As the first rays of morning sunlight fall on the treetops, the shadows of the leaves on the ground sway in the gentle breeze.
Duofu, nestled in his warm bed, was still having a sweet dream. His mouth was making a series of uneasy noises, as if he was dreaming of tearing apart something. His appearance was so endearing that one wanted to hold him in their arms and pamper him.
The maids who were serving the Fourth Prince to wash up did not make a sound at his signal. The washing up process was unusually quiet, except that Duofu on the bed could be heard snoring softly.
Upon hearing this voice, the Fourth Prince's eyes darkened, and a smile inadvertently crept onto his lips.
The maids who served the Fourth Prince closely all knew that the Fourth Prince behaved completely differently when he was with the Empress and when he was alone.
Some servants had reported this to Consort Tong, but Consort Tong did not believe them at all. She only thought that it was trying to destroy their mother-son relationship. They were not biological mother and son to begin with. And the servant who reported this is now nowhere to be found. He has been dealt with without anyone knowing.
So the Fourth Prince had two faces. In front of Consort Tong and the Emperor, he appeared innocent and naive, like an ordinary six-year-old child. But in private, he was a completely different person. However, his serious demeanor made him look like a little old man. Perhaps all children in the palace were like this, maturing very early.
When Duofu woke up from his bed, the Fourth Prince had already finished breakfast with Consort Tong and was returning to his room to practice calligraphy.
Then they saw Duofu with his fox-like eyes half-open, swaying as he stood up, looking like he was about to get up and look for food.
As soon as Duofu saw the Fourth Prince enter the room, he immediately called out enthusiastically, looking like he wanted a hug.
The Fourth Prince, with his short legs, walked to the bed, picked up Little Duofu, gently rubbed his ear, and whispered something.
"Duoduo, are you awake? Are you hungry? If you are, call out twice."
Upon hearing this, Duofu's physiological functions overcame his mental control, and he immediately barked twice.
I'm hungry.
Then he opened his two big eyes and stared at the little meat bun, indicating that it was time to feed him.
The Fourth Prince's eyes were full of light. Everything that happened last night felt like a dream to him, so when he asked just now, he unconsciously probed again. When he heard Duofu, he called out twice, and he couldn't hide the joy on his face.
So he immediately ordered people to prepare food for Duofu, especially extra small meatballs.
Then the Fourth Prince carried Duofu to the side to wash up. He took a small towel, wiped Duofu's face and ears, and had Duofu rinse his mouth. Then he sat down at the table to wait for the meal to be served.
Waiting is always long.
Duofu rubbed its two paws against its rumbling belly, and its two ears on its head drooped down, as if it were hungry and had no strength.
Duofu was filled with regret. He should have known better than to sleep in. If he had slept in, he would have had to skip a meal today, which was not worth it.
Duofu rolled around in the Fourth Prince's arms, crying out in hunger.
The Fourth Prince looked at Duofu's pitiful appearance and spoke with a hint of impatience to his personal eunuch, Su Peisheng.
"Why haven't we arrived yet?"
Upon hearing the Fourth Prince's words, Su Peisheng immediately responded.
"Your servant, I'll go take a look right away."
Before Su Peisheng could even step out of the room, he saw the little eunuch Wang Ji carrying Duofu food into the room.
Su Peisheng inwardly cursed, "Why didn't you come sooner? Now I'm the one who's been blamed by the Fourth Prince."
Su Peisheng didn't have time to get angry at the little eunuch Wang Ji, so he quickly took the food from his hands and placed it on the table one by one.
Su Peisheng smiled broadly, his eyes fixed on the baby, Duofu, who was being called in the Fourth Prince's arms.
"Master, everything is set out. Shall we have the eunuch Wang Ji serve young master Duo Duo?"
The Fourth Prince was delighted to hear Su Peisheng address Duoduo, but waved his hand in refusal.
The Fourth Prince simply placed Duofu on the table and told him to eat by himself.
As soon as Duofu's four paws touched the table, he hurriedly ran to the basin containing goat milk, lowered his head, and began to gulp it down.
"People are starving! People are starving!"
After drinking several large gulps of goat milk, Duofu finally felt less hungry. He then slowly finished the food on the table, eating a small meatball and a sip of goat milk at a leisurely pace.
Finally, after finishing the meatballs and goat milk, it slowly ate the snacks from another small plate, wagging its little tail leisurely.
The Fourth Prince, standing to the side, looked at Duofu's contented little face and teased him mischievously.
"Eating so much in one meal, no wonder you've gotten so fat."
Upon hearing this, Duofu's two fox eyes filled with anger, and he barked angrily.
"You're the one who's gotten so fat you're like a ball, you little meat bun. I didn't eat that much at all; I ate three tiny little dishes."
Duofu turned around, presenting his backside to the Fourth Prince to express his dissatisfaction, while making noises incessantly.
"How can you be so stingy as my human? I've only eaten so much of your food, and you're already complaining that I've eaten too much."
The Fourth Prince's eyes were full of smiles when he saw Duofu's little tricks. Ignoring the angry Duofu, he picked him up and carried him to his small study. He needed to practice calligraphy, otherwise he wouldn't be able to complete his task for the day.
When they entered the small study and placed Duofu on a blanket, the Fourth Prince's voice carried a soothing tone.
"Duoduo, you can play here. I need to practice calligraphy. Be quiet, or I'll cut my dinner in half."
