Judging from Princess Yong'an's indifferent demeanor, there shouldn't be anything between the two of them. For the dignified Regent to have a woman he can't have, Liang Xuanjing felt that he had a new source of amusement recently.
However, he didn't really like Li Chang'an. He just felt that she was different from others because she was a princess and held military power. In addition, he was amazed by her appearance today, so he decided to do it on a whim.
Princess Yong'an probably had no interest in him, but that didn't matter. Perhaps having another friend wouldn't be bad, and besides, he really wanted to see the Regent get jealous.
Liang Xuanjing thought about it and couldn't help but smile.
Li Chang'an naturally had no idea what he was thinking. She didn't even notice Feng Beichuan's expression and just wanted to leave this boring place as soon as possible.
The banquet was finally coming to an end. Li Chang'an made up an excuse and hurriedly left the table, followed closely by Feng Beichuan.
"Princess, please wait!"
Li Chang'an walked alone on a secluded passageway in the palace. All around was quiet, but a clear male voice broke the silence.
Here we go again. Li Chang'an turned around and looked at the man with displeasure.
Feng Beichuan stood behind her, the distance between them neither too close nor too far, but Feng Beichuan did not move forward. Instead, he looked at Li Chang'an with a mocking expression.
He stood tall and elegant, his black coat blending almost seamlessly into the night. His handsome yet sharp face appeared somewhat cold and stern in the moonlight.
It was indeed pleasing to the eye, but Li Chang'an didn't look closely. She said somewhat impatiently:
"Is there anything else, Your Highness?"
This was supposed to be a perfectly ordinary question, but Feng Beichuan chuckled softly upon hearing it and casually replied:
"Does Your Highness intend to leave alone like this?"
Li Chang'an found it baffling. She replied, "Otherwise what? That place is so boring, why would I stay any longer? I suppose there are many people who don't want me to stay there."
Upon hearing this, Feng Beichuan looked at her with a hurt expression and said, "Since Your Highness knows that place is boring, why did you just leave like that? Leaving me there alone to watch that bunch of clowns. You might as well go to Jiyun Tower to watch a play."
Judging from Feng Beichuan's words, he was the one who voluntarily returned to the venue when the two of them came out to relax, but now he's blaming Li Chang'an.
Li Chang'an was quite helpless. This person was always like this, so she had no choice but to patiently say, "Yes, yes, it's all my fault, okay? So what does Your Highness want in order to let me go back?"
She had intended to gloss over the matter, but Feng Beichuan, being the kind of person who would pretend to be innocent even after getting a good deal, said in a low voice, "Since that's the case... why doesn't the princess offer herself to him in return? How about that?"
Li Chang'an twitched his lips, barely suppressing the urge to beat him up, and said, "Except for this."
"Alright then." Seeing the strange look on her face, Feng Beichuan knew when to stop and took the initiative to back down, saying, "Then Princess, you mustn't avoid me next time, okay?"
Although Li Chang'an didn't really want to talk to him, he was finally able to get rid of him for the time being, so he nodded and said, "Then I'll take my leave."
Feng Beichuan smiled brightly at her and quickly said before Li Chang'an could speak, "I will also return to my residence first. Princess, please take care and I will not see you off."
Then he really left.
Li Chang'an watched his retreating figure and finally felt relieved. In a good mood, he slowly walked back to the general's mansion.
She had just returned to the manor and entered the courtyard of her bedroom when a maid came to deliver some snacks, saying that they were made by her aunt herself.
The pastry looked exquisite. Li Chang'an hadn't eaten much at the restaurant, so he picked up a pastry and put it to his mouth. Just as he was about to eat it, a hand suddenly knocked the pastry to the ground.
Li Chang'an turned his head in surprise and saw Feng Beichuan with a solemn expression.
"What are you doing?" Li Chang'an asked, full of questions.
Feng Beichuan raised an eyebrow and said, "This is poisonous, so it's best not to eat it. Of course, if you want to die, I won't stop you."
Li Chang'an was speechless and could only say dryly, "You're the one who wants to die. I'm asking you, how do you know this pastry is poisoned?"
Feng Beichuan sat down beside her and casually said, "I guessed."
"It can't be the truth," Li Chang'an naturally wouldn't believe it. She pressed on, "Tell the truth, how did you know? Also, didn't you go back? Why are you at the General's Mansion?"
Feng Beichuan said, "You can find out whether the pastries are poisoned or not by trying them. As for why I'm here... well, it's because I've been following you!"
This was the first time in Li Chang'an's life that he had seen someone who could talk about stalking so openly and honestly. He had truly broadened his horizons.
But now was not the time to dwell on that. Li Chang'an took a silver hairpin from his hair and inserted it into the pastry. When he took it out again, the silver hairpin had turned black.
It really is poisonous.
Strangely enough, Li Chang'an wasn't very surprised by this. She was more curious about how Feng Beichuan had figured out that Dianxin was poisoned. This was something that no ordinary person could do, so she couldn't help but have some doubts.
"You know martial arts?" Li Chang'an asked bluntly.
Just as Feng Beichuan was about to deny it, Li Chang'an struck him with a palm. He couldn't dodge in time, and the palm struck him squarely in the chest.
"You hit me way too hard! Were you trying to kill me?" Feng Beichuan clutched his chest, his face filled with disbelief.
Li Chang'an's palm strike was indeed quite forceful, but she truly hadn't expected Feng Beichuan to fail to dodge it. He would be in pain for at least three days, and feeling somewhat guilty, she said:
"I'm sorry, but do you really have no martial arts skills?"
Feng Beichuan was still clutching his wound when she asked him this, and he said irritably, "What, do you want to slap me again?"
"No need," Li Chang'an quickly denied.
"Then let me ask you, what are you planning to do about the pastries?" Feng Beichuan stopped dwelling on the matter and asked, looking at the plate of pastries.
Li Chang'an pondered for a moment, but still couldn't swallow his anger, so he picked up the plate of pastries and said, "Let's go find her."
As she spoke, she walked out of the courtyard, and Feng Beichuan quickly followed. The two of them went to the aunt's courtyard together.
When the two arrived, the lights in the concubine's courtyard had already been turned off, with only a few maids left to keep watch outside the courtyard and at the entrance to the bedroom.
When the young maids saw Li Chang'an and Feng Beichuan approaching so aggressively, they were startled and hurriedly went inside to find the head maid, Xing'er, before hastily inviting the two men into the east hall.
A moment later, Qin Xiashi, wearing only a thin outer robe and looking exhausted, walked in. Upon seeing Li Chang'an, she said weakly:
"Madam, is there something urgent that you've come to see me in the middle of the night?"
Seeing her hypocritical demeanor, Li Chang'an became angry and said without any politeness, "I had no intention of disturbing your sweet dreams, but if I hadn't come today, next time it might not be the snacks that were poisoned!"
As she spoke, she placed the plate of pastries in front of Madam Qin. Madam Qin's expression immediately changed, but she still stubbornly said, "These pastries were sent to you by someone, Madam. Is there a problem?"
