Reflections on a War

After the war, a sense of sorrow rose in Yin's heart. He and Qingyan hid in the carriage, while Fei Yanggu and others desperately came to their rescue. However, Kangxi could not move and could only watch quietly as his son was in trouble.

The anxiety in his eyes moved Yin deeply; he too had once done the same. He had given up Honghui for the throne. Looking down at the sleeping little girl, he couldn't help but lean down and kiss her forehead.

"Little Darling, let's get ready to go out." The sounds of swords and spears could no longer be heard outside. Su Peisheng had the carriage cleaned, and Kangxi specially ordered Li Dequan to bring over the white fox fur carpet from the imperial carriage.

"Fourth Prince, it's safe now." Li Dequan quietly laid the carpet back in its original place and called out softly to the Fourth Prince, hoping that he would be safe and sound.

Yin quietly crawled out, and Li Dequan saw Qingyan pulling Yin with one hand and rubbing her eyes with the other as she was dragged out from under the bed.

"Don't rub it, it's dirty." Yin shook his head helplessly. He had just said not to worry about it too much. Her sleepy appearance showed that she hadn't been woken up by the noise outside.

Seeing that the two were safe and sound, Li Dequan finally felt relieved. Qingyan looked at the surrounding furnishings, which were mostly marked with swords and knives, and felt even worse.

"Princess Qingyan, these pieces of furniture are not suitable for this post. His Majesty will have the workshop make you a new set once we return." This was the umpteenth time they had been attacked on the march, and now someone had even breached their carriage.

"Anda, is His Majesty alright?" Qingyan asked with feigned concern. These pieces of furniture were meticulously prepared by Fei Yanggu, yet they had been ruined like this. It would be better for Fei Yanggu to worry about them.

Li Dequan was very pleased. Princess Qingyan was young and sensible. After such a thing happened, the first person he asked was His Majesty. Yin was secretly glad that the little girl had heard the method he had given Qingyan, so his plan had not been in vain.

"His Majesty is safe. You and Fourth Prince must be careful and make sure nothing else happens." Li Dequan liked Yin and Qingyan. Unlike the other princes, these two children did not consider Li Dequan a servant. Even if they were in a bad mood, they would allow him to speak harshly to them.

Once Li Dequan regained his self-respect, he would make things convenient for Yin and the other two.

"Thank you for your guidance, An Da." Qing Yan gave a slight bow, and Li Dequan quickly stepped aside.

Looking at the white fox fur carpet beneath his feet, Yin felt even more moved, thinking that his father, the Emperor, had not given up on him after all.

After Li Dequan left, the carriage returned to calm. Qingyan looked down at the carpet and couldn't help but sigh. Things were no longer the same as before; Kangxi had made amends, and she had to accept it happily.

"Qingyan, this is the royal family." Yin held Qingyan's small hand tightly, knowing full well that Qingyan felt a chill in her heart.

Qingyan tilted her head and sat on the white fox fur rug, which was obviously bigger than her own, and the quality of the fur was much better.

"Fourth Prince, do you think we'll be sacrificed?" Qingyan couldn't imagine whether Kangxi would sacrifice them directly, since she and Yin had been caught in the vortex.

Yin was stunned; he had never thought about this question before.

"War is always the cruelest thing." Qingyan's childlike voice made Yin somewhat worried. This disturbance had changed Qingyan's mood a lot.

"No, I won't!" Yin kissed her little face. "You just need to stay by my side without worry."

Yin did not make promises lightly, and today, seeing Qingyan's fearful and terrified expression, he was deeply moved.

Even after setting up camp, Qingyan clung tightly to Yin's sleeve, refusing to let him leave. Li Dequan received the message and instructed Yin to take Qingyan to Feiyanggu's tent before he finally carried the little girl away from the carriage.

"Qingyan..." Fei Yanggu looked at Qingyan coming over, picked him up in one go, and wondered if the little guy had been frightened by that assassination attempt.

"Father!" Qingyan burst into tears. She had never imagined that one day she would face such a scene.

Fei Yanggu held Qingyan in his arms and patted her back. After all, the Fourth Prince was still young, and even if Qingyan was afraid, he could not give her any sense of security.

Qingyan held Fei Yanggu's neck tightly, and Yin Xiao's face instantly fell. Just now, Qingyan hadn't vented like this; he was worried about whether something might go wrong.

Kangxi had instructed Yin to send the banquet to Fei Yanggu because he was considering waiting until Yin reached a certain age. Now that the matter was resolved, he could finally have complete peace.

"Father..." Qingyan's voice was hoarse from crying. Yin stood there blankly. He had never experienced such fatherly love before. In his memory, Kangxi was always high and mighty. Even if he gave him a smile, he would remember it for a long time.

"It's alright, don't worry." Fei Yanggu hugged Qingyan tightly, tears streaming down her face.

Qingyan has never liked to cry since she was a child. No matter how badly Jue Luo Shi did things, Qingyan never cried like this.

“Our Qingyan was very brave; they didn’t make a sound when someone broke in.” Fei Yanggu didn’t want to recall that scene; it was truly hard to accept.

As the man in black entered the carriage, Fei Yanggu felt his beliefs crumble. If Qing Yan were caught, he would surely lay down his sword; nothing was more important than his daughter's life.

"Fourth Uncle, it's my fault for not taking good care of Qingyan." Yin had no choice but to lower his head. Previously, Kangxi had entrusted Qingyan's safety to Yin, but...

"Fourth Prince, you did very well." Qingyan sobbed and hid in Fei Yanggu's arms. Seeing this scene, Yin felt a surge of anger, but he couldn't bring himself to vent his anger in front of Fei Yanggu.

He glanced at Fei Yanggu's robust physique, then looked down at his own small frame. The comparison made it clear who was better.

Yin pinched the purse on his belt in frustration. He had to be stronger than he was in his previous life. Otherwise, Qingyan would definitely lack a sense of security. No wonder she clung to power so tightly in her previous life; it was all his fault.

At this moment, Si Si had already prepared various excuses for Qing Yan. He used to dislike Qing Yan for valuing power too much, but now he was deeply reflecting on his own actions.

"Qingyan, have some water first." Fei Yanggu pointed to the teacup, and Yin, the lackey, poured Qingyan a cup of warm tea.

Qingyan noticed that her throat was a little dry, but after drinking some warm water, it finally felt better.

"Father, can I stay with you?" Qingyan was a little frightened today and didn't want to sleep alone tonight.

"Okay!" Fei Yanggu specially asked Kangxi for leave and skipped the evening meeting to accompany Qingyan through her emotional ordeal. Today, she might not be able to sleep.

Yin could only leave dejectedly and head to the imperial tent. As he walked, he pondered how to make himself stronger.
